After observing some clinics, you may be able to review your own patients with senior supervision. Theatre lists vary between general gynaecology and urogynaecology. You may be assigned to assist with elective C-sections. There is plenty of scope for developing surgical skills. Please note that as a team, you are expected to review your team s patients on the gynaecology and antenatal/postnatal ward prior to attending clinic or theatre commitments. Annual leave: You are entitled to 9 days of annual leave and are advised to get these in early as the rota may be worked around this to maximise your time off and arrange adequate cover. Study leave:
26 You are entitled to 3.5 study days which may only be used on courses/ conferences etc- FY2 study leave may not be used for exams or revision. Where the placement is based Clinical supervisor(s) for the placement Main duties of the placement Typical working pattern in this placement (e.g. ward rounds, clinics, theatre sessions) During your week, you will be scheduled into clinics and theatres. Miss Choy Lee/ Mr Seaton/ Mr Etokowo During this rotation you will develop a wide range of communication and clinical skills during this rotation; ranging from breaking bad news to antenatal examination and basic surgical skills. The basic week pattern is 8.00am-5pm, daily with 2 half days off on most weeks. Thursday afternoons are scheduled as off for FY2 teaching and Friday afternoons for O&G teaching (provided you aren't on call at these times). On Calls: Additional to this, you should expect one long day on call, 8am-8.30pm per week. During this on call you cover both obstetrics and gynaecology. This on call typically involves managing and reviewing all referrals, A&E and wards; reviewing those on gynae and postnatal wards who are post-take; and reviewing patients in maternity day care and labour ward when needed. You may be called to emergency C-sections or gynaecology cases in theatre. You may have to do routine ward work during your on call. Sometimes, there are others "available for cover" who should help with this; and sometimes someone to help with the elective C-section list. You should also expect one "Gynaecology on call" per weekthis is 1-5pm. During this on call you manage the Gynaecology Emergency Assessment Unit with a senior nurse and review all gynaecology referrals from the wards, A&E and may take referrals from GPs. You also manage any outstanding issues with patients on the gynaecology ward. You will work a total of 5 weekends (there is no 1-5pm on call over weekends), these might be in close succession to fit in your annual/ study leave. Half of these will be nights. After a weekend of nights, you will have the remainder of Monday off. You will also work 2 blocks of nights- these consist of 5 week nights (Monday-Friday 8pm-8.30am). You will be back to a routine week the following week.
