It is a me to focus on Rotary s many Youth Programs. District 9780 has a proud and rich history with its involvement in New Genera ons Programs. I would like to encourage clubs to look at their New Genera ons Programs this month and maybe engage in a program or ac vity that you haven t tried before. Have a look around your community or visit your local council or school and find out where there is a need. Maybe in the areas of Literacy and Numeracy or Child Protec on, the needs are many and I know you will be able to help in some way. Clubs throughout the District are involved in many and varied programs involving Youth, from Books for Babies to Alterna ve Schoolies Programs. Maybe try a joint project with Rotaractors. Invite RYLA par cipants and Youth Exchange Students to volunteer at a club service event. Help Interactors or Youth Exchange Students raise funds for a Shelter Box. Encourage Rotaractors or Youth Exchange Students to plan a project in one of Rotary s six areas of focus. I know Membership Month has concluded, but Membership is always one of our greatest challenges and this month we have the opportunity to focus on a rac ng younger members into Rotary. Are we really doing all we can to make younger members welcome? Last year I a ended a club who had invited a group of young enthusias c volunteers Vale: Sandra Marsden to speak of their par cular interest. During the talk the Treasurer and Sargent decided they needed to count the fines and raffle money, others felt the need to stack plates, another went to the bar for a drink and one elderly gentleman fell asleep. Is this behaviour going to encourage them to join Rotary? Young people are really commi ed to improving their communi es. So many are standing for Local Government to improve their communi es. Rotary works hard to improve local communi es, why can t we a ract young people to join Rotary? Are we really trying hard enough? Are we talking to them and asking how we can involve them? Young people can be valuable collaborators because they re much closer to some of the challenges our communi es face, including hunger, illiteracy and conflict such as bullying Let us all try and introduce at least one young person to Rotary or one of the many Rotary Programs this New Genera ons Month. Tell them about e clubs, satellite clubs and corporate membership, tell them about the relaxed a endance requirements, but most of all tell them about Rotary and what it does, tell them about the many projects Rotary is involved in and how they can be involved in one of the most effec ve service organisa ons in the world. To achieve Peace Through Service we need Youth in Service. Australian Rotary Health has provided almost $28 million worth of funds to medical research as a result of its kind supporters.

We have awarded 29 Ian Sco Scholarships, in honour of the man who founded Australian Rotary Health in 1981, since their commencement in 2000.

This small commi ee has a wealth of experience. Its membership of, PP Cheryl Bellman, PP Jim Allen and PDG Ted Gaffney have a wealth of experience to act as liaison between Rotary and Rotoract. Australian Rotary Health Supports New Generations Scholars find break through in health research. Australian Rotary Health has provided almost $28 million worth of funds to medical research as a result of its kind supporters. This is achieved through a range of scholarships and research grants including PhD Scholarships. We have awarded 29 Ian Sco Scholarships, in honour of the man who founded Australian Rotary Health in 1981, since their commencement in Australian Rotary Health has also partnered with Rotary Clubs and Universi es around Australia to award 78 Funding Partners Scholarships since Each PhD Scholarship is awarded as an annual tax free s pend of up to $29,000. Our Ian Sco Scholars have studied the effects of globaliza on on suicide rates around the world, determined the priori es for depression and bipolar disorder research, and one PhD project provided strategies for tackling ea ng disorders which contributed to the curriculum in the youth version of the Mental Health First Aid program. Funding Partner Scholarships have financed the development of new drugs to treat osteoarthri s, a study which uncovered the founda ons for pancrea c cancer treatments and an inves ga on into poten al proteins to treat Alzheimer s. Australian Rotary Health s largest range of scholarships currently available is Funding Partner Scholarships. They are vital in providing much needed finances for health research and are not possible without the partnership and support of Rotary Clubs and Districts around Australia. Australian Rotary Health currently funds 7 Ian Sco Scholarships and 38 Funding Partner Scholarships into the areas of neurological and auto immune disorders, cancer, children s health and mental health. With her special humour she has been able to extract considerable sums from members last year and is con nuing this year Rotary Club of Mt Gambier West. PP Peter Drake (P.H.F. sapphire pin.) Peter contracted polio twice as a child and has been a regular donor to The Rotary Founda on. In our Club he would be regarded as the member who has most consistently championed the cause of polio eradica on. AG PP Libby Furner (P.H.F. sapphire pin). Libby was recognised for almost weekly catering for working bees, introduc on of the Dic onary Project (from the USA), District Commi ees (Literacy Chair, Awards Chair and Assistant Governor, Membership). She was also a member of the Blood Donor Reference Group for Rotary Interna onal. During her Presidency she introduced TRF collec on boxes to members resul ng in the largest number of donors in our history and is a regular donor to TRF. She is a strong supporter of ShelterBox. As a member of Red Cross for thirty years she was the prime mover in returning blood collec on services to Mt Gambier and has recently served as Zone Chairman and has been a member of the State and Na onal Advisory Boards. PE Lisa Rowley P.H.F. Lisa was recognised for her extensive work in treasury ma ers during the building of our house fund raiser, managing a very large budget. In organising and rostering most of the volunteer support for the Na onal B.M.X. tles held recently in Mt Gambier, Lisa coordinated the work of a number of other volunteer and service organisa ons. She currently holds the posi on of Treasurer whilst preparing to be PE Lisa Rowley President.

The Geelong Book Fair in August again produced an outstanding result. Now in its 8th year, the Book Fair was ini ated originally as a short term fundraiser to providing financial support for a housing project in Tsunami affected Sri Lanka. The Book Fair was held in the Geelong West Town Hall with supplies being sourced from Rotary s Dona ons in Kind, deceased estates, schools, cancelled library books, and from anyone else doing a clean up or downsizing. Co ordinator, Daryl McLure PHF said: The first sales day saw a 50m queue of buyers wai ng for the doors to open. Rotary Club of Ocean Grove and Mega Swim! Even the DG got in the swim! Six teams entered to raise funds for Mul ple Sclerosis research and assistance to MS sufferers. Entertainment was provided by singers some suffering from MS. The event s MS Ambassador was none other than Rtn Mar n Stow from the Rotary Club of Geelong Central. The event has so far raised $25,000. PP Stephen Yewdall Rotary Club of Geelong West PP Trevor McArdle and MS staff at the start of the Mega Swim Warrnambool Rotary House gets underway. The turning of the first "sod" in the construc on of Rotary House Warrnambool occurred Monday 3 rd September. There was an excellent a endance, with representa ves from all the local Rotary clubs as well as the Mayor, Jacinta Ermacora and other council representa ves. Mayor Jacinta Ermacora praised the benefits that this project will bring to Warrnambool and the wider area. Chairman Andrew Sugge looked at home si ng in the digger and one was reminded of a boy and an overgrown Tonka truck! The "sod" was overturned with no major catastrophe or injury to either the site or the onlooker. The BBQ and drinks were well received on a chilly a ernoon. Many thanks to SES for supplying the tent and to the volunteers who helped facilitate this event. RC Warrnambool and Brophy Family and Youth Services 2012 Father of the Year More than 700 south west fathers and father figures were nominated for this year s Father of the Year award, which was presented at a special breakfast ceremony in Warrnambool just prior to Father s Day. This is the fourth year that entries were received from schools across the Warrnambool City and Moyne Shire. Students from Prep to Grade 3 drew a picture of themselves with their father; those in Grade 4 to Year 8 had to answer two short ques ons, and Year 9 to Year 12 had to write up to 150 words about their father. Organiser, Rtn Ian Cairns, said the award was about recognising the posi ve role fathers play in the lives of their children, and it was not limited to biological fathers it could be a stepfather, grandfather, uncle, big brother, or anyone who has a father like role in the child s life. This year s winner was Grassmere father of four daughters, Stephen Mitchell, whose daughter Grace entered him in the compe on. Stephen and his family have won a weekend s accommoda on at the St Kilda Parkview Hotel and passes to the Melbourne Aquarium and Zoo. The two runners up won $100 Bunnings vouchers, and each category winning child won a $200 South West Credit Union Savings account. I hope Voca onal Directors have started to think about October within their own clubs. rotaryogrsec@gmail.com Images and articles words District Conference 2013 Bravehearts On 4 th September leading representa ves from Geelong s business and community groups a ended a breakfast at Simonds Stadium hosted by Bravehearts to celebrate White Balloon Day. The keynote speaker was the founder of Bravehearts, He y Johnston, who established the organisa on in 1997 to address the issue of paedophilia within community, both na onally and interna onally. Sta s cally, one in five children have been, or could be, sexually assaulted before the age of 18. Bravehearts exists to educate and protect children, raise awareness, educate adults, honour and support survivors and, ul mately, to stop child sexual support. Bravehearts preventa on services include: Di o s Keep Safe Adventure a live schoolbased personal safety programme for children; Resources for families and survivors ; Specifically targeted workshops; Risk assessment audits and reports; Research and lobbying ; Hetty Johnston Cyber safety ini a ves; Community awareness campaigns. He y Johnston will be one of the keynote speakers at Rotary. District 9780 Conference in April next year.
