2 Purpose of the role : To provide individual and multidisciplinary psychology assessments and intervention for children and young people with a strong focus on child-centred, family focused practice To support parents of children who require psychological needs To function as part of the multi-disciplinary child health team in providing high quality clinical advice To be involved in quality improvement initiatives within the team Quality Assurance Approaches are culturally appropriate, in accordance with professional standards and ethics and organisational policy and procedures Works from a collaborative model with client and informed consent is evident Works within a multi-disciplinary team model to maximise treatment efficacy Works to identify potential risk and completes risk assessment if indicated Caseloads are managed in accordance with service requirements Develop sound psychological formulations, including risk formulations, based on thorough assessment, responding to referral questions, and providing treatment planning and recommendations as appropriate. Conduct psychological testing procedures as appropriate to allow clarification of issues and to assist with treatment planning. Provide formal psychological assessment reports and psychological testing reports according to standard and within timeframes Provide interventions including individual therapy, therapeutic groups, family therapy, and behavioural management. Review and evaluate effectiveness of psychological interventions. Maintain clinical records with appropriate documentation in patient files Ongoing notes reflect treatment planning, presentation and progress towards goals Effectively communicate assessments and plans with other clinicians involved in the child s care Waitemata District Health Board -JOB DESCRIPTION Clinical/Health Psychologist Page 2
3 To provide support for parents/caregivers within the context of a multi-disciplinary team To work, under supervision, with clients posing complex issues To be an active member of the multidisciplinary child rehabilitation team Professional accountability Work collaboratively with key staff, (including social work staff), to provide individual support, advice and direction as required Assessment and treatment procedures are theoretically and empirically sound and reflect an understanding of cultural and minority issues Risk assessment, formulation and plans are documented Care and protection issues are managed in accordance with WDHB policy Presents the psychological perspective in the team Provides clinical advice and constructive feedback to other staff on psychological issues Is accessible to child rehabilitation team members and responsive to their inquiries regarding children with psychological needs Complies with child health service and organisational policies and procedures Promotes inter-professional practice and collaboration designed to best meet the needs of patients and optimise the patient journey Maintain required psychologist competencies and professionally competent practice in accordance with the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act (2003). Adhere to the Core Competencies for the Practice of Psychology in New Zealand by the NZ Psychologists Board Engage in continuing professional development in relevant areas to ensure the standards of evidence based practice are upheld. Comply with the Code of Ethics for Psychologists Working in Aotearoa New Zealand (2002) Apply the NZ psychologists Boards, best practise guidelines where relevant Adhere to the policies and procedures of WDHB Maintain all relevant legislative requirements, including those expressed through the Health and Disability Commissioner, the Code of Health and Disability Services Consumers Rights and the Privacy Act (1993) and other relevant legislation including the Mental Health Act (1992). Follow best practice principles based on the least restrictive interventions and informed by evaluation and research Conduct oneself in a professional manner at all times. 4 Actively contributes to the development of psychology services within child rehabilitation service Maintains appropriate links with Mental Health Services Takes responsibility for own ongoing professional development Proactively participate in own performance development and review. Identifies areas for quality improvement and service development within child health and contributes to planning and implementation of initiatives in partnership with key stakeholders Acts as a resource for the team and contributes to colleagues knowledge base through presentations and/or sharing of literature and resources Contributes to the development of evidence based best practice standards for the client groups seen by the service Maintains current knowledge of key professional and organisational policies both internal and external to Waitemata DHB Contributes to discipline specific outcome measurement Undertakes research as a mutually agreed objective Publishes research findings and/or presents at appropriate conferences as a mutually agreed objective Service boundaries between Child Health and Child and Adolescent Mental health services are understood Professional links are maintained with professional and clinical leaders Opportunities for joint service initiatives are explored and developed for the benefit of the service and consumers Adult mental health services are engaged for at risk parents, where the scope is outside of the child health team Identifies own learning needs in consultation with supervisor and plans accordingly Uses professional development opportunities to maintain competence and improvement of own skills base Participates in own performance planning and review Adds to knowledge base through presentations and/or sharing of literature and resources Takes part in quality improvement processes or initiatives for the discipline Maintains connection to the WDHB wide Psychology professional network and meetings.
