Box 96, San Felipe, TX Organizational Profile The Friends of the San Felipe de Austin State Historic Site is a private non-profit, 501(c)(3) corporation whose mission is to support the Texas Historical Commission (THC) in the preservation and development of the San Felipe de Austin SHS. San Felipe History: Between 1823 and 1836, San Felipe de Austin served as the headquarters and capital of Stephen F. Austin s Colony, the first and most successful American colony in Mexicanowned Texas. The town was the seat of local government for the colony, and hosted the Conventions of 1832, 1833 and 1835 that served as important stepping stones toward Texas' declaration of independence from Mexico in At its zenith it was the second largest town in Texas, but was burned during the Mexican invasion of Texas in the spring of Friends Organization: The Friends of the San Felipe de Austin SHS date back to 1928 when the San Felipe Park Association was formed to preserve the historic townsite. This all-volunteer organization has been hosting the "Father of Texas Celebration" at the historic site since at least The Friends moved and restored the 1840s Josey Store building to the site in 1970 and operated the Josey Store Museum and the historic site under a lease from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department until With the transfer of the historic site to the Texas Historical Commission, our volunteer group was reorganized, renamed, and dedicated to supporting the THC s development of the site. Officers and Board: Current Board Members include Austin County Judge Carolyn Bilski; San Felipe Mayor Bobby Byars, Attorney Carl Clover; Judge Oliver Kitzman; Steven Kutra (Treasurer); Realtor Frank Monk; Michael Moore (President); Florence Sims; Chamber Executive Peggy Spradley (Secretary); and Fred Strauss (Vice-President). Previous Accomplishments: Led a multi-year archeological project on private lands surrounding the State Historic Site Conservation of Stephen F. Austin s desk, now on loan to the Bullock Museum in Austin until a new visitor center is built at San Felipe Funding for printing history program development Assisting the THC to acquire lands that comprised the historic San Felipe townsite Annual public event commemorating the birthday of Stephen F. Austin Objectives and Uses for Donated Funds: Reproduce the 1830s printing press of Gail Borden s Telegraph and Texas Register Install an exhibit on San Felipe s history at the Stephen F. Austin Golf Course Develop programs on the history of surveying of Austin Colony lands Assist the THC to plan and fund a new museum/visitor center at the site Help plan and fund archeological investigations of the townsite and its 1836 destruction. Recruit and train volunteers to give tours and programs in support of the THC staff

5 The Texas Historical Commission and San Felipe de Austin SHS Missions The Texas Historical Commission s (THC) mission is to protect and preserve the state s historic and pre-historic resources for the use, enjoyment and economic benefit of present and future generations. San Felipe de Austin State Historic Site is committed to preserving historic resources that tell the stories of colonial San Felipe de Austin. This site strives for a rich interpretation of Stephen F. Austin s legacy by sharing the unique, authentic and diverse stories of this historic town site. Texans and visitors to our state will be inspired by the struggles of colonization and the march to Texas independence. Site History In 1928 the local community established a memorial park on the grounds near Commerce Square. The Town of San Felipe donated this 17-acre site, along with 657 acres for a recreational park, to the State of Texas in The sites were collectively known as Stephen F. Austin State Park. In 2008, the management of the historic site was transferred to the THC and the 17-acre property was renamed San Felipe de Austin State Historic Site. Since that transfer, the THC has undertaken a number of projects to improve the site including the addition of outdoor exhibit panels, the opening of an interim visitor center and gift shop inside the historic JJ Josey Store building (staffed Tuesday-Sunday each week), conservation of the Centennial bronze statue of Stephen F. Austin and other monuments and plans for future archeological investigations. With the October 2012 acquisition of an additional 70-acre tract that includes a sizable footprint of the platted colonial town, the THC is preparing for a major expansion to improve the historic site. A new visitor center/museum will provide for the display of significant artifacts that will share the stories of Austin s Colony through engaging, modern exhibits. THC Organizational Structure San Felipe de Austin State Historic Site is part of the Historic Sites Division of the THC. The division oversees 20 properties classified either as house museums or militaryarcheological sites. The division director for Historic Sites is Donna Williams and the Military/Archeological Sites Supervisor is Brett Cruse, a professionally trained archeologist. The division also includes a lead architect and project assistants, an interpretive planning specialist, a chief curator and an archeological collections specialist. Local staffers include Site Manager Bryan McAuley, Visitor Services and Office Manager Shelley Wong, and Tour Guide Bethanie DePalermo.

Austin Golf Course San Felipe, Texas Help us theme the golf course with a lesson in early Texas history, and showcase your commitment to Texas history to thousands of players annually. The Friends of the San Felipe de Austin State Historic Site and the Stephen F. Austin Golf Course are partnering to develop an exhibit at each of the 18 holes of the golf course on interesting facts from San Felipe s important history. San Felipe de Austin served as the only Texas hometown of Stephen F. Austin. The town served as capital for empresario colonies and the independence-seeking Texans of Burned to the ground during the Runaway Scrape, San Felipe s significant history deserves more widespread awareness. A few samples of the exhibit panels to be fabricated Each panel will be 24 by 36 inches and mounted near a tee box at the Stephen F. Austin Golf Course. Exhibit sponsorships will run for 5 years. Exhibit sponsors will be acknowledged on each panel. Exhibit sponsorships are $1,500 and include costs to design, fabricate, and install the exhibit panels and maintain or replace them for the five-year period of the sponsorship.
