Dr. Jon Malinowski's article, "The Kurse of Kumbayah - Camp Hollywood", exploring pop culture stereotypes of the summer camp industry, has been reprinted in a special reissue of CAMP: A Resource for Families published by the American Camp Association (ACA). Dr. Malinowski served on the ACA's Committee for the Advancement of Research and Evaluation for many years and is the co-author of The Summer Camp Handbook, an award-winning how-to guide for parents. POC is Dr. Jon Malinowski at jon.malinowski@usma.edu. 2. Guest Lecture. The Center for the Study of Civil-Military Operations (CSCMO) sponsored a lecture for EV376 (The Geography of the Middle East) on Friday 8 February by Dr. Michael Brennan USMA 66. Dr. Brennan is a respected physician, international envoy and a past President of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He spoke about his experiences working in the region to improve education and training of medical staff and medical / health care systems, in concert with military organizations, to bring about positive change in the Civil-Military realm. He gave cogent examples of successes achieved in operations in Iraq, Japan and Haiti and also related some of the challenges to make greater impacts in Afghanistan, Syria and Libya. He left cadets with a great lifelong example of the premise Be, Know, Do and demonstrated how important relationships are in breaking through cultural gaps as a military professional and world citizen. POC is LTC Andrew Lohman at andrew.lohman@usma.edu.

Page13 Picture: Dr. Michael Brennan speaks to cadets in EV376. Department of Mathematical Sciences On Thursday, January 17, 2013 the Department of Mathematical Sciences, with funding from the Center for Leadership and Diversity in STEM, hosted the second speaker in a series entitled Women of Color in the Mathematical Sciences. Dr. Syvillia Averett, Assistant Professor at Central State University in Ohio, spoke on The RePresentation of Me: Learning Math, Living Math and Loving (almost) Every Moment. This speaker series aims to increase the presence of underrepresented minority faculty in STEM, by providing a venue where cadets can meet and interact with minority women mathematicians from a variety of universities. For more information regarding this series, please contact Dr. Pamela E. Harris at (845) or pamela.harris@usma.edu.

Page14 The Institute for Mathematics and its Applications (IMA), founded in 1982, is a National Science Foundation funded visitors institute that has grown to become among the most influential math institutes in the world. It connects scientists, engineers, and mathematicians in order to address scientific and technological challenges in a collaborative, engaging environment, developing transformative, new mathematics and exploring its applications, while training the next generation of researchers and educators.

Page15 In the latest annual report, The Year in Review , ( two articles feature the participation of Dr. Candice Price, now Assistant Professor in DMath at USMA. One article describes the research program carried out by the team led by her former supervisor Dr. Isabel Darcy of the University of Iowa. This program focuses on applications of topology and graph theory to the problem of determining the shape of DNA bound by proteins. The second article, entitled Candice Price: At the Top of her Game, covers Dr. Price s experience while spending a year at the IMA.

Page17 Department of Physics and Nuclear Engineering Completed Events Class Visit: On 31 January, LT (JG) Sarah Tyree spoke to cadets for 15 minutes in both hours of NE355 (Nuclear Reactor Engineering). LT Tyree is enrolled in the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program in Saratoga Spring, NY. Sarah is the brother of CDT Peter Tyree (USMA Class of 2013) and of CPT Luke Tyree (USMA Class of 2008). Peter Tyree contacted the Department of Physics and Nuclear Engineering on behalf of his sister who was interested in learning about our nuclear engineering program. She spoke to cadets about her experience in the Navy Nuclear Program and about her service on the USS MOMSEN. LT Tyree Colloquium: During February, Mr. Leo Bittiker visited from Los Alamos National Labs (LANL), NM. He presented a colloquium to the Department of Physics and Nuclear Engineering Faculty on The LANSCE User Facility on 12 February. Colloquium: On 21 February, DTRA, Nuclear Science and Engineering Research Center will host an NE400 Nuclear Engineering Seminar Series Colloquium given by Dr. Richard Garwin on Reflections on Nuclear Weapons: Then and Now. West Point s Center for the Advancement of Leader Development & Organizational Learning (CALDOL) Authentic Leadership Workshop (ALW) On 8-10 February 2013, over 40 USMA staff and faculty from 16 different departments gathered in the Haig Room in Jefferson Hall to discover their authentic leadership style. Led by Nick Craig (president of the Authentic Leadership Institute) and a team of facilitators, each participant shared several crucible leadership experiences to help discover their leadership sweet spot. Through large group discussion and facilitated breakout sessions, participants honed in on the purpose of their leadership and how they can best leverage that purpose in the future. It was truly inspirational watching such a diverse group of leaders from across USMA engage in reflection and personal development. This amazing event would not have been possible without the generous support of Nick Craig and his team of facilitators who shared their time and passion for leader development. Thanks also go out to key leaders from BS&L, BTD, C&LS, C&ME, DMI, DEP, DPE, EECS, ELDP, G&ENE, ODIA, PNE, SCPME, SE, and SOSH for your unyielding support of faculty and staff development! Positive, Inspiring, Energizing! POC: katie.christy@usma.edu
