Local professionals and staff donated their time and provided haircuts, massages, manicures, nail painting, face painting, and hand massages to clients who purchased a $5 ticket for each service. Participants enjoyed light refreshments while they waited. The event raised enough money for the organization to spend no less than $100 on 10 children for toys for Christmas. The event was a huge success and it was enjoyed by all. *Bottom Pictures courtesy of Brian Nowlin/Southside Messenger Seniors Awarded Dominion Power Internship Central High School seniors, Brandon Williams and William Hunter Alphin have been awarded an Internship with Dominion Brunswick County Power Station. The seniors were recommended by their High Performance Technology instructors at Lake Country Advanced Knowledge Center (SVCC) in South Hill, where they are 2 nd year dual enrollment students. Once Dominion Power received their recommendations, the students completed an application and then participated in a panel interview process. The Internship positions are prestigious and difficult to receive and these young men completed the steps and were accepted! During the Internship period (6 months), they will work 20+ hours in the facility and they will be revising and developing procedures and training material for the company. They will make valuable employment contacts and gain much on the job training. In May, both students will earn a Career Studies Certificate in High Performance Technology and Advanced Manufacturing Technology and a total of 48 college credits with SVCC. Central High School is very proud of these well deserving young men! Congratulations Hunter and Brandon!

The display will be used to showcase student art from Mrs. Kunath s Art classes and artwork will be rotated periodically. This new display is a focal point for the school and it creates an area where artwork can be proudly displayed. Visitors will enjoy viewing the wonderful artwork created by the talented Art students. Art Students at VCU CMH On December 1, 2015, several of Mrs. Jean Kunath s art students participated in the VCU Community Memorial Hospital s annual Christmas window painting contest Shawn Gillikin, Tiona Brown, and Yolanda Bell. They competed against students from Park View High School, Bluestone High School, and Kenston Forest School to see who could draw and paint the best window painting for the Hundley Annex residents windows. derful drawing and painting of a Charger in a sleigh. 3 Central High School, 131 KV Road, Victoria VA, 23974; Phone: Page 3 CHS Charger Courtyard Campaign Begins Plans are underway to improve and expand the current Central High School patio, an area that is enjoyed regularly by students, staff, and community members. This newly renovated area will be called, "The Charger Courtyard." The Charger Courtyard Campaign is being spearheaded by Assistant Principal Natalie Coronas. The project includes purchasing shade sails for the current patio, building additional picnic tables, and creating a center courtyard off of the patio. A gazebo will be built by carpentry students and a brick walkway will be made with engraved, memorial/honorary bricks purchased to help fund the project. The project will cost approximately $15,000 to complete, and the memorial/honorary bricks may be purchased for $50. If you are interested in purchasing a brick, contact Central High School for an order form. Your donations are greatly appreciated. As funds come in from these donations, we will be able to purchase materials and move forward with our projects. The laying of the bricks will be one of the final items to be done in this process. CHS Hosts College Night Central High School hosted an Educational Credit Management Corporation (ECMC) College Night on Thursday, November 12, It began at 6:00 p.m. in the cafeteria with pizza and drinks. Ashley Woodard, Sr. Assistant Director of Admissions from Longwood University, Paul Farrar, II Southside Region Tobacco Scholarship Coordinator, and Sandra Bacon, Financial Aid Specialist from Southside Virginia Community College spoke to students and parents. All of these representatives had lots of tips and information regarding college admission, applying for financial aid, and applying for schol- arships. At the conclusion of the presentation there was a drawing for three $500 scholarships offered through Educational Credit Management Corporation. Congratulations to Z. Rainey, M. Hall, and C. Davis who won the three $500 scholarships. CHS Kindness Matters Club At Work! Sometimes it is better to be kind than to be right. We do not need an intelligent mind that speaks, but a heart that listens." Kindness matters!!
4 Page 4 JROTC Students Attend Military Ball On November 21, 2015, Central High School s JROTC along with Nottoway High School s JROTC participated in a Military Ball at the Nottoway River Country Club. Several honored guests attended and the Commander for the VFW Amelia organization was the keynote speaker for the event. Students enjoyed a dinner prepared by Mrs. Hipps-Clark and her volunteers and students and dinner was provided by the BLISS organization. Off Campus Dual Enrollment Students Learn Skills, Certifications, and Knowledge Several Central High School students attend dual enrollment classes at Lake Country Advanced Knowledge Center (SVCC) in South Hill. These students attend classes for High Performance Technology, Welding, and HVAC. Students earn college credit while earning high school credit for these courses. Studies show that these areas are showing growth in job outlook predictions and there are actually shortages of Welders and HVAC technicians now. Students taking these classes are taught by instructors who are certified in those fields and they are learning many hands on skills that they may use for future employment. Students are transported to the center via a Lunenburg County Public Schools school bus and arrive back at Central High School in time to complete two classes each day. Students who complete the entire program they are attending at Lake Country Advanced Knowledge Center may earn a Career Studies Certificate from Southside Virginia Community College.
5 Pride! Page 5 Our teachers, staff, and students show spirit every day and make us proud! Teacher of the Month Program A Teacher of the Month program has been implemented at Central High School. Teachers are nominated and selected by staff and students each month. The chosen teacher receives a $20 gift card to Wal- Mart, is featured in a display case next to the cafeteria and on our Facebook and Web pages, and has a designated Teacher of the Month parking space. The program has been well received and teachers look forward to seeing who will be the next Teacher of the Month. November Maurice Ellis Band Teacher Maurice Ellis is the Teacher of the Month for November. Mr. Ellis graduated from Longwood University in 2009 with a bachelor s degree in music education. He has devoted his energy into building the band enrollment and his efforts are obvious when you watch his award winning band perform. He currently teaches middle and high band classes; he leads the marching band, pep band, jazz band, and sax quintet. Mr. Ellis keeps his students motivated with humor and push-ups. Mr. Ellis would like all students to know if there s a will, there s a way. Congratulations Mr. Ellis! Spirit on the Loose at Central High School Bonfire Style! *Photo Courtesy of Brian Nowlin/Southside Messenger A Bonfire was held to kick off the play offs for the Charger Football team. Students, staff, and community members enjoyed listening to the cheerleaders cheer, the band perform, the students cheer, etc. as they stood around the bonfire. The night air was filled with excitement and smiles and enthusiasm was evident on the faces of individuals throughout the crowd. The football team closed a successful season by making it to the region semi finals and finishing with a 9 and 4 record. Central High School is very proud of the players and coaches. Charger Pride!
6 Page 6 Pride! Marching Chargers Take Home Two 1st Place Awards The Marching Chargers marching band - directed by Maurice Ellis - has been busy participating in many local parades during December. The group was awarded 1st Place Band and Auxiliary in the Crewe Christmas Parades and 1st Place Band in the Blackstone Christmas Parade. These students practice every day after school and participate in games and competitions, as well as concerts and programs. Their hard work and dedication has allowed them to grow in numbers, improve in performances, and thrive under Mr. Ellis leadership. Congratulations to these talented young people and Mr. Ellis. Central High School is very proud of our Band! Students Meet Zeus & Titan Trained VA State Police Dogs On Tuesday, November 24 th, Trooper W. L. Blount and Trooper D. B. Meeks with Virginia State Police provided a safety talk and K-9 informational session for the students in the Administration of Justice Class. After the safety talk and informational session, the students matriculated outside and viewed a patrol dog demonstration that included obedience training with Titan as well as bite work with Zeus. Students were amazed at how fast the dogs apprehended and took down the perpetrator during the demonstration. Trooper Blount was in the bite suit. Ruriteens There To Lend A Helping Hand Club members spent eight hours on Saturday, November 14 raking leaves in the yards of three Victoria residences. They even received help from some non club members from LMS and CHS. The volunteers gathered over 60 bags of leaves for the fall clean-up organized by club president Cara Williams.
