11 Back to School Sarah Cartwright BA, RN, CAPA Region Five Regional Director Page 11 September is upon us, and that means back to school for most of the childrenfrom Kindergarten to College. Perhaps that means back to school for you, too, as you may be taking classes to increase your professional presence. I congratulate you as you pass on the love for learning to the next generation. Speaking of the next generation, autumn is the time recent graduates are newly licensed and eager to make a difference. I challenge each of you to take up the torch of mentorship and assist the development of our future PeriAnesthesia nurses. Each one of us has something to share, and together we can do great things. Learning never stops! As this quarter ramps up most components in Region 5 offer fall conferences. I have been excited to see the brochures for these varied offerings. They cover direct patient care with timely topics to documentation issues and professional development. What an array of learning opportunities. On the ASPAN website there are links to those components that have websites. I encourage you to go out onto ASPAN.org and look at your close components page; you may be able to attend their conferences, too! Most are 1 or 2 day conferences, and all offer contact hours. If your component offers a fall workshop please attend it! ASPAN is the premier source for PeriAnesthesia education, and your components help ensure that mission is complete! The Leadership Development Institute will be taking place in Kansas City, Missouri on September 6 th through 8 th. It will be a time where ASPAN leaders assist the component leaders by empowering them to rise up and meet the challenges ahead. Topics on how we think and lead, effective board meetings, professionalism, strategic planning, and practice standards to just name a few, will be offered. It will also give Region 5 leaders an opportunity to meet face-toface with each other as we navigate what works and where we optimize our components. November will find the mid-year board of directors meeting taking place. This is an opportunity for your regional leaders to bring any requests from the component members to the board. We are developing agenda items now, so please share with me any concerns you may have, I am interested in answering your questions or moving them up if I cannot.

12 Page 12 Research Diane Swintek, BSN, RN, CPAN Immediate Past President, CBSPAN Baltimore District RESEARCH... GATHERING THE EVIDENCE Each of us in our practice is providing patient care based on knowledge gained during our preparation to become a nurse. We know that learning does not stop when you leave the formal educational environment. The Districts within the Chesapeake Bay Society of PeriAnesthesia Nurses (CBSPAN) regularly offer members educational programs with the clear vision of maintaining safe, high quality, patient care. It is about finding the evidence that supports a patient care practice. Within CBSPAN many facilities have achieved Magnet designation. The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) has changed the Magnet model and is now requiring that we show Empirical Outcomes. The way to meet this model of nursing practice is clear. Nurses must engage in clinical research with demonstrable positive outcomes for patients. It all starts with a question and is followed by unearthing the answer. ANCC is looking for the bedside nurse to participate in nursing research. During the initial Magnet journey at my hospital, I was one of those nurses with a question and I went about gathering evidence to support my premise concerning monitoring the adult patient in a Phase 1 PACU. My question involved using the Mean Arterial Pressure (MAP) as an important indicator of hemodynamic stability in the adult post carotid endarterectomy patient. In a search of the literature I found that there are not many studies focused on the perianesthesia arena. I did find several articles referencing the use of the MAP to determine hemodynamic stability in the adult ICU patient. I was then able to engage with a nurse researcher from Australia to discuss the means of designing a study and data gathering tool to support my premise. My premise was built on identifying the patient at risk for adverse events by monitoring the MAP, and then providing the needed intervention prior to reaching a crisis point. By being aware of the optimal MAP for perfusion, the nurse is able to intervene before the patient becomes symptomatic. My study hit stumbling blocks and in the end I withdrew the study before it reached a viable conclusion. However, the experience taught me the more I learn about doing research the more I am excited about being able to contribute to the evidence of our nursing practice. In 2012 at the Representative Assembly the body voted to purchase access to Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) for all ASPAN members. JBI is an internationally recognized database of nursing literature and research. It is located in South Australia and is geared towards nurses and promoting evidence based recommendations, systematic reviews and best practices info sheets. This is exciting news! It has also meant an increase in member dues, but what we will gain and what our patients will gain from access to this service is tremendous. Our patients benefit when we enter the research arena because we are providing care based on the evidence. When we are asked why we use sequential compression devices (SCD) machines we respond that it is to promote the return of blood to the heart and help prevent blood clots. How do we know this information is true? Where is the evidence? Can we, the members of CBSPAN, gather and disseminate that evidence? Yes we can! That s what the regeneration of the CBSPAN Research committee is all about. We practice this way because we KNOW it is the best practice supported by the evidence. 13 Page 13 Baltimore District Beatrice Hazzard, MS, RN, CPAN President Baltimore District The start of our year is fast approaching. I am looking forward to the coming year and would like to encourage all of you to join us each month. The Baltimore district is planning many opportunities for our members from whole day conferences to monthly meetings in order to network with other perianesthesia nurses. Each month, with the exception of December and April, we will plan an educational offering hosted by local hospitals. Our first meeting will be hosted by Johns Hopkins Medical Center on Sept. 18 th. In October we will not hold a monthly meeting since we will be hosting the CBSPAN fall conference on October 26 th. Our theme this year will be Fill your Toolbox Today for the Challenges of Tomorrow. This year the conference will be held at Franklin Square Hospital. We have some great speakers planed and I hope you will join us for a great day of learning and networking. Hosting is a great way to assist CBSPAN in their mission and gather points for scholarships offered by our district and component. Please e- mail me if you are interested in hosting. This year will be my last as your president. I have enjoyed the opportunity to assist the component in their mission and goals as well as meeting and learning from each and every one of you. We are looking for interested members to step up into a board position this year. Joy Lazo will be assuming the president position in July 2014 and there are opportunities as treasurer, secretary and vise president/president elect. 14 Page 14 Eastern Shore District Susan Volk MSN, RN, CCRN, CPAN President Eastern Shore District The Eastern Shore District is preparing for a new year of perianesthesia knowledge and networking. A board meecng was held in August to plan the year s events. There will be six meecngs for the year with the first beginning in September. MeeCngs are also planned for November, January, March, May, and June. Members will have opportunices to take part in the Annual Fall Conference in BalCmore in October, an ASPAN seminar in BalCmore in February, and the ASPAN NaConal Conference in April. There has been a transicon in leadership for the ESD. Susan Volk is the new president, Ann Marie Stafford is the new vice president, Judy Pekasiewicz is the returning secretary, and Diz Brosmer is the new treasurer. Suellen Wilkins is the immediate past president and Kathy Jamison is the new chair for the EducaCon CommiSee. The blending of the new and past officers promises to be a fruirul endeavor for the district as we learn from one another. The Eastern Shore District of CBSPAN along with the local chapter of AORN is sponsoring their annual fundraising trip to New York on November 23. The cost of the trip is $40. Several buses leave from the Roxanna Cannon Arsht Surgicenter in Wilmington at 8:00 am and return around 8:30 pm. It is a wonderful opportunity to go to New York and see a show, go sightseeing, or shopping just before the holiday season. Maryann Sosnowski, nurse manager of the Wilmington Hospital PACU coordinates the event with Debbie Diebert from the ChrisCana OperaCng Room. The trip can always be counted on for a good Cme. InformaConal flyer is on the website.

16 Page 16 Margaret Young, BSN, MDiv, RN, CPAN, CAPA D.C. District President D.C. District The DC District concluded the pre- summer break with a half day seminar on bloodless medicine and easy ABG interpretacon. The seminar was held at Medstar Georgetown University Hospital, and was asended by perianesthesia nurses throughout the DC Chapter. Dick Verstraete RN, MA, CCRN and Donna Stanczak RN, MS, CCRN were the workshop presenters and did an outstanding job relaying percnent informacon relevant to the successful praccce of perianesthesia nursing. The Bloodless Medicine and Surgery Program (BMSP) at Medstar Georgetown University Hospital is designed to provide care for pacents who refuse transfusion therapy for religious or personal reasons. This approach is also applicable to all pacents at MGUH. Mr Verstraete, the Nurse Coordinator and navigator for the BMSP, explained in detail that the use of blood transfusion as a treatment opcon was not discarded, but transfusion therapy is being used wisely in an asempt to achieve the desired pacent outcome. ABG interpretacon is very valuable in the recovery of the postoperacve pacent who has under gone anesthesia. Donna Stanczak, Nurse Educator for the Surgical Intensive Care unit at MGUH, took the fear out of ABG interpretacon. Her skilled approach to teaching the basic steps of interpretacon was as easy as 1, 2, 3! Her presentacon included hands on demonstracon, allowing the nurses to praccce various ABG analyses for interpretacon. At the end of the session, it was obvious; everyone had a beser understanding of the steps to ABG interpretacon. Coming on September 28, 2013, the DC District will have another half day seminar at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda, Maryland. Check your s for details and SAVE THE DATE!!!

And once again, we are fortunate to have an abundance of activities to support our role of perianesthesia nurses: workshops, conferences, seminars. In addition there are fun activities, like the bus trip to NYC, as well as the chance to give back with the CBSPAN Heart Walk in D.C. Both of these activities offer the chance to make new friends and to network. And then I know some of our members are continuing and/or starting their school year as they journey on to further their education. I applaud you for that!
