3 National Ocean Scholarship Program Welcome to the Dolphin Challenge Welcome to the 2013 National Ocean Sciences Bowl (NOSB) competition at Ball High School in Galveston. The Texas Sea Grant College Program is pleased to have the opportunity to host the 2013 NOSB regional competition, and we are excited about having 14 teams competing this year. Sea Grant is dedicated to the wise use and conservation of marine resources, and we provide useful information on marine science to the public, including students from pre-school through higher education. NOSB provides an opportunity for high school students in our state to demonstrate their knowledge of the sea, which, as all the contestants now know, covers some 70 percent of the surface of our planet. On behalf of the faculty, staff and student volunteers from Texas A&M University in College Station, the Galveston Bay Area Chapter of the Texas Master Naturalists, and Texas Sea Grant, we congratulate the contestants for their hard work in preparing for this competition and the coaches for their dedication. We know that the winning team will represent our state well in the national competition. Let the games begin! Terrie Looney NOSB Regional Coordinator 12 Ralph Rayburn Sportsmanship Award Ralph Rayburn embodied the spirit of the Sportsmanship Award throughout his life. The late Associate Director and Extension Program Leader with the Texas Sea Grant College Program worked tirelessly to help protect our marine resources. Through his work for Texas Sea Grant, the Texas Shrimp Association, and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, he dedicated his time and efforts to form collaborations among various groups and individuals who depend on the sustainability of these resources. He made an impact on the lives of the people he came in contact with and was simply a man of great integrity, intelligence, and generosity. Texas Sea Grant established a scholarship in his name for oceanography graduate students at Texas A&M University in College Station. 5 Online Ocean Sciences Quiz Game! An online game to promote ocean literacy and engage students, teachers and teams worldwide is now available to play at Working with the MIT Sea Grant Program, NOSB developed the Ocean Sciences Quiz (OSQ) with single-player and two-player options. Phase I pits the player against the clock. Designed to help individuals increase their knowledge of the ocean sciences, the game allows players to select specific subject areas and also pause or stop the game to check progress and comprehension by reviewing the end-of-game summary. Phase II is designed for two players on the same computer. Players compete against the clock and each other by buzzing in using their keyboard, expanding their ocean science knowledge while also practicing their quick response skills for upcoming competitions. Riviere, who provided the team trophies, grew up in the Southeast where he enjoyed all that the region has to offer outdoors. Loving the water, he joined the U.S. Navy straight out of high school and became a Rescue Swimmer on both coasts. Michael has always enjoyed art forms from different painting mediums, technical drawing, metal work and recently finding and carving driftwood, which combines his favorite things kayaking the area s waterways and enjoying Mother Nature with his desire to create something for others to enjoy. Michelangelo said about his sculptures, The idea is there, locked inside, and all you have to do is remove the excess stone, Riviere says. People say that I m an artist. That usually makes me laugh because I don t agree at all! Mother Nature is the real artist. She shapes, colors and textures the driftwood before she lets me find it along the water s edge. I m just a simple man enjoying Mother Nature s Art Museum with just a hint of talent and some tools! What people think is my artwork, is actually what She has given to me to pass on to you. So the next time you find yourself enjoying that sea turtle, dolphin or whale shaped from a unique piece of driftwood, thank Mother Nature for all of Her talent and hard work! Barr, who created the individual trophies, is from Woodville, Texas. She and her husband create custom scroll saw designs from locally grown wood. Her Dolphin Challenge trophies are made from East Texas Magnolia wood. Village B 4 9
