1 June 2011 Garland Senior Activity Center SILVER SCOOP 12th Annual Health & Safety Fair Thursday, June 16 9:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. June is National Home Safety Month. This is the twelfth year that the Garland Senior Activity Center has planned an event to benefit senior citizens in our community. We will offer health and wellness related screenings as well as information about many assistance services available for older adults in our community. Our goal at the Garland Senior Activity Center is to educate and influence people to prevent accidental injury and death, reduce senior falls and wipe out accidental prescription overdose. Giveaways, door prizes and refreshments make it a fun and beneficial event. Dallas Symphony Orchestra Tchaikovsky s Romeo & Juliet & Lunch Thursday, June 9 10:00 a.m. - $48.00 The Dallas Symphony Orchestra is holding a special casual classics concert just for you! You will enjoy lunch at the symphony hall following the matinee performance of Tchaikovsky s Romeo and Juliet. Hurry, tickets will go fast. Tournaments 2nd & 4th - Thursdays 1st & 3rd Thursdays are practice. 9:30 a.m. - Meeting Room Gift Cards for the top bowlers! Our Wii bowling team recently took second in the regional Wii Bowling tournament held at the Allen Senior Center. Congratulations, team! We are currently searching for new bowlers for our team. The legendary, west coast burger chain, In-N-Out, has now made its way east to Frisco, Texas. We will see what all the hype is about, and then hop across the road to Stonebriar for some (optional) Cheesecake Factory for dessert and some time to shop! Best Little Courthouses in Texas Friday, June 24, 8:00 a.m. - $45.00 Our destinations are the Hopkins County Courthouse in Sulphur Springs and the Franklin County Courthouse in Mt Vernon. A sumptuous lunch at Burton's Family Restaurant in Sulphur Springs will top off a wonderful outing. Outing rescheduled due to Memorial Day weekend conflicts. You must order early to ensure these outings make. Jewelry Making Class Beginning Wednesdays, June 1 12:30 p.m. - Cost of supplies only. Instructors Patty and Butch Mitchell are professional jewelry designers and have made their living for years designing and selling their designs. If you are interested in learning how to make jewelry, please sign up soon. There will be no fee for the class, but you will need to purchase your own supplies. You can buy from the instructor or from Wal-mart. You can borrow supplies the first class.

Have fun & enjoy upbeat music. Turbo Kickboxing Tuesdays, 5:45-6:40 p.m. Any10 Visits - $35.00 This low impact, no-contact kickboxing exercise class includes a warm up, energizing punch and kick combos, and strengthening cool down set to incredible music. Garland Senior Services Travel Policies When you arrive at the center for a day trip or overnight trip please be considerate. Park on the side of the building away from the front door. Trips created by travel/cruise companies: Travel insurance will be included in the cost of these trips when available. You can refuse the purchase of the insurance by signing a waiver of responsibility for the City of Garland. Balance is usually due 60 days prior to departure for most companies. Cancellation after that time results in a proration of your refund and forfeiture of your deposit. See itineraries for specifics from each company. Roommates: The center keeps a roommate list at the front desk. We will try to match you up with a suitable travel partner. However, you must check with us often to guarantee how the process is going. Trips created by staff at the senior center No refunds will be given for day trips unless you notify the center at least 24 hours prior to departure. Notification on the morning of departure does not qualify for a refund. If you do not show up for a trip by the departure time, you will not receive a refund. Refunds for all trips (day and overnight) are based on amounts that are refundable by the vendor. In the case of theater performances and baseball games where tickets are nonrefundable, you may sell your space to another person. That person must notify the center prior to departure that they will be going with us as a substitution. Deposits for overnight trips are due at registration. Balance for overnight trips is due 30 days prior to departure. If you must cancel, all money is refundable at that point unless stated otherwise. Refunds after that time will be based on the amounts refundable by vendors. If you require special assistance or have a special needs diet you must notify the center at the time of registration. If you need a roommate, you need to inform the center at the time of registration.

Free transportation to both senior program locations is available to seniors, age 60 and older, living in the city of Garland, who participate in the nutrition program. Meals are served Monday through Friday at 11:30 a.m. The cost is only a small, suggested and anonymous donation. There is paperwork that must be completed before being able to participate in the program. Please call if you have any questions. This service is supported, in part, by the Dallas Area Agency on Aging (DAAA), the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS), and Dallas County.
