1 June 2014 Issue 68 Welcome to this edition of the GP Practice Newsletter which gives news and up-dates from us. We hope that all the staff within your Practice will find this useful. State-of-the-art Facility Will Transform Treatment for Patients A state-of-the-art 6 million theatre facility will soon accept its first patient at Manchester Royal Infirmary. The new hybrid endovascular theatre suite is set to transform the treatment of Manchester patients undergoing cardiovascular (heart and circulatory system) operations. The hybrid suite will enable new innovative techniques and treatments to be carried out that are not currently possible, as well as provide better facilities where existing techniques can be performed more efficiently and safely. The suite consists of two hybrid theatres equipped with advanced technology, including a robotic C-arm with the ability to scan patients during surgery, allowing surgeons to perform delicate, minimally invasive procedures with high definition imaging. The improved imaging technology minimises the use of contrast dye needed to illuminate an area during surgery, increasing patient safety and efficiency. Mr David Murray, Consultant Vascular Surgeon at Manchester Royal Infirmary said: This facility will be a fantastic benefit to the people of Manchester and the North West. It will allow us to perform complex procedures in a safer environment and introduce innovative techniques that are currently not possible. Minimally invasive treatments will allow patients to have safer surgery and recover much faster. This really is the cutting edge of technology and we are very excited about the future. The new hybrid suite will be used primarily for vascular and cardiac surgery but will also be used for other specialties such as urology and major trauma. Saint Mary s Hospital to deliver First in the UK Developmental Care Programme for Neonatal Babies Saint Mary's Hospital provides world class services to women and children across the Greater Manchester area. As a Trust that continuously improves its' services it is also now the first hospital in the UK to deliver the internationally renowned Philips 'Wee-care programme' in the neonatal unit. The eighteen-month quality improvement programme has already had successes in Europe and across the USA, and will now be developed in 1
2 Manchester. The new-born intensive care unit has already successfully implemented Baby Friendly and Best Beginnings initiatives in recent years, and the 'Wee-care' programme is the latest development tool that they have adopted to ensure they are striving to enhance the care they provide. The developmental care programme aims to minimise the potential detrimental effects that are sometimes the result of a prolonged stay in intensive care. Areas such as positioning and handling of the babies will all be addressed, and significant positive outcomes are anticipated including strengthening breastfeeding rates and improving noise and light levels that newborns are exposed to. The official launch of the Anthony Nolan cord collection centre took place at Saint Mary s Hospital this month, letting new mums in Manchester know that they now have the opportunity to give life twice in one day, by donating their umbilical cord blood to someone in desperate need of a stem cell transplant. The new collection centre based at Saint Mary s is the result of intense campaigning by local people including the late Paul Goggins MP and the Solomon family. The centre, which started accepting donations a few weeks ago, had already received four donations by the time the launch began last Thursday, 5 th June. To date they ve received well over 100, with over 50 mums signed up ready to donate when they deliver. The process is simple, does not interfere with the birth at all, and many women say they didn t even know that the cord collector was in the room.
