Mifflin St. Madison, WI (608) An educational activity of the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs Scavenger Hunt Grades 4-5 All of the answers to this scavenger hunt can be found in the Museum Exhibits. When you see you ll need to read the panel on the wall or in the cases with that title to find the answers.

2 Civil War Map Unparalleled Growth Divides a Nation In 1861, the United States was growing rapidly and a debate over state rights and slavery caused problems for our growing nation. Find the answers to the following questions: What year was President Abraham Lincoln elected? How many states seceded or left the United States after his election? Civil War Cannon Leeds & Company 6-pound Field Gun captured at the Battle of Shiloh in The higher you raise the cannon to fire the farther the MAP projectile will travel. Use the data table on the right to fill in how far the cannon could shoot in the images below. Elevation Range Find the map of the United States in the Civil War Gallery. Answer the questions below: yards , , , How many states belonged to the Union? Label these states with a N for North on the map above. 2. How many states belonged to the Confederacy? Label these states with a S for South on the map above. 3. Find all the states Wisconsin soldiers served in, list two: 4. A company of soldiers is traveling from Madison, WI to Washington D.C. They have been marching 10 miles a day for 81 days. Washington D.C. is 814 miles away from Madison, WI. After 10 days, have the soldiers made it to D.C. yet?

3 A civil war training camp was crowded and the soldiers spent most of their day marching. Letters from home were important for motivating soldiers. Write a short note to this soldier sitting by the campfire: Dear, Hard Tack and Coffee Hard Tack was made with 3 ingredients; Flour, Salt and Water. It was durable but could sometimes be infested by insects or spoiled. Find the real piece of hard tack in the case and draw it here: Sincerely Yours, The Battle of Antietam The Battle of Antietam began September 17, The Iron Brigade initiated battle as they marched through a cornfield. The Iron Brigade was made up of regiments from Wisconsin, Indiana and Michigan and were known for their black hats. Describe what you see in this diorama. Near what city did the Battle of Antietam take place? How many casualties were reported? How many soldiers were killed in battle? The graph below shows deaths during the civil war. Answer the following questions using the graph: Remember 1 = 1,000 soldiers 1. How many soldiers from Wisconsin died during the Civil War? 2. How many deaths were there from battle? 3. 4 Beyond the Trenches: Stories from the Front What ship did John Isermann serve on? Did he like it? How do you know? Helen Bulovsky worked in a hospital. What are some adjectives or phrases she used to describe what she saw, heard, felt, or did? The zig-zagged and oddly curved ditches in this picture are trenches. How many do you see? Do you see any buildings in the picture? Why do you think that is? What are the crater shapes in the earth made from? What else do you see in the picture? Does that surprise you? Why or Why not?

5 Mobilizing the Nation World War I What year did war break out in Europe? 2. What year did the US declare war on Germany? Trench Warfare Find the diorama depicting a World War I trench. A soldier could expect to spend up to 70 days in the trenches. Observe the diorama and circle the words below you think describe conditions in the trenches: LOOK UP! Find the Sopwith Camel Biplane. A biplane has two sets of wings. These planes had more victories in WWI than any other type of plane. These planes were tricky to fly, and more people were injured or killed during training than in action. The pilot Rodney Williams flew this plane and performed dangerous maneuvers. Complete the Acrostic using your observations of the plane. Write a word for each letter of Biplane to describe the plane or what it was like to fly it. 6 Resisting the Aggressors World War II What year did Great Britain and France declare war on Germany? The Buna Campaign The soldiers from Wisconsin s 32nd Division were sent to Buna, New Guinea in the South Pacific. Codebreaking was important to intercept enemy information. Decode the message below: 2. What happened at dawn on December 7, 1941? 3. How many days after the attack did Hitler declare war on the U.S? GI Jane: The Women of WWII Women served in the military like never before during WWII. While most served in healthcare, list the other jobs women did during WWII: Battle of the Bulge In December 1944, a major German offensive is launched against the Allies in the Ardennes Mountains region on the Western Front. Because it was the middle of winter, temperatures were frigid. Convert the temperatures from Celsius to Fahrenheit using the equation below. Celsius -10 Math (-10 x 9) = - Fahrenheit 14 0 To convert from Celsius to Fahrenheit: 5 Multiply by 9, then divide by 5, then add

How long did troops spend in country during the Vietnam War? 2. Minority groups were put in positions of leadership for the first time in the Vietnam War. Name one of these groups: 3. How many women served in Vietnam? MiG Alley is the name given by pilots to the area surrounding the Yalu River in North Korea. During the Korean War it was the sight of numerous dogfights between American and North Korean pilots. North Korean Pilots flew the MiG-15 Fighter Jet, while American Pilots flew the F-86 Sabre Fighter Jet. Compare the stats of each of these jets below and answer the questions. 8 Persian Gulf War Iraq & Afghanistan The 100 Hours War 1. On what day did the assault in Kuwait begin? 2. What two battleships attacked Kuwait first? Over 2.4 Million soldiers have fought in Iraq and Afghanistan. Over 32,000 of these soldiers have been from Wisconsin, and 115 soldiers from Wisconsin have died while serving in these wars. 3. The major offensive, Operation Desert Storm, only lasted 100 hours. How many days is 100 hours? Soldiers in the middle east had to communicate with the citizens in Arabic which was sometimes difficult. Written Arabic looks much different than English, try writing the phrases listed below using Arabic script.
