What a year it s been! Our chapter has been so active in 2016 and we couldn t have done it without our enthusiastic members. Volunteering at the Foodbank, hosting the Singing Lions from University Park, attending Admirals and Tides games, and of course cheering on the Nittany Lion football team at TV tailgates around Hampton Roads and at Beaver Stadium for Homecoming. How exciting is it to have received an award for our winning homecoming entry! All those activities and more earned our chapter a second Elm (top) level designation from the Alumni Association. It takes energy to offer activities yearround and I thank you all for being part of it. The board has been meeting regularly throughout the year to keep up with Chapter business and keep our Chapter growing and running efficiently. I am so grateful for their teamwork and dedication to our Chapter. I look forward to spending a little time with our board at a local restaurant each month, planning upcoming events and projects for our members. I d love to see you there too. Please come share your ideas, energy and passion for PSU! Webmaster - Rich Freet Student Care Packages We packed and shipped an average 60 student care packages each for both last Spring & Fall semesters to local students who attend one of the Penn State campuses. It s a pricey but important chapter tradition. In 2016, we started a new opportunity for alumni. For just $10, alumni could sponsor a care package. In its first year, we had 38 care package sponsors. What better way to support our students and help defray costs! Go to psuhr.org or mail a check to Don McCall, Treas., 1817 Champion Circle Virginia Beach, VA Abby O. 17 received her care package and sent her thanks & a selfie! 6 Winter psuhr.org TV Tailgates Record-breaking crowds attended our TV tailgates in often with crowds on both sides of the water where Bayhaven Grille in Yorktown & Shorebreak Pizza in Va. Beach welcomed us. Watching with alumni & friends is best! (Photo taken during the B1G Championship at Shorebreak.) Thank you for providing me the opportunity to represent the PSU Hampton Roads Chapter through academics and leadership at Penn State, she wrote in a thank-you letter to the chapter. Alumni Admissions Committee Volunteers Six college fairs in six cities! Organizers added two new fairs in the fall of 16. Our 14 volunteers stepped up and staffed all six; some attended more than one. Part of our alumni mission is to help spread the word about Penn State to potential students. We do that by attending a training session and then help out in some or all -or even just one- of the following: represent PSU at area college fairs on the Peninsula and the Southside, follow-up with admitted students, send students invitations to the picnic, create gift bags and celebrate at the picnic with those who enroll. Contact AAC Chairman Scott Guirlinger on facebook or scott.guirlinger@gmail.com 6 6
7 Community Service at the Foodbank In February, we volunteered at the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and packed backpacks containing staples for needy elementary schoolchildren. We made nearly 1,000 backpacks for the students to take home on weekends. We also checked and sorted donated food items. Penn State alum and Foodbank COO Renee Figurelle says the backpack items and food we sorted for local food canteens and pantries would make an estimated 5,800 meals. Awards and Honors We received the award for best out-of-state entry in the 16 homecoming parade. FYI, it came with a $500 award! For the second time, the chapter was designated an Elm (highest) Level group of distinction. Congratulations to all those who helped us reach the point where, because of all we do for alumni, students and the community, we have been named one of the nation s top PSU alumni chapters for the 2 nd time! It was quite an honor to have a Hampton Roads chapter photo selected to be featured in the 2017 Alumni Association calendar! Join us Saturday February 18, 2017! 8:45 am- 12 pm. The Foodbank requires registration on foodbankonline.org in advance. Limited spaces- so hurry to register! Click on this link- Foodbank Online Sign In to volunteer! Questions?
