2 2 George Washington Carver inducted into the Missouri Public Affairs Hall of Fame On April 17, 2015, George Washington Carver joined Harry Truman as the annual Legacy award Inductee into the Missouri Public Affairs Hall of Fame. Staff, volunteers and partners from the George Washington Carver National Monument as well as representatives from Tuskegee University and the State Historical Society of Missouri, attended the Hall of Fame induction ceremony at the White River Conference Center in Springfield, Missouri. Carver, along with living inductees Eric Grietens and Simone Bernstein, were chosen as citizens with a connection to the state of Missouri who serve as examples of global citizens by defining the essence of public affairs, and who have acted consistently for the benefit of others. 3 2015 Art & Essay P A G E 3 On Saturday, March 28th, George Washington Carver National Monument hosted approximately 315 people at a ceremony awarding certificates, ribbons, and trophies to regional fourth graders in recognition of their work in a CBA and Park sponsored Art & Essay contest. Students spent weeks preparing their entries, using creative writing and artistic expression to address the theme: If I could take an early morning walk with George Washington Carver. Missouri Southern State University s Department of Teacher Education partners with the National Park Service and Carver Birthplace Association to carry out Art & Essay. Volunteers-In-Parks support every aspect of the program. Partners and VIPs provide program logistics, presentations to classrooms, essay judging, certificate printing, art show preparation and judging, awards, and refreshments. The audience was treated to refreshments and a photo session to celebrate the accomplishments of the hard working students and teachers Junior Ranger Program at George Washington Carver National Monument

4 P A G E 4 Director s Update The Carver Birthplace Association is pleased to welcome two new Board Members to the 2015 CBA Board of Directors. Ann McCormick Executive Director Education is the key to unlock the golden door of freedom. G. W. Carver Dr. Walter Hill Dr. Hill has served as a faculty member for 37 years and Dean/Director for 27 years at Tuskegee University. He is currently Dean of the College of Agriculture, Environment and Nutrition Sciences, and Director of the 1890 Land Grant Research and Extension. During he assumed additional responsibilities as Vice Provost and Interim Provost, respectively. He provided leadership for development and recent construction of the Henderson Hall for Agricultural and Life Sciences and for new degree programs in Integrative BioSciences (PhD), Integrative Public Policy and Development (PhD), Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Engineering (PhD), and Agribusiness (BS). Dr. Hill served as faculty advisor for 17 student award winning projects and is a founder of the Carver Integrative Sustainability Center, Black Belt Family Farm Marketing Innovation Center, Alabama Land Grant Alliance, Black Belt Community Foundation and Professional Agricultural Workers Journal. Dr. Hill received his PhD in agronomy from the University of Illinois, Urbana, Master s degrees from both the University of Arizona and University of Chicago, and the B.S. degree from Lake Forest College, Illinois. Dr. Benjamin Allen Dr. Benjamin Allen served as the President of Northern Iowa University, ,concurrent with his appointment as professor of the Department of Management. During his tenure as President he provided the leadership for the Iowa state-wide mathematics and science education initiative, co-chaired the Institute for Tomorrow s Workforce, and led a successful $150 million capital campaign. His prior academic appointments include: Provost in the Interim, and Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost, Iowa State University; Dean, College of Business, Iowa State University; University Distinguished Professor in Business, and professor in both the departments of Transportation and Logistics and Economics, Iowa State University; Oren Harris Chairholder/Professor, Department of Marketing and Transportation, University of Arkansas; Director, Midwest Transportation Center, Iowa State University/University of Iowa; and Visiting McKinley Professor of Economics and Public Utilities, Department of Economics, University of llinois. Dr. Allen served as a Brookings Institution Policy Fellow, was awarded the doctorate of Humane Letters Honorary Degree by Iowa State University, is a member of Phi Kappa Phi, Beta Gamma Sigma, and the Golden Key Honor Societies. 5 P A G E 5 Ann McCormick, Executive Director of the Carver Birthplace Association, and Dr. Luther S. Williams, Association Chairman, visit the site of the Neosho Colored School on Young Street. Dr. Luther Williams, CBA Chairman of the Board, along with Mr. Charles Nodler, Neosho, MO, Mr. Larry James, Neosho, MO, Dr. Benjamin Allen, retired President of Northern Iowa University, and Dr. Walter A. Hill, Dean of the Agriculture Department at Tuskegee University, have officially formed the Carver Schoolhouse Fund-raising Committee. Dr. Williams recently spoke to the Neosho Rotary about the project, and is currently in Iowa, along with Dr. Allen and former CBA Director Paxton Williams, speaking to other groups that are potentially interested in supporting the Carver Schoolhouse project. July of 2014, the George Washington Carver Alumni Association of DC, MD, PA, & VA, held the first fund-raising event, for the school, and presented CBA with a check for $3,000. Mary Jo Burke -Kelly, a teacher at the George Washington Carver Elementary School of Cranford, NJ, purchased GWC pencils from CBA. Her students sold the pencils for $1.00 each, and were able to donate $500. After so many years of silence, these great friends of CBA are dedicated to seeing the little schoolhouse come to life. 6 P A G E 6 Nicole Marie Hitchcock Carver Scholarship Recipient To Be Recognized on Carver Day The George Washington Carver Birthplace Association is pleased to announce that Ms. Nicole Marie Hitchcock, 2015 graduate of Carthage High School in Carthage Missouri, has been chosen for the George Washington Carver Academic Scholarship. She is an outstanding young woman in all areas of leadership, academic achievement, personal achievement, and community service. Nicole has shown leadership skills as a National Honor Society reporter, Spanish Club President, Third Place PSU Biology Bowl, Genetics Exam, and Area Academic Team alternate. She was also involved in Jazz Band, Spanish Club, FCCLA, Senior Class Officer, Tennis, Soccer, and Link Crew Leader. She maintained a 4.15 GPA, graduated 4/276 in her class, and her ACT score was 31 composite. Nicole plans to attend Missouri State University in the Fall of 2015 where she will be majoring in Cell and Molecular Biology, and Medical/Science Research. The George Washington Carver scholarship is a onetime award in the amount of $1, for the academic year. It is awarded yearly to a local graduating high school senior, or local home school student receiving a GED certificate. Criteria for determining the award recipient includes academic achievement, community involvement and need. Students must plan to attend Iowa State University, Tuskegee University, Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa, or an accredited college within a 100 mile radius of Diamond, Missouri, site of the George Washington Carver National Monument.
