3 Tracks Symposium Faculty Richard A. Sheff, MD Lisa Eddy, RN, CPHQ Chairman and Senior Consultant for Executive Director, Accreditation General Session Topics The Future of Healthcare: The Quest for Value for all Americans Ian Morrison, PhD Author, Consultant and Futurist Healthcare reform is rising again on the political agenda as the combination of growing numbers of uninsured citizens and rising healthcare costs challenge payers and providers alike. The healthcare system continues to struggle in its search for affordable solutions that deliver value. Managed care faltered as it came under increasing scrutiny by the media, the consumer, and the regulators. Meanwhile, healthcare costs are rising, and the burden is increasingly being shifted to consumers. Large-scale vertical integration in healthcare has not taken place; rather, we have seen massive horizontal consolidation of pharmaceutical companies, health plans, hospital systems, and, to a lesser extent physician groups. Increased consumerism, amplified by the Internet, and new benefit designs creates new opportunities and new challenges. The industry is looking for a new direction and a new vision, but often falls prey to fads, as organizations are stretched thin by the roller coaster of change in management philosophy, reimbursement, and medical technology. This presentation will focus on the political, economic, and strategic context of change in healthcare and examine how various companies and institutions are preparing for the future. It will focus on the quest for value in healthcare by payers (both public and private), health plans, and consumers and how healthcare providers will respond. It will identify the leadership challenges and opportunities that lie ahead and will provide strategic insights about how organizations and individuals can flourish in the new millennium in healthcare. Albert L. Fritz, MHA Vice President, Robert J. Marder, MD Vice President, Carol S. Cairns, CPMSM, CPCS Senior Consultant for Credentialing and Privileging, William Cors, MD, MMM, FACPE Senior Consultant for Medical Staff Bud Pate Practice Director of West Coast Operations, Mary Hoppa, MD Senior Consultant for Medical Staff and Credentialing and Privileging Kurt Patton, MS Senior Consultant Mark A. Smith, MD, MBA, FACS Practice Director, Credentialing and Privileging Donna Goestenkors CPMSM Consultant for Credentialing and Privileging Sally Pelletier, CPMSM, CPCS Consultant for Credentialing and Privileging, Strategies for a Mixed-Model Medical Staff Richard A. Sheff, MD Chairman and Executive Director, Since one size won t fit all for physicians or hospitals, how can hospitals navigate through multiple, simultaneous models of physician-hospital relations for a successful future? The old social contract between physicians and hospitals is unraveling. In its place today, we find a myriad of new and evolving relationships between physicians and hospitals: physician-hospital competition; joint ventures; exclusive contracts, and pay for call. We also see the resurgence of physician employment and paid medical directorships, as well as the persistence of a self-governed medical staff. These factors are all part of the landscape that governing boards, CEOs, and physician leaders must navigate today. During this fast-moving, interactive session, Dr. Sheff will lead participants through mapping a course for their hospitals and physicians to manage the very real challenges they face in physicianhospital relations challenges which are mission-critical for the success of their hospitals. Special Keynote Speaker Ian Morrison, PhD, Author, Consultant and Futurist The Future of Healthcare: The Quest for Value for all Americans Ian Morrison is an internationally known author, consultant, and futurist specializing in long-term forecasting and planning with an emphasis on healthcare and the changing business environment.
