2 TRANSFER STUDENT ORIENTATION SCHEDULE 2016 THURSDAY, AUGUST 18 4:30 5:30 p.m. Transfer Student and Family Welcome Reception Center Room, Elaine Langone Center, 2nd floor Newly transferred students and their families are invited to meet with University administrators for an official University welcome. Transfer students will meet their Orientation Assistants and attend dinner that evening as a group. 5:45 7 p.m. Many Nations, One Bucknell Sojka Lawn (Rain location: Sojka Pavilion, Kenneth G. Langone Athletics and Recreation Center) Enjoy delicious international food and relax with your roomates. 7 8 p.m. Community Meeting with Your Orientation Assistant Student Space, Ground Floor, Elaine Langone Center This is an opportunity to learn about how the Transfer Orientation Program was designed to meet your needs. Your Orientation Assistants (OAs) will facilitate this conversation, and answer any questions you may have about the Orientation Program and Bucknell p.m. The Library Unbound Bertrand Library Make a night of it at the Bertrand Library. Play bingo to win prizes for your room. Complete your library passport by visiting a variety of Library & IT resources for a chance to win prizes. Have some snacks, explore the stacks and listen to the tunes of DJ Big A. 8:30 9:30 p.m. Glenn s Western Roundup Bostwick Dining Hall, Elaine Langone Center Grab your boots and bandanas. Come learn how to line dance as you make many new friends. You will talk about this program long after Orientation is over. 10 p.m. midnight VIP Night at Barnes & Noble The bookstore will open to offer an exclusive shopping night to the Class of Stop down and enjoy some music, photo booth fun, refreshments, prize raffles and games. Enter to win a $250 shopping spree to the bookstore. Bookstore staff will help new students find their textbooks in a one-on-one environment or pick up pre-ordered books. You ll learn the benefits of rental textbooks, digital books, charging to your B-Bill and refund & exchange policies. You can also check out the latest Bucknell merchandise and much more. 10 p.m. midnight Late Night at the KLARC Kenneth G. Langone Athletics and Recreation Center Play pickup basketball, dodgeball, indoor soccer, racquetball or workout. Visit the KLARC and get a glimpse of the programs offered by Recreation Services. 1
3 FRIDAY, AUGUST a.m. Breakfast with Academic Associate Deans Center Room, Elaine Langone Center 2nd floor Representatives from the Academic Deans offices will be in attendance to meet with individual students, discuss academic expectations and provide updates on meetings with advisors. 9 9:45 a.m. Career Development Center (CDC) Center Room, Elaine Langone Center 2nd floor The Career Development Center is much ore than the place to go to find a job when you are ready to graduate. The CDC is here for you from the first day you arrive. Learn about the various ways the CDC can help you during your time at Bucknell and what you should be thinking about right now. 10 a.m. noon Individual Adviser and Writing Center Meetings - Morning Group As previously assigned Each transfer student should have received information about their assigned advisor and a scheduled time for a first meeting. 4 3:15 4:30 p.m. Getting Involved Center Room, Elaine Langone Center, 2nd floor Getting involved in student organizations, campus activities and civic engagement projects can be a great way to develop passions outside of the classroom and build connections to other members of the Bucknell Community. Representatives from Campus Activities and Programs (CAP) and Fraternity and Sorority Affairs will be in attendance to talk broadly about getting involved. Also in attendance will be several upper-class students who are broadly engaged in various areas of campus life to talk about their experiences and begin getting you connected. 5:15 6 p.m. Dinner in the Grove (Rain location: Sojka Pavilion, Kenneth G. Langone Athletics and Recreation Center) Enjoy a delicious meal in one of the most beautiful places on campus. 6 7 p.m. Shabbat Service Meditation Chapel, Rooke Chapel Come join Bucknell s Jewish students as we celebrate Kabbalat Shabbat. 7 8:30 p.m. Maura Cullen Weis Center We are caught in times of political correctness where saying the right thing is worlds away from doing the right thing. You will explore race, gender, sexual orientation, age, socioeconomic class, religion, ability and size discrimination in an interactive format. 8:30 9:30 p.m. Discussion Breakout Sessions Various locations your OA will direct you Meet with your OAs, RA and hallmates to talk about the topics presented in the previous session. 9:30 p.m. Midnight Old Bison Street Festival Walker Street in front of 7th Street House (Rain location: Sojka Pavilion, Kenneth G. Langone Athletics and Recreation Center) Experience the atmosphere of a street festival on campus, with live music and festival snacks. 9:30 11:30 p.m. Late Night at the 7th Street Studio & MakerSpace 7th Street Studio Visit 7th Street Studio and the MakerSpace and discover all the creative resources available to you. Choose from a selection of projects that will help make your residence hall room feel more like a home. Personalize mirrors, frames and waste paper cans. All projects are free. 3
5 11 p.m. 1 a.m. Pancakes and Eggs Late-night Breakfast Bostwick Dining Hall, Elaine Langone Center Your OAs are cooking delicious late-night chocolate chip pancakes and hearty omelets for you. Midnight 2 a.m. Midnight Madness at Walmart Get all of your shopping done at midnight. Buses leave at midnight from the Smith Hall parking lot and in front of the Weis Center. SATURDAY, AUGUST 20 6 a.m. midnight Breakfast and Lunch Bostwick Dining Hall, Elaine Langone Center The Dining Hall is now open regular hours. Eat at your convenience. 9:30 10:30 a.m. School of Management Welcome Brunch Terrace Room, Elaine Langone Center This welcome brunch provides an opportunity for declared Management majors to meet and mingle with classmates, faculty and staff of the School of Management. 10 a.m. noon ENGR 100 First Meeting Dana/Olin Science Quadrangle Come meet your classmates, TAs and professors to learn more about the course and for a challenging and fun first-shot at engineering problem solving. Note that you may get wet and/or dirty, so dress appropriately. This session is required for all Engineering students and Arts & Sciences students enrolled in ENGR a.m. Pre-Law and Pre-Health Information Sessions Any student interested in a profession in law or the health professions is welcome to attend one of these information sessions. If you have a conflict during this time, individual appointments will be available through the Career Development Center. You have your course schedule; now your OAs will show you how to get to your classes, including some insider tips such as shortcuts for rainy days. 5 6:30 p.m. Picnic Dinner Uphill lawn, Elaine Langone Center (Rain location Gerard Fieldhouse) 7 8 p.m. Ray for the Orange and the Blue Sojka Pavilion, Kenneth G. Langone Athletics and Recreation Center Paint yourself orange and blue before you head over to Sojka Pavilion to learn about Bucknell pride and spirit through this University tradition. You will learn the Alma Mater and our University fight song Ray Bucknell p.m. Activities Unlimited Christy Mathewson Memorial Stadium (Rain location: Gerhard Fieldhouse, Kenneth G. Langone Athletics and Recreation Center) Explore the more than 150 student clubs and organizations Bucknell offers and receive your Ray Bucknell t-shirt. Enjoy pizza and snacks while trying out some of the lawn games this is your chance to be on the 50 yard line of Bucknell s home football field. 5

SUNDAY, AUGUST 21 10:30 a.m. 1:30 p.m. Brunch Bostwick Dining Hall, Elaine Langone Center Eat brunch at your convenience. 10:30 a.m. 12:30 p.m. Jewish Student Bagel Brunch Berelson Center, St. George Street Enjoy a traditional bagel brunch, and meet other first-year and upperclass students from the Bucknell Hillel community. 11 a.m. noon Protestant Worship Service Rooke Chapel Come and join us for worship at the Rooke Chapel on Sunday. It s a great place for spiritual growth and fellowship outside of the classroom. Everyone is welcome. 3-4 p.m. Department of Theatre and Dance Open House Harvey M. Powers Theatre, Coleman Hall Meet current students and faculty in the Department of Theatre and Dance on the Powers Stage, who will give short presentations, design/tech demonstrations and performances, followed by refreshments. 8 5:30 7 p.m. Dessert Reception Rooke Chapel Lawn Enjoy dessert on the Chapel lawn, where you started Orientation five short days ago. This is your chance to take pictures with your hallmates and new friends before Convocation and Candlelighting, which will conclude your New Student Orientation experience. 7:30 9 p.m. Convocation and Candlelighting Weis Center and Malesardi Quadrangle Convocation officially opens the academic year at Bucknell. After Convocation, you will process up to the Malesardi Quadrangle for the traditional candlelighting ceremony. MONDAY, AUGUST 22 8 a.m. Classes Begin MUSIC DEPARTMENT ENSEMBLE AUDITIONS For further information about ensemble auditions for the Department of Music, please visit the Music Office on the second floor of the Sigfried Weis Music Building. FRIDAY, AUGUST 26 6 p.m. The Bumper Jacksons Outside on the Weis Center Plaza Rain Location: Weis Center Lobby The Bumper Jacksons are hot and sweet, painting America s story from New Orleans brothels to Appalachian hollers. Unafraid to scrap together new sounds from forgotten 78s, the Bumper Jacksons boldly and elegantly balance paying homage to the traditions while fashioning their own unique, DIY style. AUGUST 24 SEPTEMBER 7 Bucknell Peer Education Program Bucknell Title IX Programming Within your first three weeks on campus, you will be invited to participate in two programs focused on Bucknell University s Title IX efforts. Let s Talk About It: Title IX is a mandatory session led by Kate Grimes, Bucknell s Title IX Coordinator, and Rachel Stewart, Interpersonal Violence Prevention Coordinator. In this session, you will learn about Bucknell s Sex Discrimination, Sexual Misconduct, Relationship Violence and Stalking Policy, as well as reporting options and important support resources. The second of these programs, Speak Up, is a peer-led presentation emphasizing a bystander intervention approach, grounded in the belief that everyone has a role to play in ending sexual misconduct, relationship violence and stalking. Please look for an from the Title IX Office for an opportunity to attend these important presentations. 7
