The Hokies participated in the 2001 event on the campus of Penn State. Tech, which was unseeded, lost to No. 7 seed Michigan, 35-6, in the opening round and was then eliminated with a loss to Edinboro the next day. Tech is 8-2 overall with losses to then-no. 25 Iowa State (17-16 in the first match of the season) and a setback to then-no. 4 Wisconsin. Both of theose teams are at this event. Eight Tech wrestlers are ranked in at least one poll. Pete Yates, who was 16-0 at 157 pounds, was having trouble making weight and now bumps up to 165 pounds. Pronunciation Guide Chris DIAZ... DEE-azz JARROD Garnett... juh-rod David MARONE... Muh-RO-nee Zach NEIBERT... NYE-bert Dong was 14-1 in unattached competition this season, winning the Michigan State Open and placing second at the Penn State Open. With the news of his return, Tech shot up to eighth in the country in several tournament power rankings as Tech now has eight of its starters ranked and nine of the 10 starters have been ranked in the top 20 nationally at some point this season. TIES TO UNI Northern Iowa head coach Doug Schwab, in his fist year at UNI, is a former assistant coach at Virginia Tech under Tom Brands. His wife, Allyson, is a former Hokie softball player. Fabulous Freshman True freshman Devin Carter has made quite a splash in his short time on campus. The Christiansburg product is 18-3 and ranked eighth in the country at 133 pounds. He won the Hokie Open and took fifth at the Las Vegas Invitational. LOOKING FOR 100 Seniors Chris Diaz and Tommy Spellman are approaching rarefied air when it comes to career wins at Virginia Tech as both are rapidly approaching 100 victories. Diaz (141 pounds) can do it this weekend with two wins as he stands with 98 and Spellman (184 pounds) needs 14 more victories to reach the plateau. In the school s 88 years of wrestling, only four grapplers have reached 100 career wins: Sean Gray (133), Chris Martin (126), David Hoffman (116) and Eric Hall (113). DOublE DippiNG While he s not in the starting lineup, sophomore Andrew Miller is pulling an impressive feat as he played all fall as the No. 2 man at center and guard on the ACC champion football team and is now training with the nationally ranked wrestling squad. 2 hardship waiver in wrestling. This season, he played in 12 games for the football team, seeing action on over 150 offensive snaps. The coaches are hoping to have the heavyweight in shape for the Appalachian State Open at the end of the month and available to the dual meet squad, if needed, by February for the stretch run. In the meantime, he will continue to drill with starting heavyweight David Marone, including this weekend. He will not compete this weekend in Iowa, but will be in attendance working out. SCOUTING CENTRAL MICHIGAN Central Michigan is 1-4 on the year, but has faced a tough schedule this year, taking on No. 1 Cornell, No. 5 Minnesota and No. 9 Lehigh. The Chippewas wrestle Thursday night. CMU is 2-1 all-time against Virginia Tech, including a victory at Blacksburg last season. Tech upset the No. 6 Chippewas in January of 2009 with a win at Mt. Pleasant. That win put the Hokies into the national rankings for the first time and they have been a fixture in the polls since. The Chippewas feature three ranked wrestlers in the latest InterMat Individual Top 20: Scotti Sentes (9th at 133), Ben Bennett (5th at 174) and Jarod Trice (3rd at heavyweight). He enters this weekend s NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals with a career record of In , his team broke all sorts of school records, including dual meet wins (20) and NCAA qualifiers (8). Tech also had upset road wins against No. 17 Michigan and No. 6 Central Michigan. Last year, he coached four ACC champions and helped lead Chris Diaz to an All-American finish at Nationals. His recruiting has taken off, and the Hokies have had four-consecutive top- 11 national recruiting classes under his direction, including the 11th-best class in the country last year according to InterMat. Dresser is a familiar name in the New River Valley as he was the head coach at Christiansburg High School for 10 seasons, winning the Group AA state title five times and claiming second place three times. Prior to his stint in Christiansburg, he led Grundy High School to eight titles in as many years. A native of Humboldt, Iowa, Dresser was a two-time high school state champion at Humboldt High School. In 2009, Dresser was inducted into the Iowa High School Athletic Association Wrestling Hall of Fame. He graduated from the University of Iowa, where he won a national title in 1986 at 142 pounds. Dresser was a two-time All-American (placing fourth in 1985 at 142 pounds), as well as a two-time Big Ten champion. For his performance in 1986, he received the Mike Howard Award, given to the most valuable wrestler for the Hawkeyes. Dresser earned his B.S. in general studies from Iowa in He and his wife, Penny, have three children: Emma (12), Anna (10) and Jack (8).
