4 Rotary District 5910 Global and Community Health Leadership Academy Historically, Rotarians put their energies and efforts into selected community projects building parks, rehabilitating local landmarks, and in countless other endeavors which leaves a community generally a better place when the project is completed. The traditional focus concentrates on a perceived community problem that Rotarians tackle and solve. However, nearly nine centuries ago, Spanish philosopher Maimonides observed, Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. Presenting a community with an accomplished project may serve to make the citizens better off in the short-term, but the Rotary contribution frequently ends at that point. The teach a man to fish sentiment guides the new Rotary International Global Grant process. In large measure, the project is the process as envisioned by Rotary International and articulated by General Secretary, John Hewko. This emphasis requires a shift in thinking about international projects. How can you help accomplish this task? The answer lies in creation of a Global and Community Health Leadership Academy to enhance the health infrastructure of a local community using knowledgeable Rotarians and provide service learning opportunities to a new generation of global health practitioners. Guided by Rotary partners both here in Texas and in partner clubs in Guatemala, graduate students from Texas A&M University will lead the local community to establish an infrastructure to identify and prioritize community health needs. This needs assessment will take place this year and is already funded. The process then turns to implementing projects designed to meet the most pressing needs by engaging local citizens in building required structures or facilities. This entire process seeks to leave behind the infrastructure to facilitate future community decision-making. Additionally, the Academy provides valuable experience to public health graduate students and lays the foundation for future Rotary projects. We need your help and support for the Rotary Global Grant application to fund the creation of the Academy. Please consider becoming a partner in this exciting international project! Rotary Club Sponsorship Levels: Lead Partner: $10,000 - $15,000 Associate Partner: $5,000 Partner: $1,000 Yes, my club will be a partner! Club Name I am interested but cannot commit right now. Please contact me in the next month to discuss it further. Club Name Club Contact Name Club Contact Name Telephone Telephone Sponsorship Level Questions? 5 President Elects and Club Leadership Reminders Governor-Elect Doris Lockey advises that the District Directory will be published based on the names of Officers and Directors listed in ClubRunner. We need club leaders to go onto the district website and update their Club Executives and Directors. Club should be sure to include their Membership Chair and Foundation Chair. President Elects and newly elected President Nominees should register and attend 2015 PETS scheduled for March 5-8, Rotary Lone Star Presidents-Elect Training Seminar (P.E.T.S.) is Rotary's training program for Rotary Club Presidents-elect and President-nominee throughout the State of Texas. The goal of Lone Star PETS, as it is called, is to prepare Presidents-elect and President-nominees for their upcoming roles through provocative plenary speakers, in-depth breakout sessions, and informal fellowship and networking with Rotary peers throughout Texas. Lone Star Presidents- Elect Training Seminar is a joint effort of ten Rotary International districts in the State of Texas. Registration is open at INTERACT AND ROTARACT CLUBS TO MIX-IT UP! New District 5910 Interact Coordinator Sally Andrews recently began planning a mixer for Interacts and Rotaracts in her area, meeting with one of the local Interact sponsors. The event will be held in late March and will give Rotaract chapters, both university and community, the opportunity to share with Interacters how they can continue under the Rotary umbrella after high school graduation. The mixer will feature speakers from Rotaract, a service project started and completed while there, sharing of great Interact projects, and of course...food!
6 Rotarians: Thank you for providing sponsorships that enabled students to attend RYLA It was another huge success and an unforgettable (and life-changing) experience-for students as well as for all the volunteers. Every year, RYLA gives our students a rich and challenging experience involving leadership training and stressing personal growth. And WOW were these students (volunteers) challenged! It was non-stop and fast-paced fro the opening bell until the finale rally. I am looking forward to RYLA And thanks again for all you do for our youth! It takes a team effort to pull off this special hometown event. People flock in to taste the delicious fried Oreos, ice cream and pizza. It is a long week but fun for all who participate. More than 10,000 people attend this event. Central's and CO Wilson's 8th graders attended Career Day at Lamar State College - Port Arthur. This annual event is sponsored by Nederland Rotary Club. Dr. Betty Reynard, President of LSC-PA, welcomed the students to the Parker Center. Kent Hutchinson explained who the Rotarians are and encouraged the youth to put service above self. The Nederland Rotary Club hosted the 14th Annual Hooked on Fishing, Not on Drugs on Saturday, February 21, 2015 at Doornbos Park in Nederland.
