2 President s Report 2007 Bob Sutton President Twenty years ago, a group of visionary South Dakotans, led by Governor George S. Mickelson, established the South Dakota Community. Through the generosity of the McKnight, the 3M, and several South Dakota businesses and individuals, the newly-created organization was touting endowment assets of $10 million. Think back to November 11, 1987, the day the South Dakota Community was founded. Ronald Reagan was President of the United States, and there were 60 million fewer people in our country than we have today (242 million vs. 303 million). Governor George S. Mickelson was leading our state, and there were 100,000 fewer people calling South Dakota home than in A gallon of gasoline was 95 cents These numbers tell you just how much life has changed over the past and a first-class stamp was 22 cents. twenty years. It was this type of change that the founders of the South Dakota Community recognized early in the process. They knew that to meet the growing needs of future South Dakotans, a savings account that could benefit all populations, demographics, geographic locations, and ages would be an incredibly useful development tool. Without question, they were right. Today, the South Dakota Community stands at over $80 million in assets, and through the generosity of our donors and partners, has distributed grant awards to communities and organizations in all 66 South Dakota counties. Through 2007, grant dollars totaling more than $30 million have improved the quality of life for South Dakotans over the past twenty years. Without visionary leadership and foresight, this would not have been possible. The true potential of the South Dakota Community is just being realized. Second generation donors are finding their way to this organization, anxious to find out how they can continue the legacy of their family name. South Dakotans who have left our state physically, but always have South Dakota in their hearts contact us on a regular basis. Their inquiries are often the same: What can I do to make a difference in my home state? You can rest assured we have a few suggestions! The twentieth year of operation for the South Dakota Community was one for the record books. We facilitated over $15 million in total gifts, and grew the endowment fund by over $13.8 million. Thousands of donors helped with this success, and they came from across the state and across the country. Their common thread is the great state of South Dakota. It is difficult to explain, but if you are from here, not very hard to understand. Whether you call it South Dakota generosity or prairie state values, it has created and sustained the South Dakota Community and our partner communities and organizations for over 20 years. To all of our past and present donors, board members, partners and staff, I extend my sincere thanks. Thank you for helping shape South Dakota. Thank you for improving the quality of life for thousands of South Dakotans. Thank you for giving of your time, talent and treasure for over 20 years. Most of all, thank you for your commitment to Success through Community Caring. 2 S o u t h D a k o t a C o m m u n i t y F o u n d a t i o n

3 The History The South Dakota Community was part of a vision the late Governor George S. Mickelson had for the State of South Dakota. The SDCF was born as a public, nonprofit corporation on November 11, 1987 as part of a vision for our state's second century. The McKnight and the 3M Corporation issued challenge grants to the state of South Dakota in an effort to memorialize the life of South Dakota native William L. McKnight. McKnight was a former CEO of the 3M Corporation and the founder of the McKnight. The state of South Dakota committed $2 million to the project, and the SDCF leadership was required to raise another $3 million in twelve months to obligate the entire challenge grant. The original $10 million has now grown to a $75 million endowment serving nonprofits and charities in South Dakota. Through the continued generosity of South Dakotans and solid investment returns, the people and communities of South Dakota will benefit for generations to come. The Mission The mission of the South Dakota Community is to promote philanthropy, receive and administer charitable gifts and invest in a wide range of programs promoting the social and economic well being of the people of South Dakota. Kinds of s The South Dakota Community accepts and administers five kinds of funds, all of which are held in permanent endowment and are designed to allow the donor to meet their charitable goals. Community Savings Accounts benefit a specific community or region of South Dakota. The earnings are awarded at the recommendation of a local board of directors. Designated s benefit specific charitable institutions named by donors in establishing their funds. Donor Advised s are funds whose donors reserve the privilege to recommend agencies to be considered for grants. Scholarship s benefit South Dakota high school graduates pursuing higher education opportunities. Unrestricted s are used at the discretion of the Board of Directors to meet deserving charitable needs and opportunities throughout South Dakota.
