Reconnaissance and planning pay off during battles. Leaders stressed this fact as they held an after-action review Soldiers assigned to Company B, 2nd Battalion, 198th Infantry Regiment after they successfully defended their position against the enemy in a simulated battle here Friday. Soldiers placed their M1A2 Abrams tanks and Bradley Fighting Vehicles in optimal defensive positions, largely due to the actions they took beforehand, leaders said. Next, the Mississippi Army National Guard Soldiers planned to take that knowledge and apply it to defending their position in a similar exercise later that night. (The training) helped them out a lot, said Sgt. 1st Class Richard Young, an observer, coach and trainer assigned to Team B, 2nd Battalion 351st Infantry Regiment, 177th Armored Brigade, Mississippi National Guard. It coaches them and gets them ready for their deployment that s coming. It provides oversight and insight for the mission. The 71 Soldiers who participated in the training exercise are among 4,000 Mississippi National Guard Soldiers at Fort Bliss getting ready for a deployment. They arrived in early March and are expected to stay through June, said Sgt. 1st Class Robert Frazier, public affairs noncommissioned officer in charge for the 177th Armored Brigade. Capt. Nathaniel Hetherman, officer in charge, Team B, 2nd Bn., 351st Inf. Regt., 177th Ar. Bde., said he and the other observer controllers are external evaluators who set up simulated battles for units such as the 2nd Bn., 198th Inf. Regt., and then evaluate their performance. After the mission is done, we go and conduct an afteraction review, Hetherman said. We talk about what they did well, areas that need improvement and then, based on performance, we recommend another iteration or if they have met all their objectives, we may move onto the next mission. In this case, the unit was ready to move onto the next mission defending at night. Staff Sgt. Robert Ruthven, a training NCO, master gunner and tank commander assigned to Co. B, 2nd Bn., 198th Inf. Regt., 155th Armored Brigade Combat Team, said each training step builds on the next. The day before, the company had practiced an attack, and Friday s mission taught the Soldiers how to follow through. We had a town that we assaulted last night and we were to push through and set up a defensive posture and prepare for a counter attack from the enemy, Ruthven said. Basically, coming in for this training today what it set us up for is success on down the road. Hetherman said that so far at Fort Bliss, Co. B has successfully completed crew-level gunnery on their tanks and Bradleys, shot engagements and qualified as crew. They have also completed platoon situational exercises and platoon live-fire exercises. Now we re at the point where they re done the platoon exercise and they re doing company level 14 or 15 vehicles working together at the same time, Hetherman said. Now we ll finish a live-fire called a (Combined Arms Live Fire Exercise). First Lt. Jeffrey Bryant, executive officer, Co. B, 2nd Bn., 198th Inf. Regt., 155th ABCT, said he appreciates the training because it helps him prepare for a variety of scenarios. It gives you an idea of what you can expect whenever you re going into different areas, Bryant said. DEFENDING THE POSITION (Background) Staff Sgt. 2 10A April 26, 2018 FORT BLISS BUGLE Top female cadet embraces challenges Looks forward to serving Infantry By Sean Kimmons Army News Service WEST POINT, N.Y. As a young girl, Cadet Taylor England daydreamed about being in the Infantry long before the Army opened all of its combat arms positions to females. She wanted to lead troops in combat, shoot weapons and execute missions aspirations similar to those of her male counterparts. I wanted to be the person out there doing those things, said England, 22, of South Lebanon, Ohio. I didn t want to sit back and relax. Cadet Taylor England Her drive and competitive spirit led her to be valedictorian at her high school and later to the U.S. Military Academy, where she is currently a regimental command sergeant major. She is also the top-ranked cadet out of 230 others who have branched Infantry. Rankings are based on a cadet s cumulative performance of military skills, physical training and academic standing. In her most recent PT test, she maxed out at 360 points on a 300-point scale. Her 2-mile run was clocked in at 13:09, just nine seconds shy from the men s fastest standard. I want to do a job and I want to do it well. It doesn t matter that I m a female, she said. I can do the same thing a guy can do. Sandhurst To broaden her leadership abilities, England volunteered to take charge of her company s team in the Sandhurst Military Skills Competition last year. The annual competition pits hundreds of cadets against each other in strenuous events over two days. While most cadets come from West Point, there are also teams from other Sean Kimmons / Army News Service Cadet Taylor England, center right, helps her teammates flip over a tractor tire during the Sandhurst Military Skills Competition at West Point, New York, April 14. England, the top-ranked cadet who is branching Infantry, plans to serve the 173rd Airborne Brigade when she completes the Infantry basic officer leader course. service academies and ROTC detachments at universities across the country as well as several nations. Her squad ended up placing in the middle of the 60-squad field. At this year s competition, which ended Saturday, she decided to go all in. She tried out and earned a spot on the Gold Team, which handpicks skilled competitors from across the academy. On a team of leaders, she had the opportunity to learn from others who were ambitious like her. Throughout the competition, she said, there were times when she leaned on her teammates and vice versa in order for them to conduct all 11 events in a timely matter. It definitely prepares you to be an Infantry officer because we re doing Infantry tactics, she said of Sandhurst. With the leading part, we all had to step up at different times and take the reins. We left it all out there. In his fourth Sandhurst competition, Cadet Eric Savini said England helped keep the team motivated when grueling tasks sapped the energy out of them. England is typically the first-line supervisor to Savini, who is a battalion command sergeant major in the Corps of Cadets. But because of his past knowledge of Sandhurst, he was chosen as the team s squad leader. He described England as a cadet who is hard to come by, who is physically fit and willing to put in the extra effort to get the job done. We have been friends for over a year now, said Savini, 22, of West Chester, Pennsylvania. It s good working her. While their squad failed to win this year s competition, it still had an impressive showing a fifth-place finish out of 64 teams. It also gave England and her squad a useful lesson on teamwork. Working together in a team-oriented (competition) is the best thing you can experience, England said afterward. At the end of the day, that s why I do it because of the people who I m. Italy bound England s time at West Point almost did not happen. Initially, she thought about attending the U.S. Naval Academy until her strong interest in land warfare eventually sunk that idea. I decided to come here, because I would rather be about leading people than a boat, she said, smiling. In her sophomore year, her interest in joining Infantry grew even more when Capt. Kristen Griest, who later became the Army s first female Infantry officer, visited the academy. It was 2015 and Griest, along 1st Lt. Shaye Haver, had just become the first woman to earn the coveted Ranger tab. A dozen women have now since graduated from the notoriously difficult Army Ranger School. In fiscal year 2016, for example, more than 4,000 personnel attended the school only 36 percent of them graduated, according to Army statistics. It definitely lifted your spirits, England recalled when both women passed the course. One day she hopes to add a Ranger tab to her uniform, which already has Army parachutist and air assault badges sewn onto it. If the opportunity to attend the course does come up, she said, it should not matter that she is a female. I don t like focusing on that, she said. Overall, you go out there and do what you need to do and if you re prepared, you ll get through it. Did You Know... 4 12A April 26, 2018 FORT BLISS BUGLE Army, Marine Corps stress importance of ground forces modernization By Lisa Fernando DOD News WASHINGTON Army and Marine Corps officials stressed to lawmakers April 18 the urgency in modernizing ground forces amid an increasingly challenging security environment. We are at an inflection point, and we can no longer afford to choose between nearterm readiness and modernization, Lt. Gen. John M. Murray, the Army s deputy chief of staff for programs, told the House Armed Services Committee s tactical air and land forces subcommittee. The development of new capabilities has been slowed, deferred, and in some cases, halted due to the Army s focus on the demands of ongoing campaigns, combined constrained resources and an Industrial Age organizational model, Murray said. Meanwhile, our adversaries have or are quickly attaining a competitive advantage, he said. Murray appeared before the panel Army Lt. Gen. Paul A. Ostrowski, military deputy to the assistant secretary of the Army for acquisition, logistics and technology; Marine Corps Lt. Gen. Robert S. Walsh, deputy commandant for combat development and integration and commanding general, Marine Corps Combat Development Command; and Marine Corps Brig. Gen. Joseph Shrader, commander of the Marine Corps Systems Command. Investments to restore military The Army and Marine Corps leaders welcomed lawmakers support for defense Sgt. 1st Class Jasmine L. Flowers / U.S. Army Soldiers from Task Force Stalwart, composed of Soldiers from 1st Battalion, 41st Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, pose for a group photo in Afghanistan, March 28. Army and Marine Corps officials stressed to lawmakers April 18 the urgency in modernizing ground forces amid an increasingly challenging security environment. spending, saying the president s fiscal year 2018 budget and the fiscal year 2019 budget request seek to restore the military after years of decline. The investments, they said, support the National Defense Strategy and aim to build a more lethal and agile force. The surest way to prevent war is to be prepared to win one under the most difficult of circumstances, the Marine generals said in their written statement, adding that this requires new operational concepts, an aggressive approach to force development and a consistent, multiyear investment to restore warfighting readiness. Modernization focus The Army, Murray said, plans in fiscal year 2019 to selectively upgrade equipment that is critical to near-term readiness and focus on areas crucial to combat. Those areas, he told the panel, include long-range precision fires, next generation combat vehicles, future vertical lift, the network, air missile defense and Soldier lethality. For the last several decades, the Army possessed overmatch based on its qualitative edge in capabilities, Murray and Ostrowski said in their written statement. It enabled our Army to defeat enemy formations, underpinned credible deterrence, and served as a critical pillar of joint force capabilities in all domains air, land, maritime, space, cyberspace and the electromagnetic spectrum, they said. Now, a combination of strategic, technological, institutional and budgetary trends places at risk the Army s competitive edge over near-peer adversaries in the next fight, they warned. Walsh outlined priorities for the Marine Corps for fiscal year 2019 as information warfare, long-range precision fires, air defense command and control in a degraded environment, protecting mobility and enhanced maneuver, and supporting the defense secretary s priorities to increase lethality, resilience, agility and to build a flexible and dynamic force. The Marine Corps ground programs modernization strategy will ensure the individual Marine enjoys a qualitative military edge over any adversary, Walsh and Shrader said in their written statement, adding that the goal is to adequately equip the Marine to ensure combat formations capable of closing and destroying the enemy.
