Derrick Stevenson INFANTRY SOLDIERS PREPFOR EIB Prestige, invaluable training comes with earning the badge Story and photos by Wendy Brown / Fort Bliss Garrison Public Affairs It took Sgt. 1st Class Robert Madison three tries before he earned his Expert Infantryman Badge in 2002, and now that he is a grader for the test, he has some sage advice for Soldiers hoping to pin on the prestigious badge. I failed many times, said Madison, assigned to 4th Battalion, 17th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division. Just keep trying. You re going to succeed. It s determination If you want it bad enough, you can get it, just like anything else. Madison was the noncommissioned officer in charge of the MK 19 grenade launcher station as roughly 1,000 infantry Soldiers gathered at the Forward Operating Base Endeavor training area at Fort Bliss Friday to train for the EIB testing that will begin here Monday. The training continues this week. Sgt. Maj. Jimmy Allen, operations sergeant major, 4th Bn., 17th Inf. Regt., 1st BCT, 1st AD, said the training gives Soldiers a chance to hone their skills on the 30 stations they will face during the test. The stations range from weapons lanes to medical lanes to patrol lanes and more. The test will also include an Army Physical Fitness Test, a 12-mile foot march and day and night land navigation. They get evaluated on every task and they must get a go on every station, Allen said. They can get no-gos, but they have to go back and retest and get a go. So on their third no-go they can t get their EIB. Usually, only 5 to 8 percent of candidates receive their EIB after the test, Allen said. The testing and training, however, are beneficial for all Soldiers who try to earn the EIB, Allen said. Soldiers need to learn their Skill Level One tasks, such as call for fire, Allen said. It helps the unit out that this is a big event. It trains everybody, so they don t have to do an event that would do the same thing. All their training that they conduct every year can be done at this site. So when they go to the field and they can start doing squad and platoon live fires, the Soldiers actually understand what they need to do when they re out there. Staff Sgt. Derrick Stevenson, NCOIC of the request medical evacuation station Friday, said the training refreshes important skills all Soldiers need to know. Every Soldier, from the newest private to the most senior Soldier, needs to be able to send up a medevac as soon as possible, so this is one of those things where it s not dependent on the sergeant to understand everything; everybody must know how to do this, Stevenson said. Spc. Calvin Brown, assigned to 4th Bn., 17th Inf. Regt., 1st BCT, 1st AD, said he appreciates all the help Soldiers who had earned the EIB were giving to those who had not yet earned the badge. This is my first attempt at the EIB, Brown said, and hopefully it s my last as well. Brown said he expects some of the weapons systems he doesn t use often to challenge him, but he was grateful for the opportunity to practice before the test and learn as much as possible. He acknowledges he is going to have to study hard. It s as much as you put into it, Brown said.

2 10A February 1, 2018 FORT BLISS BUGLE Back to the future: Regiment introduces laser engagement system to BCT cycle By Wallace McBride Fort Jackson (S.C.) Leader FORT JACKSON, S.C. Even today, two decades into the 21st century, the multiple integrated laser engagement system, or MILES, still sounds like a gadget out of Star Trek. The gear uses lasers and blank cartridges to simulate actual battle, giving Soldiers and trainees the kind of instant feedback usually reserved for video games. The weapons recoil when fired, the smell of gunpowder hanging in the air is palpable, and the electronic tones that track simulated gunfire provide a sense of immediacy that might otherwise be missing from standard buddy training maneuvers. MILES is hardly a new concept, though. The system was introduced to Army during the late 1970s, years before the Soldiers now in training at Fort Jackson were even born. The system s popularity in Army training centers has been subject to the usual kinds of external influences that affect all military training, with its stock recently rising on post courtesy of new training initiatives driven by Fort Jackson and Army Training Center commander, Maj. Gen. Pete Johnson. MILES is a good tool, said 1st Lt. Adam Pastor, executive officer for Company B, 4th Battalion, 39th Infantry Regiment, whose trainees put the gear back into use on the morning of Jan. 18. It s a strange sign of the times that gun-mounted lasers almost represent a back-to-basics approach for training, but Pastor said the trainees in their eighth week of Basic Combat Training were undaunted by either the technical challenge of the enhanced weapons, or by the frigid temperatures that had threatened to hamper operations on the installation all week. They re cold, but they re motivated, Pastor said. Once (the trainees) see a couple of runs and see what they ve supposed to be doing, they ll grab hold and execute well. MILES is designed to replicate both the firing capabilities and effects of weapons during simulated combat. The gear can detect hits from laser bullets and keep track of damage assessments for everyone involved. There are immediate audio cues to let trainees know when simulated rounds are coming close to their position. For those less fortunate, an ominous tone also lets them know when they ve been taken off the battlefield. Conceptually, the Army has these great ideas about how to make training better, he said. MILES is one of those training enhancers that will give Soldiers immediate feedback in the moment. The only way to really improve it is to use sim-rounds... you ll get hit by colored paint rounds. You ll feel the sting, too. Introducing MILES into the training cycle required drill sergeants to be trained to use the equipment, and then finding the more appropriate forum for its use. The company settled on using the equipment in a Buddy Team Fire and Maneuver Exercise, said Sgt 1st Class Ramsey Street, senior drill sergeant for Company B, 4th Battalion, 39th Infantry Regiment. They re going to move in buddy teams and bound up to the end of the lane, Street said. Both his weapon and uniform are equipped with MILES, which detects hits from laser bullets and keeps track of damage assessments for everyone involved. to find their own cover. At the end of the lane were adversary Soldiers firing MILES-equipped weapons at them as they advanced. Their abilities to return fire and find cover would be tested quickly. Each trainee took turns laying down suppressive fire while their battle buddy advanced on the enemy. Once the task was completed, another set of Soldiers fell into place behind them and took their turns running the challenge.

Maybe you lost your temper and started yelling, or maybe you shut down and hoped the other person knew what you wanted so you didn t have to come out and ask directly? Communication is a skill that not only builds connection with others, but is a skill we can develop with practice. There are three main ways we find ourselves communicating with others: aggressive, passive and assertive. Aggressive communication can be useful when we find ourselves or others in a high-stakes situation where our message needs to be communicated immediately, such as when your child is about to touch a hot stove. We communicate aggressively to save the child from injury. However, when we communicate in an aggressive manner, especially when we are upset or frustrated, we tend to close the conversation off from the other person and we unintentionally send the message to the other person that we don t care about their opinion or point of view. Passive communication also has a time and place. Sometimes, we may believe it is wrong to complain and find ourselves using the passive communication style. However, if it is critical to communicate our point of view, passive communication can hinder our ability to communicate what we need or what we are thinking, leaving us frustrated as we walk away from the conversation. Assertive communication is the only style of communication that builds connection by communicating in a clear, confident and controlled way. Assertive communication can be used to express your needs while also taking into account another s point of view. When we are assertive we believe our needs are important, communicate our message without exaggeration and regularly ensure others are tracking. Assertive communication seeks to express needs while also finding a solution that is useful for all involved. The IDEAL model is a great asset for using assertive communication. Before having a difficult discussion, first identify and understand the problem on your own time. When you approach the person, describe the problem objectively and accurately. When appropriate, express your concerns and how you feel. Ask about the other person s perspective and any reasonable changes. Finally, list the positive outcomes that will occur if the person makes the agreed upon change. Assertive communication is a skill you can develop. It will improve with practice even if it does not come naturally to you. Use the IDEAL model to help you maintain control and communicate in a clear and confident manner. It doesn t take an Einstein to know the Fort Bliss Bugle is the best way to advertise your business to reach the active and retired military and their families. Martinez is an outstanding Unit Prevention Leader. Sgt. Martinez leads from front as Unit Prevention Leader By Thomana Flores Fort Bliss ASAP Prevention Specialist Sgt. Tomas Martinez, assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 4th Battalion, 17th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, is an outstanding Unit Prevention Leader, and the Fort Bliss Army Substance Abuse Program would like to thank him for his hard work. Not only did Martinez do an outstanding job in supporting the mission of National Red Ribbon Week, he also exceeded expectations when participating in the monthly hands-on portion of the Unit Prevention Leaders course by dedicating time and support. The UPL course is a 40-hour class given monthly. During this time, service members learn about specimen collection, regulation, storage and shipment procedures. Being a UPL is an extra duty that does not come with promotion points. Despite this stipulation, UPLs have assisted in our ASAP family on several campaigns, projects and events. UPLs play a vital role in the commander s substance abuse prevention program. There are 700 UPLs on this installation and they conduct a variety of trainings. Martinez said he wanted to become a UPL because he believes interaction with service members is not only essential, but necessary when it comes to prevention issues. When I do trainings, I get a satisfaction out of being able to answer questions they may have, Martinez said. You have to have integrity to be a UPL because you always have to do the right thing at all times, in and out of uniform. Commands handpick UPLs, and they must lead from the front. On behalf of the program, we would like to thank Martinez, and all UPLs on this installation, for living by the Army values and assisting team ASAP in mandatory functions that benefit all service members. UPLs are responsible for giving the most up-to-date, relevant information through briefings about drug and alcohol trends at the unit or battalion level. In addition, UPLs track four hours of training annually that is required for every Soldier. Martinez does an excellent job of making sure Soldiers take this required training and he tests his unit at the required rate of 10 percent a month. Materials available to the UPLs to conduct training include pedal carts, beer goggles, informational drug and alcohol DVDs and marketing material. Martinez said he particularly likes training with the beer goggles. ASAP will be participating in Alcohol Awareness Month in April, and Martinez said he plans to support the effort. The Army Research Laboratory has developed a new partnership with Helius Medical Technologies to launch a research program focusing on a neuromodulation stimulator that could enhance cognitive and psychological readiness through mindfulness meditation training. Army advances PTSD, other cognitive research through latest partnership By ARL Public Affairs ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND, Md. The U.S. Army Research Laboratory and Helius Medical Technologies, Inc., from Newton, Pennsylvania, have partnered to expand on early research that could mean new interventions for improving Soldier readiness and resilience, as well as reducing symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD. As part of a cooperative research and development agreement, or CRADA, ARL and Helius are launching a research program to investigate Helius Portable Neuromodulation Stimulator for the enhancing cognitive and psychological readiness and response through mindfulness meditation training. Helius is focused on neurological wellness. Researchers from both organizations will combine the use of the neuromodulator with mindfulness meditation training and assess participants neurocognitive performance and self-reported symptoms before and after training. ARL is studying the use of mindfulnessbased stress reduction, or MBSR, and other forms of mindfulness meditation among Soldiers and veterans. ARL s Dr. Valerie Rice, chief of the Army Medical Department Field Element at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, said early research demonstrates that active duty service members and military veterans who complete MBSR training achieve results that positively affect a Soldier s readiness a top priority of Army Chief of Staff Gen. Mark A. Milley. Our research to date has focused on a sample of U.S. active duty service members and veterans, who are not necessarily patients, in order to determine whether meditation training might be helpful for our troops, Rice said. Our results have shown practical and clinically relevant reductions in PTSD symptoms, as measured by the PTSD Checklist Military Version. The studies have also shown that those who complete mindfulness training, whether taught in-person or online in a virtual world, achieve significant decreases in stress, anxiety, daytime sleepiness, pain, and symptoms of inattention associated with attention deficit disorder, as well as increased energy and vigor, she said. In addition, those who score higher in mindfulness show quicker decision making speed and fewer errors on sustained visual and auditory performance tasks, than those with lower mindfulness scores. ARL conducts a broad program of fundamental research focused on human sciences that identify and advance novel techniques and technologies that can improve cognitive, emotional and physical performance to provide new capabilities for maximizing Soldier readiness and response. The Soldier is the lynchpin for Army modernization, Rice said. Without a stable and competent Soldier, no amount of technology can improve warfighting capabilities. By coupling mindfulness meditation training with brain stimulation using this new portable simulator, we expect to see even greater gains in neurocognitive performance, retention of information, and reductions in personal stress and anxiety, than we have seen with mindfulness training alone. Research conducted at ARL s Fort Sam Houston site focuses on active duty service members and veterans, rather than specifically on patients, in an effort to determine how mindfulness meditation training might serve both populations in a preventative manner by increasing resilience, improving mission performance, and strengthening cognitive and emotional readiness. In addition, ARL is examining how mindfulness meditation training assists individuals who have symptoms of PTSD or anxiety associated with their military service. During mindfulness meditation, individuals learn to focus their attention first on what is occurring in the present moment, and as they gain skill in doing so, they can begin to focus their attention on what they choose to pay attention to, rather than having their mind jump from one topic to another. Through the meditation process, their mind begins to quiet and they also begin to see and understand their own motivations, communications, actions, and relationships more clearly, Rice said. They can then appropriately alter their approach in all aspects of their lives, in order to achieve their goals and the mission to which they are assigned. They can be fully present in whatever task or assignment they are given, without having their mind wander unnecessarily. Confidence and performance both improve under these conditions. Rice refers to this as developing internal situational awareness.
