1 Doug McDonald * District Governor Issue #10 * April 2018 District 5190 Making a Difference Newsle er This month we hold one of the biggest events in the con nuum of learning and prepara on of the Rotary year, the Club Leadership Assembly on April 7 th at the Nugget Hotel in Sparks. Star ng in February with Pre PETS and con nuing in March with the President Elect Training Seminar (PETS), we ve focused on preparing presidents elect for their year of club leadership. Training and learning con nue in April with the Club Leadership Assembly (CLA), when next year s presidents bring their leadership team and club members for a day of prepara on, informa on and inspira on. A endees will learn about the changes Rotary is making in membership and mee ng plans, learn about ways to manage and improve their club opera ons, and meet Rotarians from throughout the district. Every district in Rotary is expected to hold an Assembly to help club leaders learn more about their role. In May, we will celebrate our year at the District Conference. This, too, is a training opportunity. Part 3 of the Rotary Leadership Ins tute, Facilitator Training, Grants Management Training, and breakouts in topics per nent not only to Rotary but to business and personal life will be featured. Coming full circle, the Avenues of Service seminar will be held in September, with the objec ve of presen ng, sharing and discussing take away inspira onal ideas that clubs can adopt and use in all areas of community, interna onal, voca onal, youth and club service. Our Training Con nuum also includes Rotary Leadership Ins tute (RLI) and Rotary Academy. RLI is a threepart facilitated training that contains Rotary informa on and leadership ideas that gives par cipants a broad range of informa on and ideas, while the Academy is a self study program to learn more about Rotary in depth. Our district is fortunate to have outstanding leaders and commi ee members dedicated to sharing their knowledge and exper se to help Rotarians grow in knowledge and leadership. We encourage you to par cipate! 1

4 There are a number of items that make Rotary Youth Exchange (RYE) unique compared to other high school exchange programs. A few of these are the low cost for a student to par cipate, the Rotary support that the students receive while on exchange, the monthly s pend that the student receives while on exchange, and the prepara on that the students and their parents are given before they leave on exchange. Another unique feature of RYE is the regional RYE organiza ons that provide networking and best prac ces for their members. The Northern American Youth Exchange Network (NAYEN) is comprised of all RYE programs in Canada, Mexico and the United States. Similar organiza ons exist in other parts of the Rotary world. The regional organiza ons have the resources to take on projects that a single RYE program could not do on their own. Those of you who are either club counselors or youth exchange officers, or host parents have complete several online training modules that cover youth protec on and your responsibili es in your youth exchange area. These online trainings have been created and financed by NAYEN. Once a year NAYEN holds an annual conference and District 5190 has a ended 15 of the 19 NAYEN annual conferences. This year the conference was in mid March and Bob Conner (Outbound Coordinator) and Jon Greene (Execu ve Secretary) a end the three day conference in Omaha, NE. While the conference is for NAYEN members, RYE officers from around the world a end, including Brazil, Argen na, Thailand, Japan, Germany, France, Spain, Denmark, and other countries. At the NAYEN conference a endees discuss what works for them and what some of their problem areas are. The sessions cover many topics including inbound and outbound orienta ons, crisis management, early returns, how to help the students learn the language of their host country before the leave on exchange, travel and insurance issues, and social media. The networking that takes place at the NAYEN conference is invaluable for helping us have a successful program. It is an opportunity for us to meet face to face with our exchange partners and discuss our mutual concerns. An example of the benefits of this networking was several years ago we had an outbound candidate who has Asperger syndrome. We had iden fied a hos ng district for this student. At the NAYEN conference several of the members of the D5190 RYE Commi ee met with several of the youth exchange officers from the hos ng district to discuss this exchange. By the me we returned from the conference, we were very confident that this student would have an excellent exchange, and we were not disappointed.. Each year at the NAYEN Conference districts who meet specific standards and achievements are presented with an achievement award. Once again District RYE received an achievement award. If your Rotary club is not par cipa ng in youth exchange, and you are interes ng in bringing Rotary Youth Exchange to your community, a member of the District RYE commi ee is available to meet with you and your club officers. All you need to do is send an to info@rye5190.org. By Jon Greene 4

12 Amador Upcountry Launches Rotary Community Corps Ever wondered how to create a closer bond between your Club and the non Rotarian volunteers who par cipate in events and projects? Rotary Community Corps may be the answer. District Governor Doug McDonald threw out a challenge to Presidents and Presidents Elect during his mid year visit to Area 7 (Amador County). DG Doug educated us on how Rotary Community Corps (RCC) allows Clubs to develop a sponsorship rela onship with non Rotarians. This seemed like an excellent opportunity for our small Club. All of our projects grow out of community needs and involve partnerships with mul ple organiza ons and individuals. We are known as The Li le Club That Does A Lot but we can t do it alone. Currently we are pursuing two Matching Grant projects. Each project has up to four partner organiza ons that s a lot of community leaders. Check out Rotary Community Corps and see if it might be a good fit for your Club. Call for SERGEANT AT ARMS VOLUNTEERS 2018 Rotary is in need of good volunteers to aid the great Rotarians of District 5190 Please volunteer to be a Sergeant at Arms for the District Club Leadership Assembly and District Conference. We ll work around anyone s schedule! The assigned duty could be as short as 2 hours or just one day, or all weekend long. We like to say, Try it, you ll like it! District Club Leadership Assembly is Saturday, April 7 th District Conference is May th Please contact Don or Anita Daniels, and we can provide all the informa on a Rotarian would need. dondaniels@sbcglobal.net Phone: VOLUNTEER AND ENJOY THE EVENT WHILE YOU SERVE! 12

14 Area 11 Rotarians Celebrate the Rotary Founda on in Elko By Helen Hankins (Pictured at le are: Pedro Ormaza & Carl Vaughan) Carl Vaughan cap vated a crowd of more than 70 at the Elko Basque Club Saturday night as he spoke passionately about his life long fight against polio. Afflicted with polio since the age of 3, Oregon Rotarian Carl Vaughan shared his story and told about his efforts to end polio worldwide. Eradica on of polio, a paralyzing disease primarily affec ng children, has been the goal of Rotary Interna onal since the mid 1980 s. As a result of their efforts and the efforts of others, today the virus exists in only two countries, Afghanistan and Pakistan. But un l it is completely eradicated, it can be reintroduced in areas now free of the Polio virus it is just a plane ride away. During the evening, Basque dancers shared some of their culture and wonderfully executed the wine dance. Rotarians also par cipated in a silent auc on, and a wine raffle. It is es mated that about $8,000 was raised for the Rotary Founda on to help in the eradica on of Polio and other humanitarian efforts. Contribu ons to the Founda on for polio eradica on are matched 2:1 by the Bill and Melinda Gates Founda on. For more informa on about Rotary and its humanitarian efforts please contact Jean Sloan at: Clubs are reminded that completed Performance Planners are due to Recognition Chair Judy Clark by April 21 in order that clubs can be recognized for their achievements at the District Conference in May. Please do not hesitate to contact Judy prior to the deadline either via . D5190Awards@gmail.com, text or cell, , to answer all your questions. She is eager to help you share your accomplishments with your fellow Rotarians! 14
