1 VOL. X, NO. 28 $1.00 PER YEAR JULY 15, <111 COpy HERE'S THE FIRST LETTER FROM OUR 1965 AMBASSADOR Mary Ann McManamon, Bethlehem's Community Am bassador to Japan, left Bethlehem June 13. However, it was July 3 before she actually left the United States for Japan. The intervening lime was spent in a more intensive and extensive program of orientation than any of the previous ambassadors has experienced. Her letter shares this preparation with the community. a week, with extra time required for language tape practice. The eighty people involved are divided into several groups according to "affinity" for the language, (No one had had previous experience with Japanese), so that class size ranges from seven to ten people. Our teachers are all Japanese, mostly students from California In the top picture is Craig Doremus of 33 Marlboro Road, Delmar, who carried the Tri-Village flag in this year's Soap Box Derby and placed 6th In Class B. In the bottom picture Craig is on the right in one of the 6 heats he had to complete. He raced with 10 stitches in a wound received previously. Craig IS 12 years old and was sponsored by Meurs and Dutton. Trophies and prizes will be awarded all winners at the Soap Box Derby Dinner on July 17. Thursday, July 1, 1965 Katherine Branson School Ross, California Dear Folks, The three weeks' since I left Delmar have been exciting and different, even though I am still in the United States. The Experiment in International Living is expanding its orientati~n program for the Japanese group from the usual three or four day period to a three week period. Our course certainly has been intensive. Classes are, six days GE HERE! A SOO-acre tract on Long Lane in the Tow n of Bethlehem has been chosen by the General Electric Company for a multimillion dollar plastics plant. The plont, on which construction has already started, will be the first of its kind in the world, GE said, ond initiolly will employ about 150 people, mostly professional personnel. The company's decision to build in the Town was hailed by Supervisor Bertram E. Kohinke, who, with other town and state officials, has been working with General Electric for some months. We have several teachers during the day, so that we will not become used to anyone dialect. Today we had our final exam, which consisted of a taped oral dialogue, and a six page written exam. The purpose of the exam was to find out how much we ~ auld learn in the three week period. At the end of our eight week stay in Japan, we will be given another test, to find our (hopeful) increase in knowledge. It has not been all work, however. We are staying at the Katherine Branson School, a beautiful private school north of San Francisco. There are tennis courts, a baseball field, and a heated swimming pool. The scenery is unbelievably beautiful; we are in the heart of lush green (Continued on Page 2)

These factors, coupled with a substantially higher volume of loans when interest rates were remaining relatively stable and a successful containment of expenses, contributed to the significant increase in net operating earnings. Increased interest expense on Savings accounts during the next six months plus the normal additional expenses associated with the large merger recently consummated with The Citizens Trust Company of Schenectady, will tend to restrict the rapid growth of earnings in the remaining six months of this year. President Herzog did not expect that t.he record trend in earnings would continue at its present rate through the remainder of the year, but stated that management does anticipate an increase of modest proportions in Bank earnings for the last six months of Clean-Up Day The Bethlehem Historical Association has announced plans for THE SPOTLIGHT a clean-up day to be held at the headquarters of the Association, the Cedar Hill School building. on Saturday, July 17th. I'm still a farmer and I'll always be a farmer." Those are the words of Robert M. Whitcomb. a graduate electrical engineer by education and one of the most successful owner-trainers of harness horses at Saratoga Raceway by choice. A native of Vermont, Bob's family has been in harness racing since 1880 and even boasted the fastest pacing mare in the world for some years, Lady Wonder 2: But that was long be fore Bob's entrance into the sport. Several years after he had attended the University of Vermont and gained an electrical engineering degree because, "I didn't know what I wanted to do, but I could do math," Bob attended the Saratoga Sale with a friend. The pair walked off with a $400 mare and a two-year-old colt named Billy 12 pr"~i!11 Fingo, a bargain for another THE SPOTLIGHT $400. Although eye trouble plagued Billy, he became a fine (ree-iegged pacer and eame~ a mark of 2:03 and a piece. And more important to Whitcomb, he was the reason [or the purchase of Morton W. [or $750. Morton W. is a [ull brother to Billy Fingo and Whitcomb lauds him as the best and fastest harness horse he has ever had. With more than 50 wins and 160 in the monies in some 230 odd starts. it's no wonder! The 12-year-old, who owns a blistering mark of 2:02 3/5, is currently standing stud at Whitcomb's farm in Essex Junction, Vt., but is expected back at tile Spa course for another stellar season in the near future. Veteran reinsman Jerry Raider, one of Morton's 17 different drivers over the years, once said of the steed. "This horse knows more about racing than I do."
