1 Gazette Sunday, August 27, Fillmore Avenue, Alexandria, VA ADMINISTRATIVE UPDATE This week is a historic time for Goodwin House and specifically for Goodwin House Alexandria. On August 25 th we celebrated our 50 th anniversary of serving the aging population in Northern Virginia. The remarkable residents and accomplishments of GHA since 1967 are a real hallmark. Residents, family members, friends, and staff have touched each other s lives. Happy Anniversary, Goodwin House Alexandria! Even the sun and the moon came together this week to celebrate our 50 th! Harry Baldwin BIG THANKS! Thanks to all those who helped make Thursday, August 17, so special with the visit of Bishop Johnston for the blessing of the new Health Care Center. The many contributors were ushers and greeters, readers and chalice bearers, altar guild, staff and resident transporters, Housekeeping and Dining Services, Jim Diehl and Peggy Moore leading our music, the tour by Josh Bagley, and most especially Jane Rosman, who orchestrated it all and coordinated scheduling with the Diocese and the lovely lunch for the Bishop with the Residents Council and Executive Staff. Thanks for everyone s assistance, attendance, and participation! Bruce Stewart BUDGET MEETING The budget presentation to the residents, originally scheduled for Monday, August 28 at 2:00 p.m. in the Auditorium, has been changed to Thursday, August 31 at 2:00 p.m. in Auditorium ABC. 2 IF YOU ARE NEW If you are new to Goodwin House, you may not be familiar with our listserv or Google Group. Our group is called gharesidents. It exists to give GHA residents the opportunity to exchange information of mutual interest, to make timely announcements, to ask for and give advice, and to engage in other neighborly discourse (avoiding political and other advocacy). We often attach to our messages video clips or slide shows that we think will interest other residents. Who can be a member? Any GHA resident with access to a computer can join our Google Group. If you do not have your own computer, you can use any of the machines available to residents in the Computer Center located on G1, opposite the swimming pool. Getting started. Simply send an to Henry Lowenstern at hlowenstern@gmail.com or to Mike McCaffree at mikemccaffree@gmail.com. We will enroll you as a member with your address. Once you are a member, you can choose whether to receive all messages other residents send to gharesidents@googlegroups.com. You also will be able to use that same address to send messages and attachments to other members. The gharesidents website. If you prefer not to receive gharesidents s, you have the option to go to our website: groups.google.com/ group/gharesidents to read all messages and attachments, including comments about them submitted by other members. Henry Lowenstern BACK-TO-SCHOOL OUTREACH PROJECT The Memorial Chapel Outreach Committee Back-to-School Project for 2017 is supporting the work of the T. C. 3 REUSABLE GREEN DINING CONTAINERS Several green dining containers have been found in trash cans! The green containers are reusable and are meant to be returned to Dining Services. There are several green recycling bins around Goodwin House where you may return them. We would greatly appreciate it if all green containers are returned to a designated recycling bin when you are done with them: Locations of Green Recycling Bins: Main Dining Room by both entrances Across from elevators 7 & 8 G1 across from entrance to Mixing Bowl (Employee Dining Room) Thank you! Dining Services Management Team UPGRADING KEYLESS LOCKS We are in the process of upgrading all residents doors keyless locksets with the latest in security-lock technology. Work has started in the Tower and will move to the Original Building once the Tower apartments are completed. Front Desk staff will notify residents beforehand so they know when to expect the technicians. The conversion process is relatively easy and not very time-consuming. Residents are not required to do anything to facilitate this process. The new locksets operate in the same manner as the old ones, and key cards now used by residents to enter their apartments will automatically work with the newly installed locksets. Your keycards also should give you access to the Small House via the courtyard. If your keycard does not work, please see Front Desk staff. Questions may be directed to Front Desk Manager Selam Belete or Administrator of Operations David Baker. David P. Baker The deadline for the weekly Gazette is every Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. Please submit all articles via to Jenny Wu: cwu@goodwinhouse.org Gazette 8/27/2017 3
