More than 400 students from districts across El Paso came out from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday to relax, have fun, learn a little bit about different careers within the military, and get recognized for their effort throughout the school year. The purpose of the event was not only to recognize honor roll students, but also to recognize students that have excelled or overcome obstacles and personal challenges. The event was supported by the Fort Bliss Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation Department, Peter Piper Pizza, Whataburger, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, the Fort Bliss Recycling Center, Border Patrol and the Fort Bliss Fire Department. The day kicked off with students circulating through stations set up to allow them to experience and talk with professionals in different career fields. Next, the students from each school were called on stage to be recognized by Col. Mike Hester, Fort Bliss Garrison commander, and Command Sgt. Maj. Brian Holschbach, Fort Bliss Garrison command sergeant major. This is one of those great community partnership projects that makes you feel good about being a trooper, and all the support we give the kids, Hester said. This was designed to award and recognize the hard working kids. After the formal portion of the event was done, the students spent the rest of the afternoon enjoying the outdoors, inflatables and the Biggs Park playground. Nine years ago this event started with less than a 120 students. We used to do this at the Stanton Theater, with popcorn and a movie, said Patricia Lopez, School Liaison Officer and the event coordinator. Now we have grown to over 400 students. Graciela Rodriguez, of Parkland Pre-K, in the Ysleta Independent School District, was one of the students the event recognized. I think I did perfect, and I m a terrific kid, Rodriguez said. The students are nominated by their respective campuses, acknowledging their extraordinary efforts during the school year.

Photos by Wendy Brown / Fort Bliss Managing Editor Easton Atchison, 10 months, chases after a ball in the pool with his mother, Marie Atchison, during the Parent and Baby Swim Lessons at the Aquatics Training Center here Saturday. Parent and Baby Swim Lessons prepare babies for water By Wendy Brown Fort Bliss Managing Editor By week eight of the Parent and Baby Swim Lessons at the Aquatics Training Center here, the babies in the pool swimming round and round (with their parents), were all smiles and happiness. It wasn t always that way, however. Emily Nave, who participated in Saturday s class with her daughter Elaine, 16 months, said Elaine started the class as a screamer. Now we re very happy in the water, Nave said. We ve learned to go underwater and we ve learned to kind of go back and forth and up and down and floating. Our big thing is crawling out of the pool and getting up onto the edge and turning around, waiting, and listening to instructions. Andres Ibarra, a lifeguard, swim instructor and water survival instructor at the facility, warmed everyone up for Saturday s class with a song called The Babies in the Pool, sung to the tune of The Wheels in the Bus (go round and round). The lyrics instructed the parents to move the babies up and down or side to side, for example. Nave s experience sums up the goal of the class, Ibarra said. The most important part about this class is that it gets both the babies and the parents comfortable with water situations, Ibarra said. A lot of times, either for the parent s reason or the baby s, they fear getting in the water and the main purpose of this is to get them comfortable so then when they re old enough to take the preschool classes they re not scared. The class also helps with water safety, Ibarra said. Not only do the babies learn how to grab onto the wall of the pool, they also learn how to crawl out, Ibarra said. The classes teach babies to listen to instructions as well, Ibarra said. We teach the babies that it s only OK to go in when the parent says it s OK to go in, he said. In addition to songs, the classes incorporate toys, balls and foam pool noodles so the babies have fun while they re learning, Ibarra said. We make it as entertaining as possible for the babies, because that s the only way they re going to remember, Ibarra said. Marie Atchison, who attended the class with her son Easton, 10 months, said the toys were her son s favorite part of the class. After taking the class for eight weeks, Atchison said she is glad she signed up. We really liked it, she said. It was good to get him used to the water. Tony Benjamin, who participated in the class with his son Devalon, 17 months, said he hopes to take the class for another eight-week cycle. The class was great, he said. (Devalon) enjoyed himself a lot. I wanted to introduce him to the water, and I think he likes it a lot. Parents can sign their babies up for the class multiple times, Ibarra said. The class accepts children ages 6 months through 3 years and there are 12 slots per class. The next cycle of classes starts Saturday, but ATC officials said the classes fill up so quickly, it is likely the next available registration date for the classes will be July 17 for the classes that run July 22 through Sept. 9. ATC officials hope to expand the number of classes soon, Ibarra said. For more information, call Stephen Black, 18 months, laughs as his father, Aaron Black, emerges from the water. Devalon Benjamin, 17 months, claps after successfully going under water here Saturday. Tony Benjamin, his father, looks on. Easton Atchison, 10 months, smiles at his mother, Marie Atchison, during the Parent and Baby Swim Lessons at the Aquatics Training Center here Saturday.

7 FORT BLISS BUGLE May 25, B Military Family and Veterans Prevention Program ready to help situations. School and medical transportation, activities and recreation are available. MFVPP encourages parents and agencies to come out and tour the facility. Despite their unique lifestyle, military members face many common civilian issues: financial instability and inability to provide basic necessities. The MFVPP can assist with these issues. The center can provide basic needs (i.e. clothing, hygiene etc.) for the entire family. The CCCEP operates the Discovery Thrift Shop, a donation-based thrift store which provides clothing, shoes or basic household items to families in need at no cost. Basic needs may be provided every few months on a case-by-case basis, for qualifying families. The MFVPP has an established partnership with the Fort Bliss Garrison and Army Community Service. The MFVPP was granted permission to work with Fort Bliss and, in particular, the Family Advocacy Program. These relationships have created partnerships that, together, are committed to fight against child abuse and neglect by providing the tools and skills necessary to build and strengthen the military family. All of our services are free and confidential. We do not communicate personal information to command, medical or any other military or civilian agencies without express written consent from the family. At the conclusion of our first year, we have served 95 families. From parenting classes to case management, the MFVPP is focused on strengthening military families in their most trying times and building lasting relationships one family at a time. The program is located at the Child Crisis Center of El Paso, 2100 N. Stevens. Cabela s shows commitment to the men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces by providing meaningful, challenging career opportunities where military skills and experience may be applied. Military family life presents many unique challenges: deployments, trainings and distance from family. The Military Family and Veterans Prevention Program knows personally about these challenges. The Child Crisis Center of El Paso program is comprised of military spouses and veterans who can relate to the military lifestyle and culture firsthand. It was designed to bring awareness to these challenges and assists families in the military and those who are retired or discharged. Active-duty service members, veterans, retirees, spouses and their children up to 17 years old are eligible for services, regardless of branch, National Guard or Reserve status or discharge designation. One of the core pieces of the military program is parenting education, Systematic Training for Effective Parenting. This evidence-based training curriculum is a seven-week course that lasts for approximately one hour. The instructor coordinates with individuals, units and agencies around Fort Bliss to provide classes in convenient locations. Some of the topics include understanding yourself and child, beliefs and feelings, encouragement, discipline and more. These group classes build relationships with other parents and stress positive parenting techniques. The educator emphasizes the military lifestyle and how it affects family dynamics. Participants who are facing crises are eligible to utilize the CCCEP emergency shelter. While everyone has differing definitions of crises, military-specific examples could be field-training exercises, hospitalization or family care plan failure. Shelter staff are experienced in working with children of all backgrounds and understand children s COMMERCIAL CLASSIFIEDS All real estate advertised in this newspaper is subject to the Federal Fair Housing Act of 1968, which makes it illegal to advertise any preference, limitation or discrimination based on race, color, religion or national origin, or any intention to make such preference, limitation or discrimination.the Bugle will not accept any advertisement for real estate which is in violation of the law.
