3 The Battle of Antietam Civil War Hospitals The Battle of Antietam began September 17, The Iron Brigade initiated battle as they marched through a cornfield. The Iron Brigade was made up of regiments from Wisconsin, Indiana and Michigan and were known for their black hats. 1. How did witnesses describe the landscape after the battle? 2. Near what city did the Battle of Antietam take place? 3. How many casualties were reported? 4. How many soldiers were killed in battle? 5. Cameras At Antietam = 1,000 soldiers Total Deaths Wisconsin Deaths in the Civil War Although cameras were around before the Civil War, the war became a new venue for photography. However, because exposure times were so long, it was almost impossible to capture action shots. Most photographs were portraits of soldiers, or dead soldiers on the battlefield. How do you think photographs like this one affected the civilian perspective of the war? Deaths in Battle Deaths from Disease If you were a civil war soldier wounded in the arm, your chance of death was 14%. If you were wounded in the hip, your chance of death was 88%. Amputation was the most common treatment for wounds. While your arm could be amputated, little could be done to treat your hip wound.

5 Mobilizing the Nation World War I Fearful New Weapons 1.What year did war break out in Europe? 2. What year did the US declare war on Germany? 3. What year was the Selective Service created? 4. Production of new technologies like machine guns and tanks boomed during the beginning of the war. What did this mean for the intensity of combat and number of casualties in WWI? Since Trench warfare often resulted in stalemate, the introduction of chemical weapons such as Chlorine and Mustard Gases became a way to break this deadlock. 6 Sopwith Camel Biplane LOOK UP! Find the Sopwith Camel Biplane. A biplane has two sets of wings. These planes had more victories in WWI than any other type of plane. These planes were tricky to fly, and more people were injured or killed during training than in action. The pilot Rodney Williams flew this plane and performed dangerous maneuvers. 1. The Sopwith Camel Biplane is preparing to fly from London to Berlin, a total of 678 Miles. Estimate how long it will take if the biplane travels at max speed?
