The postholder sees unselected, self-referring patients and therefore will see a range of presentations of sexually transmitted infections and other genital conditions. There are ample opportunities to improve on generic skills including history taking, explanation of conditions/treatment, breaking bad news, patient confidentiality, public health issues and screening. Intermediate trauma management (occasional cover for orthopaedic surgery when on call at weekends) Upper and lower gastrointestinal surgery; breast surgery; endocrine surgery; basic vascular surgery (no vascular reconstruction on site) Learning of management and risk assessment during post take ward rounds (when there are usually 2 consultants with often slightly or sometimes radically different views) Opportunistic learning on other ward rounds and during review with consultant/registrar of medical referrals. Understanding of management of risk, complications and treatment of sepsis, particularly when on call and when covering weekends. Monday lunchtime consultant-run case based seminars for foundation doctors. Weekly Grand Rounds. Regular Morbidity and Mortality meetings. Clinical discussons in theatre. Supervised care of seriously ill patients. Note-keeping, ordering investigations, discharge summaries and prescribing. Multidisciplinary working with ward nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and pharmacists to optimize patient care and achieve timely discharge. Joint care of patients with medical conditions with medical teams (eg diabetic physicians, care of older people physicians, cardiologists and gastroenterologists Attendance at pre-admission clinics. Liaison with Microbiology, Radiology and medical specialities. Attendance in outpatients seeing and presenting new patients. Attendance in theatre and endoscopy: assisting in operations and training in (under supervision) minor procedures or parts of operations (eg drainage of abscess and suturing. Collecting and presenting clinical information in Morbidity and Mortality meetings Involvement in departmental audits. Case presentations at Grand Rounds Daily morning ward rounds with registrar and or consultants. Post take ward rounds with 2 consultants and registrar(s) once a week and after firm on-call weekends. Daily evening ward rounds with or without registrar/ct. Daily examination/observations review of all patients with or without registrar/ct. Daily recording in every patient s notes of observations, results of investigations, clinical management and discharge planning. Prescribing and writing discharge summaries. Ordering investigations and checking on results. Providing information and instruction in hand over to colleagues in the evening. Providing detailed written and verbal patient information and management plan every Friday for the weekend team. Attendance (whenever practical) in theatre. Regular attendance in out-patient clinics. Clinic work including general O&G including choice of specialist clinics including fertility, fetal medicine, oncology, maternal medicine, perinatal psychiatry. The F1 will accompany the consultant on gynaecology ward rounds. Special interest sessions including community midwifery; GUM and smear/colposcopy are offered. Theatre and labour ward are not mandatory but are offered within the placement if the individual wishes this learning opportunity. The F1 is supranumerary but works within the team based system and is fully supported by more senior clinical staff Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Woolwich Sally Watkinson, Arasee Renganathan, Nigel Perks Participating in ward rounds with consultants and registrars, clerking patients in other clinical contexts including clinic, EPU and FAU where their work will be overseen by more senior doctors. There is an expectation that when rostered for ward 7 work this will entail initial assessment and if appropriate examination of the patient with discussion with seniors regarding formulation of a management plan. There are no on calls or weekends. All days from to 5pm. The trainee is released for mandatory regional training
