1 W R E S T L I N G Contact: Bryan Johnston blj@vt.edu VS #6 VIRGINIA TECH PENN STATE #4 Head coach Kevin Dresser (Ninth Season) Record 4-0, 0-0 ACC Record Head coach 4-0, 1-0 Big Ten Cael Sanderson (Sixth Season) Hokies at Las Vegas Eight Virginia Tech wrestlers placed at the prestigious Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational, led by three finalists - Joey Dance (125), Devin Carter (141) and Ty Walz (285) - in the two-day competition which concluded Dec. 6 inside the Las Vegas Convention Center. In the team race, the Hokies finished in third place with points behind champion Minnesota and Ohio State. Series History Virginia Tech will try to do something Friday night that it has never done: beat Penn State. The Hokies have never beaten Penn State in five previous tries: a 27-2 loss in 1962 on the road; a 30-0 loss in 1963 on the road; a 28-0 loss in 1964 on the road; a 25-5 loss at home in 1965; and a 26-9 loss in the 2010 Virginia Duals. Nittany Lions Last Match The fourth-ranked Penn State wrestling squad dominated Maryland 38-3 in its Big Ten dual-meet opener, winning all but one bout and picking up two pins and five major decisions. Fifth-ranked Jake Gulibon, won the marquee matchup of the night, defeating Maryland s No. 11 Geoffrey Alexander, by a score of 9-2 as PSU rolled to a win in College Park, Maryland. The Best Around Virginia Tech will be heading into the proverbial Lion s den Friday night as it will compete in sold-out Rec Hall in front of over 6,000 fans. Penn State has won the last four NCAA titles under Cael Sanderson and is ranked fourth this year in the latest dual meet poll. HOKIES PROJECTED STARTERS Wt. Tech will be looking for its second top-10 win of the season, a feat that hasn t been accomplished since 2011 when the Hokies upset No. 2 Oklahoma State and No. 4 Wisconsin on back-to-back days at the NWCA National Duals in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Success in Las Vegas The Virginia Tech wrestling squad competed in its second-most competitive tournament of the year - behind the NCAA Championships - early in December at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Collegiate Invitational. The tournament featured 10 teams ranked in the top 25, including No. 2 Minnesota, No. 3 Cornell and No. 7 Ohio State. The Hokies wrestling squad had eight individual place winners, three individual finalists and 12 wins over ranked opponents in their impressive third-place team finish. Weight Change for Carter 141-pounder Devin Carter began the season in the 149 weight class, but has recently bumped down into the 141 spot. The two-time All-American and 2014 NCAA finalist has seen lots of success in the 141 class, holding a 22-2 record at that weight in the last two seasons, falling only to No. 1 Logan Stieber, the threetime defending NCAA Champion. GAME NOTES One Tough Dance Tech sophomore Joey Dance has looked tougher than ever this season, starting the season with an 11-1 record in the 125 weight class. The 2014 NCAA All- American has picked up victories over ranked wrestlers Josh Rodriguez (North Dakota State; twice) and Nathan Tomasello (Ohio State) this season. His lone loss came against No. 2 Nahshon Garrett (Cornell), last year s NCAA runner-up, in the finals of the Las Vegas Invitational. He took down Garrett first, but eventually fell 6-4. Graduated but Wrestling Devin Carter and Chris Moon have both already earned their undergraduate degrees at Virginia Tech. Carter graduated with a degree in psychology and is currently enrolled in graduate school for curriculum and instruction, and Moon earned his degree in electrical engineering last May and is currently working on a second degree in computer engineering. Beating the Buckeye s In their fourth dual meet of the year, the Hokies downed then-no. 4 Ohio State in a thrilling match in front of 2,833 spectator s in Cassell Coliseum. Both teams won five matches, including one pin apiece, but Ty Walz s two-point win at heavyweight provided the difference as the Hokies won on the third criteria (match points scored in non-fall matches). 3 V I R G I N I A T E C H W R E S T L I N G GAME NOTES (Cont.) Redshirt Freshmen Contributing Tech has welcomed a few new faces to its starting lineup this season with three redshirt freshmen in the Hokies starting 10. The three youngsters have started the year with an impressive combined record. Kevin Norstrem wrestles at 133, Zach Epperly is in the 174 spot, and Jared Haught competed at 197. All three placed in Las Vegas with both Epperly and Haught finishing fifth at the tough tournament. NCAA Success Over the last three seasons the Hokie grapplers have finished in the top 11 at the NCAA Championships. Last season s eighth-place finish was the highest in program history and the second-straight year in the top 10. Devin Carter became the program s first national finalist when he made it to the final match at 141 pounds, where he lost to Logan Stieber of Ohio State. Highlights: Career Record: Two ACC Titles 1986 national champion at Iowa COACH Two-Staight ACC Titles The Hokies became ACC Champions for the secondstraight season last March when the Tech wrestling squad captured the 2014 ACC Championship in its home arena. The Hokies will be looking for three in a row this March when the Championships are held in Pittsburgh. Record Watch Tech s Devin Carter is third in Tech history in career pins with 34, needing only three more to move into second place. The Hokies won ACC championships in both 2013 and 2014 and finished in the top 10 nationally in both of those years. In seven of his first eight seasons, Dresser had a wrestler win an ACC title, and on five occasions, he had a wrestler named Most Outstanding Wrestler at the ACC Championships, including each of the past three seasons. In 2007, it was Jon Bonilla-Bowman who won the ACC title at 157 pounds and, in 2009, Matt Epperly came out of nowhere to win the 165-pound class and advance to the NCAA Championships. In 2012, Pete Yates won the 165-pound title, pulling a major upset in the final to earn the honor. Jarrod Garnett earned the honor at 125 pounds after rolling through his bracket in In 2014, Devin Carter returned from a devastating injury midway through the season to help lead the Hokies to a title. He won the gold medal at 141 pounds and took home the hardware for Most Outstanding Wrestler. In the past three seasons, Tech s stock has risen on the national scene. In , six Tech wrestlers qualified for the NCAA Championships, and the Hokies finished tied for 11th place. Carter finished fifth at 133 pounds and Yates took fifth at 165 pounds, as both earned All-America honors. Carter was also named the ACC s Wrestler of the Year after the season. The season was even better, as the Hokies won their first ACC team title and all 10 wrestlers qualified for the NCAA Championships for the first time in program history. Tech finished 10th at the NCAAs, and a program-best four wrestlers were crowned All-Americans. Last season saw the Hokies take a big step, as they finished eighth at the NCAA Championships, with three All-Americans, including Carter, who became the first national finalist in program /virginia.tech.wrestling
