3 Texas Sea Grant is grateful for the volunteers and sponsors who spent many hours practicing, planning, writing and reviewing questions to make the Loggerhead Challenge possible. We would like to especially acknowledge the community spirit shown by The University of Texas Marine Science Institute. The Texas Sea Grant College Program s mission is to improve the understanding, wise use and stewardship of Texas coastal and marine resources. Texas Sea Grant is a unique partnership that unites the resources of the federal government, the State of Texas and universities across the state to create knowledge, tools, products and services that benefit the economy, the environment and the citizens of Texas. Hands-on educational cruises on Corpus Christi Bay aboard Texas Sea Grant s R/V Karma. For information, to book a cruise or to check on costs and availability, contact us: Telephone: (361) or (361) Fax: (361) floatingclassroom@seagrant.tamu.edu Thank You! Texas Sea Grant College Program: Science At Work For Texans Welcome to the Loggerhead Challenge Welcome to the 2013 National Ocean Sciences Bowl (NOSB) competition at The University of Texas Marine Science Institute in Port Aransas. The Texas Sea Grant College Program is pleased to have the opportunity to host the 2013 NOSB regional competition, and we are excited about having 9 teams competing this year. Sea Grant is dedicated to the wise use and conservation of marine resources, and we provide useful information on marine science to the public, including students from pre-school through higher education. NOSB provides an opportunity for high school students in our state to demonstrate their knowledge of the sea, which, as all the contestants now know, covers some 70 percent of the surface of our planet. On behalf of the faculty, staff and student volunteers from The University of Texas Marine Science Institute, Texas A&M University in College Station, and Texas Sea Grant, we congratulate the contestants for their hard work in preparing for this competition and the coaches for their dedication. We know that the winning team will represent our state well in the national competition. Let the games begin! Terrie Looney NOSB Regional Coordinator Dr. Wes Tunnell Sportsmanship Award The Loggerhead Challenge is proud to present its sportsmanship award in honor of Dr. Wes Tunnell, a scientist who is renowned as much for his integrity, honesty and work ethic as he is for his expansive body of research. The Dr. Wes Tunnell Sportsmanship Award is given to the team judged to best embody the spirit of earnest competition while demonstrating exemplary decorum. Tunnell, associate director of the Harte Research Institute for Gulf of Mexico Studies, has been a fixture in marine research for more than 35 years. He is a broadly trained marine biologist/ecologist whose studies include coral reefs, coastal ecology, molluscan distribution and ecology, oil spill impacts, brachiopods, colonial waterbirds, and vertebrate fossils from the seabed. In the mid-1980s, Tunnell founded the Center for Coastal Studies, the first research center at what was then Corpus Christi State University (now Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi). The success and standing of the Center for Coastal Studies within the marine research community was a major factor in philanthropist Ed Harte s decision to donate $46 million to TAMUCC in 2000 to create the Harte Research Institute for Gulf of Mexico Studies. 12 1

Riviere, who provided the team trophies, grew up in the Southeast where he enjoyed all that the region has to offer outdoors. Loving the water, he joined the U.S. Navy straight out of high school and became a Rescue Swimmer on both coasts. Michael has always enjoyed art forms from different painting mediums, technical drawing, metal work and recently finding and carving driftwood, which combines his favorite things kayaking the area s waterways and enjoying Mother Nature with his desire to create something for others to enjoy. Michelangelo said about his sculptures, The idea is there, locked inside, and all you have to do is remove the excess stone, Riviere says. People say that I m an artist. That usually makes me laugh because I don t agree at all! Mother Nature is the real artist. She shapes, colors and textures the driftwood before she lets me find it along the water s edge. I m just a simple man enjoying Mother Nature s Art Museum with just a hint of talent and some tools! What people think is my artwork, is actually what She has given to me to pass on to you. So the next time you find yourself enjoying that sea turtle, dolphin or whale shaped from a unique piece of driftwood, thank Mother Nature for all of Her talent and hard work! Barr, who created the individual trophies, is from Woodville, Texas. She and her husband create custom scroll saw designs from locally grown wood. Her Loggerhead Challenge trophies are made from East Texas Magnolia wood.
