3 Homecoming and Family Weekend 2017 Schedule of Events October 6 8 THROUGHOUT THE WEEKEND Art Exhibitions Flaten Art Museum and Groot Gallery Center for Art and Dance Friday 10 a.m. 5 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. 5 p.m., Sunday noon 5 p.m. Ken Gonzales-Day: Shadowlands September 1 October 29, 2017 This exhibition is a survey of the artist s career and considers the historical construction of race in America. Gonzales-Day combines scholarly research and a photo-journalistic sensibility with rich aesthetics to create jarringly haunting portraits of historical trauma present in both the people and the land of the United States. Object Study: Fall 2017 September 8 December 20, 2017 Object Study (CAD 205) is a hybrid gallery-classroom a place where students can have close and repeated encounters with artworks from Flaten Art Museum s collection to deepen their understanding of the subjects covered in classes across the curriculum. 5 8 p.m. Ghosts of St. Olaf Tour Begins on the steps of the Theater Building (Rain site: Tomson Hall 280 Alumni Auditorium) Vice President for Student Life Greg Kneser will lead a campus tour of haunted venues on the Hill, ending behind Thorson Hall with a bonfire, hot chocolate, and the tale of the Red Hat Boy p.m. Bonfire Behind Thorson Hall (Rain site: Buntrock Commons Crossroads) Gather for a bonfire, hot chocolate, and s mores. All alumni, family members, students, and community members are welcome to attend. 3

Same-day registrants (including current students) may participate for $5 (but you will not receive a T-shirt). 8 a.m. Homecoming 5K Run Starts at Skoglund Fieldhouse (rain or shine, but canceled in case of severe weather) Check in prior to the run to sign your waiver. 4

7 8 a.m. 2 p.m. Photo Scavenger Hunt Play the Homecoming photo scavenger hunt and you ll be entered into a drawing for a gift card to the St. Olaf Bookstore. Four winning entries will be drawn at 4 p.m. on Saturday. To enter, send an with your four pictures, your name, and or phone number to PhotoHunt@stolaf.edu. By submitting photos you are giving St. Olaf permission to use the photos for social media purposes. To play, take a picture of yourself and your friends in four of the six situations below: 1. Built in 1877, this original building once housed the school s classrooms, library, housing for students and faculty, and a dining room. 2. Stand by the 1874 sign at the base of the Hill on St. Olaf Avenue. 3. Built in 2003, this memorial is tuned to the key of D, the key of Beautiful Savior. 4. Named after Ole E. Rølvaag, you ll find books, journals, videos, online resources, and special collections. 5. Find the cornerstone of Boe Memorial Chapel. The blue-green soapstone is a gift from Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim, Norway and is engraved with the year 1953, the seal of the cathedral, and the seal of St. Olaf College. 6. The Theater building is home to two theater spaces: Kelsey Theater and Haugen Theater, a 110-seat flexible space. Find the Haugen Theater entrance. 8 a.m. 2 p.m. Holland Hall Open House and Tour Enjoy a self-led tour of the newly remodeled spaces of Holland Hall. With natural light throughout the building, students and faculty will enjoy the new offices, classrooms, and gathering areas. Come check out all of the new features and designs of this historic building a.m. Town Hall Gathering with President David R. Anderson 74 Tomson Hall 280 (Alumni Auditorium) All visiting alumni, family members, and campus guests are invited to an interactive presentation by President Anderson, who will provide his perspective on higher education in America today and St. Olaf College s place within that landscape. Refreshments provided :30 a.m. Learning Seminar: The Piper Center for Vocation and Career Regents Hall 150 Parents and students are invited to hear directly from the director of the Piper Center and from current Oles who have leveraged the Piper Center s resources. Learn more about the current job market for graduates of four-year institutions and about the support that the Piper Center provides to students: vocational discernment, career coaching, student-alumni networking, career exploration trips, on-campus recruiting, internships, entrepreneurial programs, and much more. 5

9 All guests and students are invited for lunch on the campus green, where the college s food service provider Bon Appétit will serve a local harvest feast featuring ingredients from southern Minnesota. Pre-registration for this meal is requested, though not required, as on-site tickets will be available for purchase. During lunch, enjoy a game of BINGO from your table, vying for St. Olaf-themed prizes. Get your school spirit enhanced with St. Olaf-themed face paint from 11 a.m. until the football game starts at 1 p.m., at which time they will relocate to Manitou Field. Hosted by the Student Activities Committee. Walk the trails with Natural Lands Curator Kathy Shea and student naturalists. Learn about the abundant variety of flora and fauna in this protected area and how St. Olaf faculty and students use the land. 4:15 6 p.m. GLOW! Campfire Social Fire pit behind Thorson Hall (Forest Inn in case of rain) St. Olaf GLOW! The climbing wall (must be at least 18 years old) will also be available, subject to the rules and regulations of the wall. 16 General Information and Hours The Cage The Cage, located on the second floor of Buntrock Commons, offers short-order meals, snacks, beverages, and baked goods. Check the TV screens in Buntrock Commons for updates. Wireless Internet Simply connect your device to the St. Olaf Guest network. If you work at a participating eduroam institution, your device should automatically connect to the St. Olaf eduroam wireless network. Lost and Found Visit the Buntrock Commons information desk. Public Safety Call to reach Public Safety. Pause Kitchen The Lion s Pause is a student-run nightclub located on the first floor of Buntrock Commons.
