Starke (D/GENE), Vice President of the West Point Phi Kappa Phi Chapter, presented the Phi Kappa Phi-West Point Chapter Scholarship at the James I. O Neil High School Senior Awards Ceremony. This year s recipient was Ms. Suzanne Henderson, daughter of LTC Joe Henderson (D/GENE). Ms. Henderson is planning to attend the University of Georgia (Athens) in the fall. POC is Michelle Gerdes, michelle.gerdes@usma.edu Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering Completed Events 1. ERDC Coordinates Review of ATP General Engineering. LTC Hart, ERDC Engineering Fellow coordinated a review of the ATP General Engineering final draft with the West Point faculty. In addition to LTC Hart, COL Hanus, Civil Engineer Division Director; LTC Starke, Department of Geography and Environmental Engineering; Dr. St. Leger, Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science; and MAJ McCoy, Civil Engineering participated in the review. The review was provided to LTC Morrow, Chief of Engineer Doctrine at the US Army Engineer School and helps ensure our doctrine meets the needs of the force. POC is LTC Steven D. 3 Page3 2. ERDC-West Point Deployed Structures Lab Conducts First Test. The first test at ERDC- West Point Deployed Structures Lab was conducted by MAJ Scott Katalenich, Dr. Gunnar Tamm and LTC Steve Hart on 6 June. MAJ Katalenich conducted a blower door test that measures air infiltration into a structure. The SIP Hut and B Hut were both evaluated using six infiltration parameters. In each parameter, the SIP Hut demonstrated a 97% improvement in performance over the B Hut. Details can be seen in the attached slide. POC is LTC Steven D. Hart, ERDC Engineering Fellow and Director of Infrastructure Studies for the Center for Innovation and Engineering at steven.hart@usma.edu or Completed Events Department of Physics and Nuclear Engineering Senior Leader s Experience: During 3-7 June, six faculty members from the Department of Physics and Nuclear Engineering supported Senior Leaders Experience (SLE): Dr. Dan Schultz, MAJ Brian Kohler, MAJ Howie Titzel, Mr. Bill Richardson, Mr. Bud Warran, and Prof. Tom Lainis. Also helping on the SHARP stand-down day were Dr. Harrell, MAJ Barbaras, and LTC Hartke. Approximately 120 candidates participated in both physics and nuclear engineering hands-on activities and studies.
4 Page4 The two photos below are of SLE students conducting an experiment in superconductivity. To create a superconductor, the material must drop to a temperature of 92K or -294 degrees Fahrenheit. The students thus work with liquid nitrogen which is at -321 degrees Fahrenheit. The Physics, Superconductivity, Electromagnetism, and Nuclear Engineering Workshop consisted of two halves: The physics, superconductivity, and electromagnetism half of this workshop included an overview of the physics principles relating to forces, torques, energy and light, a superconductivity laboratory where liquid nitrogen was used to help levitate a small magnet over a sample of superconducting material, and applications of electromagnetic theory in simple circuits and to the operation of electric motors and generators. With a hands-on approach, the candidates operated a small electromagnet, motor and generator. At the conclusion of the physics portion of the workshop, the candidates were provided the opportunity to fire a potato gun, fire a vacuum gun, and ride a hovercraft with little friction. In the nuclear engineering half of the workshop, the candidates will learn how nuclear power can be used to help meet the world s growing energy needs and how nuclear power is essential for developing economy of the future while limiting the effects of global climate change. Next, they discussed research opportunities for cadets at USMA in the Department of Physics and Nuclear Engineering and toured the Department s new accelerator laboratory. This session concluded with a hands-on nuclear science laboratory in which the candidates used two different radiation detectors to calculate the effectiveness of various radiation-shielding materials and identify an unknown radioactive sample.
5 Page5 Current Events IAD(A)s: The Department of Physics and Nuclear Engineering prepared 22 cadets (including one plebe) to go on AIADs to nine locations (two international) this summer. The numbers are down from last summer (39 cadets (5 plebes) to 20 locations (4 international)) due to sequestration. Cadets Wink and Sloan along with Navy & Air Force cadets with ADM(R) McRaven CST: During summer 2013 (21 May 21 August), six officers from The Department of Physics and Nuclear Engineering are supporting cadet summer training events.
6 Page6 Future Events Conference: During June, COL Bryndol Sones, Nuclear Engineering Program Director, is traveling to Atlanta, GA to complete ABET Assessment Training. The training is offered in conjunction with the American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE) Conference. The training is in support of the Nuclear Engineering Program ABET Record Year AY14 and the ABET certification. Department of Geography and Environmental Engineering 1. Cadets learn about West Point s cultural landscape: Cadets in STAP EV203 Physical Geography used in-class lessons about the components of culture to engage in a scavenger hunt. The exercise allowed cadets to investigate how cultural ideas are represented in the Academy s architecture and the spatial layout. The POC is Dr. Jon Malinowski at mal@usma.edu Photo: EV203 STAP cadets study West Point s cultural geography outside of Taylor Hall (photo by COL Wiley Thompson). 7 Page7 COL James Ness and the ICT continued documenting the training and preparation of the 3rd Brigade 10th Mountain for their upcoming deployment to the provinces south and east of Kabul. The pictures are from JRTC STX lane training of Charlie Company, 710 th Brigade Support Battalion. The Medical Company did not receive any cultural training and were unclear at points on how to react to a mass casualty involving local national women. At this time in the training there was an ongoing gun fight and several explosions finally drove the medical contingent out of the village. The woman on the litter was not moved into the ambulance because the male litter bearers did not want to "touch the women." The soldiers in this case overextended the mores concerning the Pashtu honor of women and simply walked away rather than assist with loading her into the ambulance. Some local national men role players put the wounded woman in the ambulance and the soldiers returned to retrieve their litter. The scene ended with the villagers yelling "boro boro" meaning "go, go" as in go away. The resulting impression of the local nationals was unfavorable towards the unit. The Institute of Creative Technology's (ICT) production team will generate webisodes from the collected film depicting key lessons. The ICT is engaged in the project to develop Hollywood quality shorts so that lessons will be accessible and memorable across echelons of the force. In the upcoming fiscal year COL Ness will travel to Afghanistan to film elements of the 3rd Brigade in this longitudinal study. The webisodes will be packaged in a social media context allowing for sorting of comments and posts by assessed quality, funniest comments, rank and experience of contributors and other serious as well as entertaining sorts to engage the soldier in the content. COL Ness will work with the ICT and IETD to manage the prototype and engage EECS faculty and cadets in the development process. Currently COL Ness's grant is supporting two AIADs to the ICT to assist with production. The Cadets will follow through with the project for their capstone, which will be presented Projects' Day POC is COL James Ness, james.ness@usma.edu.
