2 FOREWORD Welcome FOREWORD Thank you for considering Mid Yorkshire as a place to work. We are nearing the end of a three programme to transform our hospital services making it an exciting time to come and join the team. We are a large acute and community provider serving the populations of Wakefield and North Kirklees from Pinderfields, Pontefract and Dewsbury Hospitals. Our plans will see us centralising urgent, emergency and complex care at Pinderfields Hospital and developing our Dewsbury and Pontefract sites into centres for elective care and diagnostics. This will give new consultants a unique opportunity to shape their services making them fit for the future whilst embracing our care closer to home commitment. Hopefully in here you will find all the information you need about the post for which you are applying, the Trust and this beautiful area of Yorkshire. 3 HISTORY OF THE TRUST HISTORY OF THE TRUST The Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust is a large acute trust with an annual income of 500 million, employing more than 8,000 staff and serving around half a million people. The vast majority of our income comes from our local Clinical Commissioning Groups (Wakefield and North Kirklees). Since it was established in April 2002, the Trust has provided mainly hospital services. In 2010 we also started to provide a wide range of community services in the borough of Wakefield to become an integrated care organisation for local people. Nurses Station Pontefract 1966

4 BEING A PART OF THE FUTURE BEING A PART OF THE FUTURE As a Trust we are really proud to be playing a part in shaping the future of health care through our active participation in four of the fifty vanguard sites which have been identified nationally. These are: West Wakefield Health and Wellbeing Ltd Multi-specialty Community Provider Vanguard Working Together Partnership Acute Care Collaboration Vanguard West Yorkshire Healthy Futures Urgent and Emergency Care Vanguard Wakefield Connecting Care Enhanced Care in Care Homes Vanguard Each site takes a lead on the development of new care models, as set out in the NHS Five Year Forward View, which act as the blueprints for the NHS moving forward. In addition the Trust is a key player in other collaborative arrangements including; the West Yorkshire Association of Acute Trusts and individual partnerships on a trust to trust level with Barnsley Foundation Trust and Calderdale & Huddersfield Foundation Trust.

5 RESEARCH RESEARCH The experienced research team at The Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust supports the Trust s ambition for excellence. It is committed to high quality research to improve patient outcomes and contributes to the clinical knowledge base. Research embeds innovation within the Trust, providing opportunities for development and career progression. It sponsors a number of trials, hosts research grant awards and has a broad portfolio of activity, each year approving around 60 new studies. Clinical specialties with a constant level of research activity include; Critical Care, Diabetes, Haematology, Oncology, Ophthalmology, Paediatrics, Rheumatology, Stroke, Urology, and Women s Services. As a team it works closely with academic institutions, regional and national support organisations and also collaborates with local pharmacy, pathology and radiology teams to develop studies and provide support to colleagues to develop their ideas. The majority of research activity is peer-reviewed, funded externally, and adopted by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR). 6 TRAINING AND EDUCATION TRAINING AND EDUCATION The Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust is a multi-award winning Associated Teaching Trust contracted to deliver undergraduate and postgraduate medical education on behalf of The University of Leeds - Leeds Institute of Medical Education; Health Education Yorkshire and the Humber and The University of Sheffield - The Medical School. The Trust is committed to providing education and training opportunities which are; focussed on improving patient care, relevant to delegates, innovative and highly interactive and in many cases fully multi-professional. In addition to delivering our contractual work the Medical Education and Simulation Hub (MESH) team positively encourages new faculty to join in with the work. For those doctors who are interested in teaching and developing their own educational events, there is an impressive range of simulation equipment, skills, support and enthusiasm within MESH to help you develop and deliver high quality training projects. The work of MESH is constantly evolving and information about some of the work already being delivered and developed can be found on the website The team is always happy to welcome and support new faculty. We are also able to support your learning with the onsite library at Pinderfields, which is for the use of all staff and holds a huge range of healthcare databases and electronic books available from home or work. The library also offers an expert literature search service to provide the information and evidence you need to support your clinical practice.

9 OUR HOSPITALS 2011 saw us complete a major hospital development programme, which involved opening new, state-of-theart hospitals in Wakefield (Pinderfields) and Pontefract. Patients now benefit from greater privacy and dignity. The buildings also include brightly lit atriums, spacious waiting areas and treatment rooms, landscaped spaces, new technology to help speed up care and attractive views from bedsides. Pontefract has been developed as a major elective orthopaedic centre and is also home to the Trust s first midwife led birthing unit. Pinderfields Hospital is a designated Major Trauma Unit and has a helicopter landing site close to the Emergency Department. The hospital is also home to the Yorkshire Regional Spinal Injuries Centre (YRSIC), one of 12 specialist spinal injury centres in the United Kingdom. The YRSIC has a commitment to providing life-long care to these individuals. In addition, we have a Regional Adults Burns Centre and Regional Children s Burn Unit based at Pinderfields. They serve a population of approximately 3.5 million people across West, North and East Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire, are serviced by 19 emergency departments and manage over 150 patients every year - often with major and life-threatening burns - and 1,800 outpatients. Dewsbury Hospital is also undergoing a transformation, with around 20m being spent on improvements and redevelopment. This has already provided the new Children s Assessment Unit and the midwife led unit. Future investments will fund newly upgraded medical wards, a new surgical ward - with dedicated beds for people who have had surgery to joints or bones - upgraded operating theatres in a new complex, increased outpatient clinics, new day case units, a new pathology lab, specialist diagnostic equipment and new office facilities. The 32 bed unit has a large catchment area, treating both male and female patients of all age groups from Yorkshire, Humberside and beyond, admitting approximately 120 newly injured patients each year.

As the name suggests, The Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust, is settled in the heart of Yorkshire, which has beautiful countryside and has been given the name God s own county. This means that there is plenty on offer to suit those who love the great outdoors; from the North Yorkshire Moors to the Yorkshire Dales and the stunning Yorkshire Sculpture Park. But if that s not for you then there are lots of fascinating towns, cities and cultural delights to explore. From mediaeval York to cosmopolitan Leeds you can brush up on your history whilst indulging in some retail therapy, or visit the Hepworth - the largest art gallery outside of London. The motorway network in Yorkshire provides easy routes to other parts of the UK and the train gets you to central London in less than two hours. There are also excellent state schools which have been rated Outstanding by Ofsted, as well as independent schools. 14 MID YORKS IN THE COMMUNITY MID YORKS IN THE COMMUNITY IN 2011, we took on a number of NHS community services previously managed by NHS Wakefield District (PCT). This was part of the Government s agenda to Transform Community Services and the requirement to provide care which is more joinedup with smooth transitions between care settings and organisations. The health and social care structure in Wakefield has one Clinical Commissioning Group (Wakefield CCG) and one Local Authority (Wakefield Metropolitan District Council) together with our Hospital Trust. There are currently 40 GP practices within six networks, aligned to three communityintegrated hubs. We deliver a range of community services including; specialist outreach services, adult & children s services, intermediate care, and community therapy. As part of Wakefield Health & Social Care Community we have been involved in significant transformation over the last eighteen months to integrate care. Wakefield was awarded two NHS England New Models of Care Vanguards, and we are participating in a third Vanguard for Urgent & Emergency Care across West Yorkshire. Wakefield is also part of the national Pioneers programme supporting only 25 pioneer sites to develop integrated models of care. This programme is supporting change and innovation at a local level with support from national experts. The objective of these programmes of work is to deliver an efficient and effective integrated service which ensures that patients achieve the best possible outcomes for themselves and their families, facilitated by coordinated services, provided as close to home as possible..
