2 National Scout Active Support Units National Scout Active Support Units are open to adult volunteers over the age of 18 and is a way for them to volunteer time to Scouting in a flexible way that suits them. There is no requirement to have been involved in Scouting before joining a national Scout Active Support Unit (SASU). All that is required is a willingness to volunteer some time to support Scouting. Examples of National SASUs include Deep Sea Scouts, FLAGs (a SASU supporting Lesbians and Gays in Scouting) and the National Catholic Scout Fellowship as well as many others. The Roles We are looking for a volunteer Manager and a volunteer Deputy Manager to lead the National Scout Active Support Units as their Responsible Commissioner. Role share applications or applications from those wanting to undertake the role in a flexible manner are welcome. These are national roles and primarily will involve supporting and developing our national SASUs to ensure that their purpose and direction are clearly defined and that they are accomplishing their targets. You will work with the Units on the completion of their service agreement and as necessary act as a Unit manager in the absence of a Unit Manager. Can effectively manage and support adult volunteers Is an effective communicator Takes a proactive approach Is committed to supporting the Fundamentals and Vision of The Scout Association Is committed to supporting the aims and objectives of National Scout Active Support Units. 3 Role description for the Manager Scout Active Support Title: Outline: Responsible to: Responsible for: Main Contacts: Main Tasks: Manager Scout Active Support To act as the responsible Commissioner for all National Scout Active Support Units (excluding Activity, International, Programme and National Centres National SASUs) UK Commissioner (Adult Support) All National Scout Active Support Unit Managers (excluding Activity, International, Programme and National Centres National SASUs) National Scout Active Support Unit Managers, Members National Scout Active Support Units, Chief and Deputy Chief Commissioners, UK Commissioner (Adult Support), members of the Adult Support Core Team, members of Adult Support Project Teams and headquarters staff especially Adult Support staff and the Regional Development Service. To act as the Responsible Commissioner for National Scout Active Support Units excluding Activity, International, Programme and National Centres National SASUs. To act as the line manager for all National Scout Active Support Unit Managers excluding Activity, International, Programme and National Centres National SASUs, ensuring that they have access to the appropriate training and support. To review and agree as appropriate all proposals for the creation of new National Scout Active Support Units excluding Activity, International, Programme and National Centres National SASUs. In consultation with the relevant Scout Active Support Unit Manager and members of the Unit to consider, revise and formally approve the Service Agreement as necessary. In partnership with the relevant Scout Active Support Unit Manager to review Service Agreements on an annual basis. Act as an interim Unit Manager in the absence of a person holding that appointment. To organise & facilitate an annual meeting of all National Scout Active Support Units Ensure the maintenance of effective liaison between headquarters (staff members & volunteers) and National Scout Active Support Units.
4 Support the strategic planning of the Adult Support Core Team on Scout Active Support related matters. Support the work of relevant Adult Support Project Teams as agreed by the Adult Support Core Team. If required, contribute to national policy developments across the range of TSA activities. As required, contribute to national meetings. Represent The Scout Association at public and Scouting events. Any other tasks as agreed with the UK Commissioner for Adult Support. Person Specification Knowledge and experience /Desirable Ability to manage adults effectively Experience of managing dispersed teams Experience of mentoring and developing others Experience of Scouting as an adult Experience of Scout Active Support Units Desirable Skills /Desirable Excellent written and oral communication skills Provide advice and guidance effectively to others Provide effective leadership for national Scout Active Support Units Build, maintain and facilitate effective working relationships with a wide range of people Ability to work with and balance the needs of various stakeholders Ability to develop an effective team Plan, manage and monitor own tasks and time
