2 THE STORY OF MATHER EDGEWATER Lunch, Entertainment, and More Join the Celebration! Meet new friends or bring a group either way, each Mather LifeWays luncheon will be the party of the month! With a delicious lunch, toe-tapping live entertainment, an array of neighborhood resources, and a warm welcome for all, these events are part of what makes the Edgewater neighborhood a great place to Age Well! Founded in 1941, Mather LifeWays is a non-denominational not-for-profit organization that enhances the lives of older adults by creating Ways to Age Well Ṣ M Our program in Edgewater is the result of a shared vision of community service partners seeking to connect older adults to resources. It consists of community partnerships formed between Chicago Methodist Senior Services (CMSS), City Lit Theater, Edgewater Presbyterian Church, Bethany Retirement Community, the Heart-to-Heart program at St. Gertrude s Church, St. Andrew s Greek Orthodox Church, and CJE SeniorLife. 3 Oktoberfest Luncheon Monday, October 30 Entertainment: Frank K Trio Savor the tastes and scents of the season while swinging to the music of the Frank K Trio! Enjoy traditional German tunes as well as favorite hits from the 50s, 60s, and 70s. Delight in a tasty menu of bratwurst, sauerkraut, roasted chicken, potato salad, fresh fruit, rolls, dessert, and beverages. This event is sure to warm your heart! Reservations begin Tuesday, September 26 and are required by Wednesday, October 25. Holiday Celebration Luncheon Monday, December 11 Entertainment: Edizon Dayao Tis the season for spirited fun! Enjoy the magic of the holidays with a bright and beautiful performance of popular holiday tunes by Edizon Dayao in a one-of-akind audience experience. Wisconsin: Music & Harvest Delight Wednesday, October 4 Take a scenic fall trip with us to Delavan, Wisconsin, for a delicious farm-to-table lunch at Rosewood and enjoy The Beat Goes On, a performance by Mark, Gretch, and Jo as they take you down memory lane with songs from the heart of swing, R&B and other popular music. First, we ll stop at the Royal Oak Farm Orchard in Harvard, where we ll take a guided wagon tour and then have time on your own to purchase a variety of products like apple cider donuts, pies, apple butter, and honey. For lunch, choose from roasted citrus garlic crusted organic chicken with char-grilled asparagus, rice pilaf; vegetable risotto with arugula, parmesan cheese, and sun-dried tomato basil pesto; pan-seared tilapia with sautéed ratatouille, roasted baby potatoes, and tomato cilantro crudo; or braised burgundy beef tips with roasted onion, rutabaga, and carrots and a puree of sweet potato. Increased balance, stamina, flexibility, brain health, and reduced blood pressure... all are possible benefits of tai chi! Tai chi is a series of movements performed in a slow, gentle, focused manner and accompanied by deep breathing. Come try something new you ll learn and practice in a supportive, compassionate environment and feel better! Please wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothing, and bring a pair of socks. (They are on the second floor of the Edgewater Presbyterian Church!) City Lit is a not-for-profit theater company founded in 1979, and is devoted to stage adaptations of literary material. Their mission includes making live theater accessible through low ticket prices. Film Screening: I Remember Better When I Paint Tuesday, December 5, 2:00 4:00p.m. Introduction by documentary co-director Berna Huebner. The groundbreaking documentary shows how the creative arts can enhance the quality of life for people with Alzheimer s. Creative activities such as drawing, painting, and museum visits can reawaken a sense of identity, dignity, and reengagement among those with memory loss. Following the screening, there will be a discussion and play facilitated by drama therapist Judy Holstein. Location: Wesley Place, 1415 W. Foster Avenue Let s Talk, LGBT Aging Thursday, November 2, 12:30 2:00 p.m. Aging is complex enough as it is. But the LGBT community is faced with additional aging related challenges. Date: Wednesday, November 8, 1:00 3:00 p.m. Maudie PG-13 Sally Hawkins stars in this biopic of Canadian artist Maud Lewis, who overcame rheumatoid arthritis to become one of the most revered folk painters in her country's history. After taking a job in Nova Scotia as a housekeeper for a lifelong bachelor (Ethan Hawke), Lewis hones her painting skills while attracting national attention for her inspirational story. Date: Wednesday, November 29, 1:00 3:00 p.m. Dunkirk PG-13 In May 1940, Germany advanced into France, trapping Allied troops on the beaches of Dunkirk. Under air and ground cover from British and French forces, troops were slowly and methodically evacuated from the beach using every serviceable naval and civilian vessel that could be found. One-Person Show Storytelling Workshop Storytelling is a unique craft used over the ages to communicate myths, legends, and more. Learn the skills needed to be a great storyteller. Dates: Thursdays, 12:30 1:30 p.m. Readers Theater This class focuses on the creation of a solo performance exploring storytelling, character work, monologues, and other forms of expression to tell your story. Students will learn public speaking techniques, plot structure, and how to incorporate theatrical elements into an entertaining long-form performance. Dates: Tuesdays, 6:30 8:00 p.m. Cost: $20 Walking Club, Strong & Fit, and Stretching Join other older adults in a group walk around Edgewater and Berger Park. Socialize while you exercise! The scripts will be plays that are currently being produced in Chicago, so the class will have a chance to see the play in action and discuss.
