Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust CANDIDATES ELECTION STATEMENTS Election to the Council of Governors Public: Trafford Please read carefully before casting your vote. Central Manchester University Hospital, NHS Foundation Trust (CMFT) is an integrated health, teaching, research & innovation hospitals group with a comprehensive range of services, extensive research portfolio and state-of-the-art facilities. Our Vision is: To be recognised internationally as leading healthcare; excelling in quality, safety, patient experience, research, innovation and teaching; dedicated to improving health and well-being for our diverse population Our organisational values underpin everything we do and we recognise how important the right attitude and behaviours are to delivering a positive patient and staff experience. Our core Values are: Pride, Respect, Empathy, Consideration, Compassion and Dignity. CMFT is committed to equality, diversity and inclusion of patients, carers, families, staff, members and the communities we serve. We believe that having an inclusive culture: by living our values; listening to all our people and respecting each other we will deliver our commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion. As part of this commitment, CMFT aims to have a Board and Governing Body whose membership reflects the diverse communities that we serve. We support our governing body in becoming more representative of the members and communities that we serve whether in respect of race, disability, gender, gender reassignment, age, sexual orientation, religion or belief, marriage and civil partnership, caring responsibility, social class and pregnancy and maternity. 2 Razi Ahmed My long 18 years working experience in health & social care services has given me an opportunity to acquire concept as how the system works. Following my retirement in 2013, I m involved working with Pennine Care NHS Foundation (Bowel Cancer Screening Team) & Central Manchester NHS PLACE Assessment team (choose Trafford General base). Currently, I m in the process of organising awareness programmes on different health issues for South East Asian communities in Manchester. All these have inspired me to stand for this forthcoming Governors election. Once elected, I ll consider the following issues to persue: a. As we are accountable to communities, we ensure that to engage all other communities (including minority groups) who find it difficult to access the services or often make their concerns/opinions through while the policies are formed. b. While this Foundation Trust being considered to be a world renowned centre for excellence in health care research, I shall try to advocate / volunteer to search for further information / examples around the globe (South Ease & Fareast countries) where the health care has excelled towards quality in care recently faster than predicted. This may have made an adverse impact in attracting people seeking health care from outside U.K. c. I m very passionate about preserving fundamental principles of NHS foundation. In spite of current economic constraints look at the possibility of brining back some of the previous facilities like A & E (to Trafford General). Razi Ahmed Nik Barstow I have been actively involved in public engagement in the NHS in Manchester for 25 years as a Community Health Council Chief Officer and then managing Local Involvement Networks and Healthwatch bodies. I work for a locally-based health charity. I have: Played a major role in the Oliver s Army campaign to save children s services at Trafford General in the 1990s Been active in the Save Trafford General Campaign Been a Labour Party member for 40 years and regularly write for Solidarity the weekly socialist newspaper. I am standing because, as a socialist, I believe: The NHS is something that shows us what an equal society based on co-operation not profit can achieve Our NHS is being cut back locally and nationally and being privatised - this should be stopped Foundation Trusts need to be brought to account they should co-operate with other NHS and social care services, not compete Services for people in Trafford have been undermined by downgrading Trafford General and cuts in social care. As a Governor I will: Oppose cuts to services Demand that the Trust works with others instead of behaving like a private business Work to make sure patients, carers and community views are heard and acted on Work to ensure that the Trust treats everyone equally and works actively to reduce health inequalities Campaign to end massive payments to private companies that resulted from the Private Finance Initiative Campaign for bringing our hospitals, community health and social care services together under democratic control. Political Party: Labour Party 2
Graham Hoy Photograph not received Born in Sale and married with 4 children, I am a graduate in Economics, from the University of Wales, Cardiff, with a Post Graduate Diploma. I work in advertising, as Managing Partner of my small media consultancy. As a long-standing member, I train regularly at the YMCA (Y Club) in Manchester. The synergy between fitness and health is a fascinating subject. In my business, effective communication and negotiating skills are of the essence and I have extensive experience in dealing with both clients and media, local and national. I have acted in an official capacity with various sporting institutions, including serving as manager, secretary, delegate and chair, and have experience of dealing with local councils and national governing bodies. I chair the Patient Participation Group of a GP surgery in Manchester serving a patient universe with a particularly diverse demographic. Our objective has been to improve the patient experience and in this we have had success. Our family has personal experience of various treatments at CMHT and elsewhere, from young children to elderly grandparents. I am aware of the strengths and weaknesses of the NHS. The NHS needs to change and improve; I believe this is possible without compromising the basic principles on which it was established. I believe that the NHS must be challenged; more importantly, I believe that the incumbent government must be challenged. I am not interested in maintaining the status quo. I believe I can help to improve patient outcomes. Dr Geoffrey Jessup I was surprised to be nominated for election to the Council of Governors of Central Manchester University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust to represent the public of Trafford, but wish to rise to the challenge. I am not over the hill, yet. I am 88 years of age. A widow living on my own. There are many people in my situation whom I can represent. I am active both volunteering and as a member of clubs and societies. I was a GP in Wythenshawe for 30+ years. I have experienced much illness latterly, as have many of my age; it is par for the course. There is much that we can do for one another, and perhaps we can do it through the Council. 3
Michael Moncaster I am ready to accept the Governors twin challenges: find out what members and the public collectively want and get assurance that the Trust can deliver. I believe I have the skills, integrity and motivation needed. My career was in the civil service as a physicist, so well-used to facts and figures and using subjective information. I developed people skills through staff management and a lot of interviewing. I am familiar with working to firm rules; the Nolan Principles reflect my personal values. On retiring I wanted to do things of immediate value to society, starting with voluntary work improving the local environment. Since coming to Trafford 9 years ago I began voluntary work in social care, including assessing care homes for dignity awards. After experience as a patient in three Central Manchester hospitals I joined the Trust, to return a little for the excellent care I had received. When the NHS scheme for assessing hospital care environments, PLACE, began I jumped at the chance. Through this I have learnt much about the Trust and have seen its work many times in 5 of its hospitals. Recently I started helping at weekly Activity Groups for people living with dementia. I am a Dementia Friend and a Dignity Champion, trained in Safeguarding Adults, Mental Capacity Act, Deprivation of Liberty, and Dementia; my enhanced D&BS clearance for working with vulnerable adults is current. If elected Governor I will gladly commit time for all meetings and welcome further training as necessary. Irving Stewart Normie My name is Irving Normie I am an accountant and management consultant. I am a member of Trafford Health Watch my main interests are in mental health and the treatment of Dementia, and making sure all patients have the best possible care both inside and outside Hospital. I am conscientious in all my undertakings and make informed decisions having heard both sides of the of the arguement. I am discreat and treat all people with respect in matters of colour race or creed. I want people to have the best possible treatment I feel people can come to me with their concerns which I will try to sort out to their entire satisfaction. 4 Please see over
Cheryl Rivkin I retired from my role as Clinical Director for Manchester Community Dental Services in CMFT in September 2014 and embarked on a part-time Course in Counselling Psychology at Keele University to train as a counsellor. I am standing for election as a governor as I feel that I would be able to use my knowledge, enthusiasm, commitment and considerable experience in the NHS to serve the Trust and its members. I was born in Manchester where I trained as a dentist. As Head of a city-wide specialist service for children and adults who are unable to access care in the General Dental Services due to their additional needs, I had responsibility for the delivery of clinic-based and domiciliary dental care for these members of the community. I have extensive experience in working with vulnerable people of all ages and priority groups, their families or carers, and also a broad range of stakeholders. I also worked as a Specialist in Paediatric Dentistry at the Children s Hospital until retirement. The successful incorporation of Community Services into CMFT has given the opportunity for even closer working relationships between the hospitals and local services. As a public governor with first-hand knowledge of both areas and a commitment to equal access to quality care and improved patient experience, delivered by a team approach, I feel that I would be able to fully represent member s interests and make a useful contribution to the development of Trust plans for integrated care for the benefit of all. Greg Suligowski I m passionate about the services our NHS delivers and as a resident of Trafford, particularly those the Central Manchester University Hospital Trust provides. As a patient of the Eye Hospital after my sight was saved there as a teenager and more recently as a parent experiencing the high quality, specialist antinatal/maternity care for my family at St Marys and Wythenshawe hospitals, I m keen to help support the key role the Trust plays in our community. I m standing for election as I want to give something back to an organisation that has given me so much and lend my professional knowledge and skills to helping it develop in the future. In my working life, I m a senior leader for a housing trust, responsible for all aspects of customer care. Working on behalf our communities is something I do on a daily basis. Prior to this role my background has been in customer service and stakeholder management, giving me the analytical skills to look at end to end experiences from a customer (patients) point of view and using my communication skills to challenge and improve processes. I feel these skills would be of great use to the Trust in developing new and existing service such as PALS. As a Governor, my focus would be on ensuring that the Trust continues to provide high quality care, ensuring patients voices of heard and that in these challenging times the organisation continues to play a positive role in our community. 5
Christine Turner Dear Fellow Member, I hope that you will support me in becoming a public governor with the Central Manchester University Hospitals Foundation Trust. I have extensive experience of working within the health care sector. I am a retired qualified nurse with 39 years experience. I have a B.Sc and an M.Sc in Nursing Studies that I completed whilst working and bringing up two children. I am passionate about good quality patient care and believe that a good experience when visiting or staying in hospital is everyone s right. I was a local councillor in Trafford for eight years, so I have experience of engaging with the public and representing their interests. I also have experience of holding organisations to account, as I am a Board Member of Age UK Trafford. If elected I will bring a lot of enthusiasm to the role, I am honest, reliable and have a good work ethic. Political Party: Conservative Party Jordan Tyms I was born and bred in Timperley and now live in Altrincham and I am proud of our town and the borough of Trafford. We have some of the best schools facilities, sports teams and national parks, why should healthcare be any different? We deserve the best hospital facilities here in Trafford. I have worked in Social Housing for 11 years for Wythenshawe Community Housing Group and I am a Corporate member of the Chartered Institute of Housing. I am passionate about the importance of quality healthcare whether it is delivered in hospitals or in the community and the impact that that can have on the quality of peoples lives. I have first hand knowledge of the NHS as a patient, as a housing professional dealing with vulnerable tenants as well as leading on health projects with a range of different health partners as part of a health strategy and recently co-ordinated a Personal Best health programme as part of the successful Wythenshawe Games which encouraged people to improve their health and wellbeing. I am an Age friendly ambassador for Wythenshawe and have experience of working with and representing people of all ages. I would like to be given the opportunity to use my professional experience to serve the people of Trafford. I have a strong community spirit and want to assist the executive team and governors to ensure that the Trust continues to develop in what are difficult times. I would like your support to make this possible. 6
