1 Hampton Roads Chapter Penn State Alumni Association WE ARE... alumni and friends of Penn State living in Hampton Roads. Facebook: Penn State Hampton Roads Website: A YEAR OF FIRSTS The Chapter made significant strides in 2011 within the local community and in our participation in the Alumni Association. For the first time, we received national recognition from the Alumni Association when we were named a recipient of the Chapter Volunteer Awards Outstanding Service Project. We received it for our yearlong commitment to the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia. Several members represented the chapter at an awards dinner at the Nittany Lion Inn, where we received a certificate, patch for our banner and $500 check, which we split with the Foodbank. President Kathryn Barrett spoke at the awards ceremony on the importance of alumni community service. We re pictured in the Foodbank s Spring 2012 newsletter with a brief article. For the first time, the chapter hosted a full course picnic for a visiting sports team after we were contacted by the Dugout Club. We always try to show support for visiting PSU teams but when the baseball team was here to play ODU and NSU during the entire Spring Break week, we turned on the southern charm and fed the team, their parents, alumni and friends between games of a doubleheader with NSU. Chairman Andy Ronemus and his committee hit a home run, according to feedback from players and their families. And it was featured in an article in the AlumnInsider. Inside This Issue March April June August Spring Fling and Annual Dinner Student Care Packages Foodbank Community Service Student Send-off Picnic ALSO!!! Scholarship Admissions Volunteers Board of Directors Elections Membership 2012 Football Schedule Update from Treasurer Sadly, there was another first - dealing with the shock, anger and sadness over the allegations revealed in November 11. In response, PSUHR immediately drafted a statement and quickly, under the leadership of Allie Allen, raised funds from generous members at two TV tailgates. (continued on page 4)

3 Student Care Packages On December 3, 2011, we stuffed 65 boxes full of treats and shipped them to Hampton Roads area undergraduates studying for fall semester finals at Penn State campuses throughout the state. We owe a lot to Miriam and Rich Hartman, who chaired the Care Package Committee for nearly 6 years. They turned over leadership to Becky Burley but promise to continue to pitch in! NEXT CARE PACKAGES: APRIL 21, 2012 Scholarship The Scholarship Committee announced its selections for the winners of the Rose Marie Anderson Memorial Scholarship: Laura Alferes of Virginia Beach and Danielle Williamson of Yorktown. Each received a $1,000 award. Thanks to contributions - big and small - from our members, we can award 2 scholarships annually to undergraduates from Hampton Roads! To be eligible, applicants must have successfully completed at least 2 semesters. Contact Donna Bell at psu.hr@cox.net for more information. Roger Brown s, High St., Portsmouth 11 AM - Just bring yourself! Admissions Volunteers Chaired by Laura Kapsha, a committee of 16 alumni received volunteer training and then hit the college fairs in November 2011 to respond to student interest in Penn State. Were they ever needed! Many times, students and parents were three-deep at the four college fairs Southside and on the Peninsula. Community Service Pictured Beach students display Penn State pamphlets at Virginia Beach Convention Center College Fair. On May 14, 2011, Penn State alumni put on their work shoes & PSU attire and worked in the warehouse at the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia in Norfolk. In 2011, we collected 351 pounds of food (270 meals), volunteered 51 hours, and sorted and bagged 300 mobile pantry bags (4,616 meals). Chaired by Rich Freet, our service shows that the legacy of events like THON doesn t end at the campus boundary or when we graduate! NEXT SERVICE DATE: JUNE 16, 2012 Foodbank of SEVA, Tidewater Drive, Norfolk 9 AM 12 PM 3

5 Board of Directors PRESIDENT Kathryn Barrett, Virginia Beach (79) V. PRESIDENT Jennifer Audifre, Yorktown (03) TREASURER Donna Bell, Yorktown (83) SECRETARY Joni Hafley, Yorktown (80) BOARD MEMBERS AT LARGE - Becky Burley, Suffolk (03) Richard Freet, Yorktown (70) Miriam Hartman, Portsmouth (69) Gary Herbert, Hampton (85) Michael Heckenberger, Hampton (80) Donald McCall, Virginia Beach (77) Andy Ronemus, Portsmouth (95) Elections Open Positions - President and Vice President We will hold a short business meeting at the Spring Fling. Our major item of business is to elect a board of directors for the fiscal year July 1-June 30. All offices are for one year. Kathryn Barrett is rotating out of the president s position after 2 years and is willing to serve on the board, or in a newly created past-president position, which would keep the number of members-at-large the same and would have to be voted on by the membership. Jen Audifre is leaving the board after serving many years as Vice President and a Board member before that. Officeholders must have served on the board for at least one year to be eligible. If you are interested in serving as President, VP or on the board as an at-large member beginning July 1, please contact Kathryn by March 10 th at president@psuhr.org and your name will be placed on the ballot. Student Send-off Picnic Save the date AUGUST 5, 2012 Fort Monroe, Hampton 1 PM 4 PM 5 The Year of Firsts (continued from page 1) It was the first time we had a silent auction for the benefit of preventing child abuse. Altogether we raised $525, which was presented to the Prevent Child Abuse Hampton Roads organization. The board made a commitment to remain involved in activities that help prevent child abuse and is determining what direction we ll go. And it was the first year we ever had a feature article in the newspaper. It focused on our response to the scandal by trying to do something positive in our local community. The firsts came in addition to holding our traditional events. Tides and Admirals owner Ken Young (PSU 72) spoke at our Annual Dinner and Spring Fling 2011 held at the lovely, historic Chamberlin. The location itself and the addition of a DJ made it a first class event chaired by Jen Audifre. August 11 was busy with a trip to a Tides baseball game and the Freshman Sendoff Picnic at Fort Monroe chaired by Gary Herbert. Nine freshmen and their parents as well as scholarship recipient Danielle Williamson joined us for a feast, fun, raffle prizes and Penn State camaraderie. About 100 people in all joined in the summer fun. It was energizing to hear from each student about why he or she chose Penn State and what each will be studying. The freshmen were sent off with a gift- a bucket of unique and helpful items for their dorm rooms, lovingly created by Laura Kapsha. With the ongoing changes at Fort Monroe, we re hoping that the location will be available to us again this year. Hurricane Irene cancelled our annual Big Ten Kickoff Party in September. But Mike Heckenberger chaired a non-stop TV tailgate season with partners Just George s, NASCAR Sports Grill and Roger Brown s, that included two tailgates where the chapter sponsored free appetizers for members! We received 40 tickets in the Alumni Association ticket lottery to our first choice- Homecoming! Donna Bell organized the chapter tailgate which was held in the shadow of Beaver Stadium, Regina and Ed Oswalt assisted with our entry in the parade and Laura Kapsha purchased our signature taffy - distributed as we marched down College Ave!
