1 1 st Grade Social Studies Veterans Day Summary This activity will have 3 components. Students will survey their family and friends to determine how many veterans they know and then create a bar graph with their results. TEKS 1.1A states that students need to describe the origins of customs and holidays. They will be creating a cut and paste timeline for the origin of Veterans Day. After reading America s White Table (about the custom of the POW/MIA table) students will complete a fill in the blank handout about the story and answer a key understanding Summary of the book: Three children set a special white table in memory of service members fallen or missing in action, and especially in honor of their Uncle John, a POW in Vietnam. 2 Steps: ** The steps of the activity can be completed in any order the teacher determines. Example: you may want to teach the origins of Veterans Day prior to having them survey their family/friends. 1. Students will take home the How Many Veterans Do I Know- Recording Sheet to complete a survey of their family, friends, etc. (give the students several days to complete the survey) 2. Students will create a bar graph with the results from their survey ( How Many Veterans Do I Know- Graph handout). **NOTE: if students do not complete the Recording Sheet provide them with another student s data to complete their graph 3. AFTER teaching about the origins of Veterans Day, students will complete a cut and paste timeline of the events (1918-World War I ends, armistice, Armistice Day becomes a holiday, Armistice Day is changed to Veterans Day, 1970s custom of the POW/MIA table develops) Handout: Timeline: Origins of Veterans Day 4. AFTER reading America s White Table students will complete the fill in the blank handout about the story. The most important piece of this handout is the sentence students will write answering How does the White Table honor the members of your family, church and friends that served in the Armed Forces? Handout: America s White Table Scoring the Assessment Use the rubric to assess each of the 4 portions of the activity. NOTES to the teacher about converting RUBRIC to a % score Points possible = 20 Points earned = 19 This student would receive 95 percent as a result of her rubric score if the evaluator changes it into a percent. If that is the desired method, try using one of the options below to determine the letter grade. Conversion: Turn the rubric score into a percent by dividing the points earned by the points possible, and then use the scale provided. Example: Student earns 19 out of 20 points = 95%
