VBEMS Operations OSCAR Online Scheduling System The OSCAR Online Scheduling System Duty Requests are due by the 10 th of the preceding month. Submit your Duty Requests on By Christi Budy Captain Are you documenting your procedures? Make sure that you are listing all of the procedures that you perform for your patient in the EMR. Choices include wound care, splinting, BVM, oral/nasal airways, LBB, suction, KED, time of extrication, CPR, intubation, IV and many, many more items. Remember that skills and procedures completed by engine crews should also be included here. The section where you can list things prior to arrival is for bystanders and police. A good rule of thumb is if the person is listed in the EMR (fire and EMS), the skill they perform should be listed in the detailed procedure section with the time, size, location, etc. Page 4 of 39

VBGH Has New Inpatient Unit On December 16, Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital opened a 24 bed inpatient psychiatric unit. This does not change any procedures in the field but with more psych beds available locally, hopefully this means patients will spend less time in the ED. Submitted By Christi Budy Captain EMR Tip---Oxygen and Normal Saline Any time you administer oxygen, normal saline (bolus or flush) or any other medication; you must document them in the medication section. Please don t forget to add these to the list when documenting so we know who, when, how much and where they were given. Submitted By Christi Budy Captain Page 5 of 39

VBEMS Administration ASK THE CHIEF (Andrew Lane and Jackie Reith from station 4 with Chief Edwards) Askthechief@vbgov.com. The purpose of this communication path is to give you an unrestricted communication path to me. It is designed to increase general communications and provide a pathway to connect with the EMS Chief. It is more important now than ever to ensure open lines of communication. You have many excellent ideas and a drive and motivation to make us even better and I want to hear these directly from you. Submitted items that serve the Department as a whole will be shared in our Department Newsletter, published once a month. Direct responses will be provided to members who include their address. I value each one of you and the quality service you provide. Keep up the great work! Bruce W. Edwards EMS Chief Save the date! By Bill Kiley Deputy Chief A request was made in our January Town Hall meeting, that EMS create a leadership course specifically designed and offered to Virginia Beach EMS personnel to help in gathering those skill sets necessary to advance to the level of Squad Commander or perhaps Brigade Chief. Therefore, we ask you to save the date, of the day of Saturday January 11, 2014 from 08:30 17:30. This Saturday day class will go over the leadership strategies and organization philosophy of the Department to make you a better leader. All current and potential leaders are welcome. Page 6 of 39

Submitted By Ruby Christian Contract Specialist Reduce the Risk of Home Fires during the Holidays During the holiday season, don t be too busy to be safe! Reduce the risk of home fires by following these important safety tips: Holiday Trees Do not use candles on or near the tree. Place the tree away from heat sources such as fireplaces and heaters. If you have a live tree, keep it in a sturdy base filled with water. Check the water level every day. Safely dispose of your tree before it becomes dangerously dry. Never burn the tree or tree parts in your fireplace. Holiday Lights Use UL approved lights. Examine all indoor and outdoor lights for frayed cords and replace if necessary. Lights should not touch combustible materials. "Indoor" lights should never be used outdoors. Avoid using extension cords, but if you do, follow instructions carefully. Do not overload electrical circuits such as wall outlets and extension cords. Use a circuit strip. Holiday Gift Wrap Keep papers, bows and trims away from heat sources such as fireplaces, space heaters, radiators, etc. Never burn gift wrappings in your fireplace. Fireplaces and Wood Stoves Have chimney or wood stove inspected and cleaned by a certified chimney specialist. Leave glass doors open while burning a fire to prevent creosote buildup. Install a stovepipe thermometer to help monitor flue temperature. Prepared by the Virginia Department of Emergency Management, December 2013 (804) pio@vdem.virginia.gov Page 37 of 39

Submitted By Carrie Lavelle Executive Assistant While you are out shopping, treat yourself to energy savings! This attachment will help you analyze power strip that can save you money! These days, most homes have multiple TVs and computers, all connected to various devices such as DVD players, game consoles, external monitors, and printers. While these cool electronics are packed with features that entertain us or help us be more productive, the energy consumed by all these gadgets in our homes can add up to nearly 10% of a household's monthly electric bill! The problem is that many people forget to turn off their devices when they aren't using them, and many electronics even continue to draw power after they've been turned off, wasting energy in the form of "vampire loads." There is a convenient and low-cost solution. Replacing your conventional power strips with advanced power strips (APS) can help reduce the electricity wasted when these devices are idle, without your having to change the way you normally use your electronics. APS are designed primarily for home entertainment centers and home office areas where there are typically many consumer electronics plugged into a power strip, and they work by preventing electronics from drawing power when they are off or not being used. There are a variety of different types of APS to fit different people's needs. For example, if you often fall asleep when watching TV at night, an activity monitor APS can turn everything off for you. Or, if you are always diligent about turning all your electronics off when you aren't using them but are concerned about the lingering vampire power draw, a masterless APS can make sure that everything is completely off.
