1 Jersey General Hospital, States of Jersey Individual Placement (Job) Descriptions for Foundation Year 1 Placement F1 - Care of the Elderly, Chronic Disease Management and Rehabilitation The Dept of Medicine comprises 8 Consultants. There are 8 Medical Middle Grade/Registrars and Junior doctors. serves Jersey with a catchment population of 100,000. The type of work to expect and learning opportunities All F1 Doctors in hospital posts will generally be ward based during the normal working day and expected to deliver the daily medical ward care of all the patients on their ward. The F1 doctor is responsible with other staff for the ward care of patients, the maintenance of the patient s medical record, the initial assessment & clerking of new and emergency admissions as well as assisting in surgical procedures/operations in theatre. They are expected to attend the teaching sessions provided by the department including Xray & audit day sessions. The doctor will be responsible for such other specific clinical duties as allocated by consultants including performing other duties

Placement The type of work to expect and learning opportunities Where the is based Clinical Supervisor(s) for the Main duties of the Typical working pattern in this F1 Cardiology Cardiology. The team consists of a consultant, a registrar and an F1. Due to the small size of the team. The F1 is expected to attend all ward rounds and clerk patients during on-calls. The learning is not solely based on cardiology, as the work load is mainly on general medicine; but there are plenty of opportunities to attend clinics. The cardiology consultant also teaches at bedside regularly during ward rounds. Jersey General Hospital. On-call duties involved covering the medical wards out of hours and carrying the arrest bleep. They are expected to attend the structured teaching programmes provided by the department. The doctor will be responsible for such other specific clinical duties as allocated by consultants including performing other duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances. Each consultant has a special interest in one of the following: Respiratory, Cardiology, Gastroenterology (x2 consultants), Neurology, Renal, Elderly Care and Diabetes/Endocrinology. is closely linked with tertiary services in Southampton and London. The type of work to expect and learning opportunities All F1 Doctors in Medicine cover their specific team s patients across a number of medical wards during the normal working day. They are expected to deliver the daily medical care of these patients irrespective of specialty. The F1 Doctor is not ward-based. Each team comprises a Consultant, Registrar and an F1. There are no other middle grades in teams, apart from a floating EAU F2 who helps out when the team is oncall on weekdays. There is no EAU attachment for F1s. The F1 Doctor is involved with the generic clerking of patients being admitted on their specific team s day on-take, and keeps these patients for the entirety of their stay in hospital irrespective of medical specialty. The seven week cycle in the rota is spit into three: four weeks on ward, one week on nights, and two weeks on holiday. Any leftover patients at the end of the four week on ward cycle are inherited by the team coming onto their on-ward period (usually around 10 patients). The overall educational objectives of the F1 year are to provide the trainee with the knowledge, skills and attitudes to be able to: Take a history and examine a patient Identify and synthesise problems Prescribe safely Keep an accurate and relevant medical record Manage time and clinical priorities effectively Communicate effectively with patients, relatives and colleagues Use evidence, guidelines and audit to benefit patient care Act in a professional manner at all times Cope with ethical and legal issues which occur during the management of patients with general medical problems Educate patients effectively Become life-long learners and teachers.

They take responsibility for problems arising on the ward. They are expected to attend the structured teaching programmes provided by the department. Typical working pattern in this Daily: 0900 Ward round 1700/2000 Handover Mon: Tues: Wed: formal teaching programme Thurs: Fri: Sat: in 7 Sun: in 7 On call requirements: 1 in 7 day on-call ( ), and 1 in 7 night oncall ( ). The employer for this post is the States of Jersey. The post will be based in Jersey General Hospital St. Helier, which is a small sized acute hospital.
9 The type of work to expect and learning opportunities Where the is based Clinical Supervisor(s) for the Main duties of the F1 - Renal Medicine There are 3 medical wards and 1 acute admissions ward covered by 4 Consultants and their team. Each team usually comprises of 1xConsultant, 1xMedical Registrar and 1xFoundation Doctor although rolling registrar positions is common. serves Jersey with a catchment population of ~90,000. is closely linked with tertiary services in Southampton and Chase Farm, but referrals to other specialist centers is common. The job comprises of General Medicine admissions and duties under the supervision of an accomplished Renal Consultant. This FY1 position therefore allows for learning opportunities predominantly in general medicine, but also (with good time management) Renal Medicine. All F1 Doctors in hospital posts will generally be ward based during the normal working day and expected to deliver the daily medical care of all the patients on their ward irrespective of specialty. Whilst in the EAU attachment the F1 will be involved with the generic clerking of patients being admitted and the ongoing care of the patients in the unit. The overall educational objectives of the F1 year are to provide the trainee with the knowledge, skills and attitudes to be able to: Take a history and examine a patient Identify and synthesise problems Prescribe safely Keep an accurate and relevant medical record Manage time and clinical priorities effectively Communicate effectively with patients, relatives and colleagues Use evidence, guidelines and audit to benefit patient care Act in a professional manner at all times Cope with ethical and legal issues which occur during the management of patients with general medical problems Educate patients effectively Become life-long learners and teachers.
