Mr M Sivasankar IAS, Secretary, (Power) Govt. of Kerala and Chairman, KSEB started off with an introduction about KSEB, its 1.15 Crore customers in the state and how the increase in demand has risen by 65% over the last 10

23 22 years. He explained about the current energy scenario in the state, to better understand its implications and options for solutions, he said 3000MW is the average requirement of power. Mr Mohammed Y Safirulla IAS, Director, Kerala State IT Mission spoke about the various sectors in which further developments have to be made to truly make a movement towards building a Digital Society in Kerala. This include Bharat Net, WiFi Hot Spots, Digital Literacy, E Banking Kiosks, Mobile Governance, E Office, School and Cyber Security Division. Dr. Kuncheria P Isaac, Vice Chancellor, Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Technical University started off stating that India have the youngest population in the world at 47% and is on the way to becoming the world s largest English speaking nation as well as the Largest IT industry in the world. Project based learning, experiential learning, theory coupled with practice, Flipped Classroom and an overhaul in the evaluation system are much needed changes. Hybrid learning tools like Online MOOCs, Physical/Virtual Labs, Expert Mentors and Personalized Learning need to be adapted to meet the changing needs of the industry as well as result in effective teaching.he concluded with the observation that in order to change with the changing times, new technology startup jobs will require new engineering skills. Symposium on the Art and Science of Learning IEEE Kerala Section in association with ICT Academy Kerala conducted the Symposium at Aryanet Institute of Technology Palakkad, Kerala on 27, 28, 29 July 2015.

24 The symposium consisted of workshops, interactive seminars and uses theatre as a communication tool. The aim of the symposium is to shift the focus from teaching to learning, paving the way for adopting student and learning centric methodologies in education. 23 Several methodologies (problem-based learning, design-centric approaches and experiential learning) will be explored. It is imperative that the community (learners, educators, parents, managers and the society at large) be exposed to such approaches, so that they will act as a catalyst to evolve and transform the educational landscape for the good of humanity. 27 July 2015 : Workshop on Education: Pedagogical Approaches to Learning by Dr. Suresh Valiyaveettil, National University of Singapore (NUS) Forenoon: A review of teaching and learning concepts, Pedagogical issues; Teaching and learning: (a) Teacher Students Tools Curriculum, (b) Learning Writing, Reading and Labs; Peer Learning Class Room vs Selflearning; Instruction methodologies; and; Intellectual development metacognition, Case studies, Assessment. 25 24 light plays a vital role in our daily lives, while revolutionizing medicine, international communication, computing and economical as well as political aspects of the global society, UNESCO had launched this campaign to sensitise the public, especially the school children, on the role of light in human life as well as how well it could be utilized for human welfare. IYL activities in Kerala:The IYL festivals in Kerala started with attracting 1.4 million students from 80% of the 12,600 plus schools in the State, who in successive steps at nearly 700 local government (Panchayat & Municipal) level, 129 regional, and 14 district level fests, experiencing the joy of learning of optics and related technologies, experimenting and chalking out projects to showcase their understanding on the role of light in energy, industry, medicine, communications and what not. School teachers and popular science movement activists in thousands in Kerala were trained, at State and district level camps to educate the students on the role of light in our lives, to demonstrate experiments and educational toys and puzzles, to engage groups of children in related projects, and to come up with solutions for the challenges they can identify and work for overcoming. Starting from July 2015, the school levels activities and contests were gearing up for Panchayath/Urban body level, Region level and Revenue district level contests up to the end of December. 5 to 8 winners climb up the ladder. Special issues of science magazine Sastrakeralam and Eureka, distributed in several ten thousands helped students to understand why IYL is important. B.4 Students Activities The student Activities of Kerala Section is vibrant in organizing activities and promoting the vision of IEEE across the state. With 77 student branches and 3600 members, the student team led by the student activities chair support and volunteer to any activity that needs technological solutions.

28 27 For effective management of such a vibrant, geographically spread student membership, the section has been following the hub and spoke administrative model; the Local Integrated Network of IEEE in Kerala (LINK). The primary aim of LINK is networking student branches in an effective way, thereby increasing the value in IEEE Student membership. LINK has achieved tremendous results, causing an exponential increase in student branches and student activities in IEEE Kerala Section. The LINK and its subsidiary HUB teams (three in numbers divided as Travancore Hub, Kochi Hub and Malabar Hub for the geographic distribution of Kerala Section) are being trained with effective leadership skills which is being passed on to the student community, thus improving key skills like professionalism and ethics in students.
