1 2015 Joint Meeting TRB COMMITTEE AFB20 and the AASHTO Technical Committee on Roadside Safety (TCRS) Workshop on Making Roadway Departure Safety a Priority July 12 15, 2015 Chicago, Illinois WORKSHOP OBJECTIVE More than 1.2 million people are killed every year in roadway crashes worldwide. Roadway departure crashes comprise over half of the fatal crashes in the United States every year and are a significant global problem. Various efforts are being undertaken to reduce the roadway departure crash problem. In a recent effort, the AASHTO Technical Committee on Roadside Safety is developing a strategic plan that will provide direction on future research needed to update the Roadside Design Guide and Manual for Assessing Safety Hardware (MASH). The purpose of this workshop is to explore ways to better understand the nature of roadway departure crashes and strategically reduce their frequency and severity. Elements of safe roadside design will be explored. Methods for evaluating the performance of safety hardware at both the design stage and in the field will be presented. Information and data needs required to enable informed decision making will also be discussed. Small groups will meet to review and consider the ideas presented, as well as to develop proposals for further research to achieve meaningful progress in the area of roadside safety.
