1 City Year Project Evaluation Brief 1. About the National Gallery The National Gallery houses the national collection of paintings in the Western European tradition from the 13th to the 19th centuries. The Gallery's aim is to care for the collection, to enhance it for future generations, primarily by acquisition, and to study it, while encouraging access to the pictures for the education and enjoyment of the widest possible public now and in the future. The National Gallery s vision is to establish a central role for paintings in modern cultural life. 2. The City Year Project City Year is a charity which challenges year old students from diverse backgrounds to spend a year as City Year Volunteer Mentors. The mentors are placed in schools where they support students who face challenging circumstances to enjoy and succeed at school by acting as a near peer role model. For the last three years The National Gallery has worked in partnership with City Year to deliver an innovative arts project, engaging school students who would not usually visit the Gallery and might not otherwise consider the relevance of the collection to their own lives. The aims of the project are: To encourage young people to make links between the collection and their own lives. To develop skills and knowledge by looking at and talking about paintings. To develop and improve motivation, confidence, self-esteem and social skills. To raise the profile of the National Gallery s programmes for schools and teachers in nonattending schools. Gallery educators train and support City Year mentors to plan and deliver creative sessions in their school and encourage students to connect with and take inspiration from the collection. Students participate in Gallery-based and school-based workshops to create their own art work. At the end of the project participants present their work and discuss the paintings which inspired them in a celebratory event hosted by the Gallery. You can watch a film about the project here:

2 This year, 10 mentors placed in 5 schools will participate in the project. They will aim to recruit up to 10 students from each school. 3. Project Timeline September 2017: Schools identified by City Year November 2017: Teacher and Mentor Introduction to the Project City Year Mentors and teachers will be introduced to the project, its aims and expectations. They will be introduced to the collection, including the paintings they will use as catalysts for inspiration and creativity. Participants will be supported in exploring different approaches and techniques that can be used to engage their students with the selected paintings. This session further aims to open up dialogue between teachers and mentors about what the project will mean for their school. November - December 2017: Student Introduction to the Project National Gallery Programmer for Schools and Teachers will visit each participating school to outline the project to prospective students. This could include a brief activity taster activity. December 2017: Gallery Visit 1 Mentors will return to the gallery to work with gallery educators to further explore the collection and collaboratively develop a project for their students. It will also provide an opportunity to understand the needs of the students and anticipate additional needs or specific approaches. January 2018: Mentor Led Introduction to the Project Volunteer mentors will brief their students on the project and run a short activity based on one of their chosen focus paintings.

3 February 2018: Gallery Visit 2 and Outreach Visit Teachers and mentors will return to the gallery with their students giving an opportunity to share their responses to selected paintings from the collection. This exploration will take place in the gallery and will be extended into the workshop spaces. Mentors will run clubs or timetabled enrichment activities in their schools creating work inspired by the students visit to the gallery. Gallery Educators will assist by providing a project plan and by visiting each participating school. March 2018: Gallery Visit 3 Teachers, mentors and students return to the gallery to work with the artists to complete their projects. April 2018: Take Over Day at The National Gallery Students Take Over Day, where both pupils and mentors showcase their work and speak about the paintings that they were inspired by. Teachers, mentors, parent/guardians and siblings are all invited to attend. 4. Project Evaluation Purpose of The Evaluation To evaluate whether the programme goals have been met To inform the future planning and structure of the City Year project To inform the creation of similar partnership projects To assist advocacy for future similar projects both inside and outside the organisation The final report should include: an executive summary; an introduction with contextual information; a description of the methodology for collecting data; key findings and discussion of the main issues; conclusions and recommendations for future projects.

4 Requirements We are looking for someone to evaluate the City Year Project The evaluator will have: Experience of evaluating projects with young people. Experience of developing successful evaluation frameworks and collecting and analysing a range of different types of data. Excellent written and communication skills and the confidence to engage effectively with a wide range of different people. An excellent understanding of equality and diversity, including treating all those you come into contact with courtesy and respect irrespective of background. Tender Process Please submit an evaluation proposal which includes: 1. A project plan and timeline 2. A breakdown of the budget 3. A detailed description and rationale for the chosen methodology 4. Examples of previous work 5. Two references 6. Information on project team and their individual roles and responsibilities Suggested Evaluation Project Timetable November January Initial contact with teachers and mentors to provide base line information February March 1018 Evaluation of key elements of the project ie on site workshops, school based sessions April May 2018 post project evaluation

5 June 2018 delivery of the final written report Budget The estimated budget for the work is 6,000 but is open for discussion.
