Golden Jubilee National Hospital Leading Quality, Research and Innovation
W ELCOME to the Golden Jubilee National Hospital campus As Scotland s flagship health facility, the Golden Jubilee National Hospital specialises in cardiothoracic, orthopaedic and ophthalmic surgery as well as interventional and diagnostic cardiology. It is also the Scottish centre for heart transplantation and for patients with congenital cardiac and pulmonary vascular issues. A major diagnostic imaging centre, the hospital also has one of the largest concentrations of intensive care beds in the UK. The Golden Jubilee campus also includes a four star residential training and conference venue the adjoining Beardmore Hotel and Conference Centre. With audio visual links to the hospital s operating theatres, cardiac catheterisation laboratories and diagnostic imaging suites, the Beardmore is perfect for medical and clinical conferences, showcasing new devices, techniques and IT technology. Research takes forward the ways that healthcare professionals can provide improvements for patients and is also the way we give back real living benefits to everyone. That is why we created our onsite research arm the Beardmore Centre for Health Science. Currently undertaking ground-breaking research across all of our specialties, the Centre hosts a significant number of commercial and noncommercial research trials and studies. 2
W E INVEST IN COLLABORATION The Golden Jubilee National Hospital has been tasked by the Scottish Government to lead on Innovation and create International partnerships. We are continually looking for enterprise and technology partners as well as research and treatment project collaborations with health care providers across the globe. Working alongside our key partners, we are able to bring together a cross-section of knowledge and experience, allowing us to make positive strides in tackling some of the main healthcare challenges facing thousands of individuals every day. Currently, our key partners include universities and colleges, worldwide non profit organisations, the Scottish Government, and the Scottish and UK National Health Service. We also have medical and management links to key health organisations across the globe. In addition to our global commercial research partners, we are expanding our industry collaborations, offering a unique process to allow inventors, funders and clinicians to work together to create innovation in medical devices. It is crucial that we continue to receive support, donations and investments into new and innovative methods to keep up with the ever changing world of modern health care. We hope to build a new network of supporters, worldwide, to provide us with business and financial investment, helping us to realise our vision to be leaders in innovating healthcare. 3
Q UALITY Our vision is to be a world wide leader in quality, research and innovation for health. We already have a strong track record in the delivery of safe, effective and efficient health care. With excellent compliance results in patient safety and other assessments, as well as a patient satisfaction rate of 99%, our ongoing commitment to continually improve provides the cornerstone for us to deliver care that is second to none. Over the last few years, our Board has developed a unique Quality Framework which provides assurance that safe, effective, person centred care is our top priority and delivered at all times. For the Board this has been integrated into our everyday working and thinking. In summary, our Quality Framework has three workstreams: Board Governance Quality Indicators Values Based Workforce Our unique quality infrastructure allows us to not only internally measure improvements in delivery and outcomes of care, but provides us with the ability to judge our performance against other world leading sites. Delivering a quality service comes from the values we all work to uphold. Our organisational values set out the standards we work to and how we should behave to our patients, visitors, business partners and to each other. Supporting these values and more importantly, demonstrating them in everything we do and say helps us provide a caring, personal and quality service. 4 Our values are: Valuing dignity and respect A can do attitude Leading commitment to quality Understanding our responsibilities Effectively working together
R ESEARCH We deliver world-leading research, ensuring it is taken from bench to bedside to benefit patients. We firmly believe that research is crucial to health in two ways. Research activity helps us investigate, test out and develop responses to the challenges we face. It also improves the sum of our knowledge and understanding and can lead to improvements in healthcare quality, better outcomes and care for patients, and improved performance. Research projects are hosted relating to our clinical specialties including interventional cardiology, electrophysiology, pulmonary vascular disease, advanced heart failure, orthopaedics and anaesthetics. Researchers and clinicians from the Golden Jubilee National Hospital: are part of the team of scientists, cardiologists and heart surgeons participating in a 3.9m study into how to prevent the failure of heart bypass grafts; carried out a delayed stenting trial which suggested that waiting for a period of time before putting in a stent may improve clinical outcomes for patients experiencing a STEMI heart attack; published research which revealed that Computer Assisted Hip Arthroplasty could increase accuracy of the surgery by over 20 per cent, from 70 per cent to over 90 per cent; are part of the UK s first gene therapy trials for heart failure patients, called CUPID2 and SERCA2a, taking place in only two hospitals; and played a major role in the PRAMI trial over the past five years, finding evidence to suggest that preventative angioplasty following a heart attack has the potential to save the lives of thousands of patients every year. 5
I NNOVATION Health care systems across the world face their own challenges. To continue to meet patient expectations and provide quality care, we must constantly develop. Being creative thinkers, being innovative in the way we work, and implementing effective new ideas is an integral part of building a culture of improvement. We firmly believe that creativity comes from encouraging and supporting our staff to seek innovation in their work. The end product of this is better patient care. Every piece of new research, every new project, or every new strategy we undertake, we do it to make a difference to global health and wellbeing. The pioneering team at the Golden Jubilee National Hospital has been pivotal in leading ground-breaking surgery for heart disease and complex orthopaedic hip and knee replacements, as well as introducing different ways of delivering anaesthesia and providing interventional cardiology. Investment in Information Technology and wireless internet access means that patient data capture has never been simpler, allowing for improved decision making and outcomes for patients. In addition, the Golden Jubilee team has developed an innovative programme which allows medical students, trainee doctors and clinicians to practice surgical techniques on 3D models and animations. In the future, it could also be used to help patients understand their diagnosis and treatment options, through seeing a visual representation of what their treatment will involve. 6
The future of Innovation To continue to meet patient expectations and provide quality care, our Board is committed to thinking in different ways and doing different things. We encourage staff at all levels throughout the organisation to become creative thinkers, innovative in the way they work, and implement effective new ideas. This is central to building our culture of continuous improvement. Being creative and coming up with innovative ideas are linked, not only to our Board s five organisational Values, especially displaying a can do attitude at every opportunity, but also used as a way to demonstrate our commitment to providing safe, effective and person centred care. Some of the most ground breaking ideas are born out of issues encountered in day-to-day work and it is essential that staff are provided with the space, technology and support to undertake exciting new projects which lead to direct improvements for patients and service users. This could be anything from ground breaking medical research to some basic changes that help one area to run more effectively. Investment in innovation is essential to ensure that the needs and expectations of every patient are met, providing the highest possible standard of care to the patients of NHSScotland. 7
O UR SPECIALTIES Since our creation in 2002, the Golden Jubilee National Hospital Campus has grown significantly. Overall surgical activity has increased by over 900%, the Beardmore Hotel and Conference Centre is now Scotland s NHS and public sector venue of choice, and the Beardmore Centre for Health Science is hosting more research projects than ever before. World class heart and lung services Serving a population of five million, the Golden Jubilee National Hospital manages one of Europe s largest heart and lung centres. Our services include: all heart and lung surgery for the West of Scotland, including all bypasses, heart valve surgery and other complex procedures; Interventional cardiology services, including angioplasty, angiography, electrophysiology and complex pacemakers; the Scottish National Advanced Heart Failure Service, including the heart transplant unit; the Scottish Pulmonary Vascular Unit; and the Scottish Adult Congenital Cardiac Service. The hospital is also one of only two sites in the West of Scotland with an Optimal Reperfusion service. This service means that patients, whose heart attack is due to a blocked artery, will be transferred directly to our specialist centre, leading to better outcomes. According to the National Cardiac Benchmarking Collaborative, the Golden Jubilee National Hospital has consistently had the shortest door to balloon time in the UK for the treatment of these ST-elevated myocardial infarctions (STEMI). 8
The hospital s cardiac team delivers a world-class level of care and have been crucial to the increase in heart transplants carried out in Scotland, along with pioneering new treatments and procedures, including performing the first Right Anterior Thoracotomy in Scotland a minimally invasive heart valve replacement technique, which removes the need to open a patient s chest during surgery. The Golden Jubilee is also home to the busiest thoracic centre in the UK, primarily due to the number of major procedures, lung resections and mediastinoscopy/ mediastinotomy procedures carried out. The thoracic team has reduced hospital stays from six or seven days to just three or four through the introduction of minimally invasive keyhole surgeries, such as Video Assisted Thoracic Surgery (VATS). One of Europe s largest orthopaedic centres As one of Europe s largest and best known elective orthopaedic hospitals, the Golden Jubilee continues to expand and now carries out approximately 25% of all hip and knee replacements in Scotland. The hospital is now internationally renowned for the high volume and complexity of the cases undertaken. The pioneering multidisciplinary orthopaedic team introduced Enhanced Recovery for patients undergoing hip and knee replacements in Scotland. This safe, high quality, care allows patients to be mobile on the same day as their surgery, leading to the lowest length of stay for these procedures. The team is also leading the way in using technology and telehealth. As the first site in Scotland to use Computer Assisted Orthopaedic Surgery, the team can provide more accurate surgeries than ever before. The use of video links for follow-up care to those in rural locations has proven to be a safe, effective, alternative, allowing patients to access care from their local communities. 9
Scotland s largest provider of cataract procedures The Golden Jubilee National Hospital s Ophthalmology Department was established in 2007 as a specialist provider of high volume cataract surgery in line with the Scottish Government s commitment to the Treatment Time Guarantee. The service has continued to expand, recently pledging to undertake over 4,000 outpatient appointments and carry out 2,800 cataract surgeries every year. Following this expansion, the Golden Jubilee is now one of Scotland s largest ophthalmic units, carrying out at least 12% of all cataract operations in Scotland. The experienced team also provide outreach services to rural areas in the Scottish Highlands and the island of Orkney. 10
Award winning diagnostic imaging department Our award winning radiography department provides a comprehensive, state of the art diagnostic imaging service. The world-class service includes Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Computer Tomorgraphy (CT), bone densitometry, ultrasound and DEXA (dual energy x-ray absorptiometry) scanning alongside general x-ray for patients across Scotland. The hospital also has four Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratories (Cath Labs) which allow them to carry out specialist procedures for individuals suffering from complex heart conditions. Thanks to the national Picture Archiving Communications System (PACS), these images are able to be viewed instantly at all hospitals linked to the system, providing the highest possible standard of care for patients throughout the NHS in Scotland. 11
