5 FOREWORD Healthcare Made Practical (HMP) is excited to announce that this 2018 e-book edition of Chronic Wound Care: The Essentials (CWC:E) will serve as the official e-book of our Why Wound Care? (WWC) initiative. WWC is a campaign to encourage healthcare students, recent graduates, and faculty to consider the career opportunities for wound care specialists. Wound care is generally not as clearly defined or well-established as other healthcare specialties such as cardiology, oncology, neurology, etc. and all too often, curricala in schools of medicine, nursing, and physical therapy have limited room for wound prevention and care education, causing healthcare practitioners to fall into the field. To help address this disconnect, HMP launched the WWC initiative, which includes free educational resources for faculty and students. HMP has attracted a world-class advisory board of nurse and physician wound care experts to develop the educational content on the WWC website that faculty in nursing, medical, and other healthcare schools can incorporate into their curricula or assign for independent study. As a reader of this e-book, you have access to PDFs of all 25 chapters of CWC:E. By visiting the website, registered users can also view videos, download PowerPoint presentations focused on key wound care topics, and have complimentary access to multiple wound care resources. There is a pressing need for healthcare professionals to understand optimal wound prevention and chronic wound management strategies. The epidemics of diabetes and obesity, along with the demographics of our aging population, place millions of Americans at high risk for developing chronic wounds. We at HMP are committed to combating the personal and societal costs of chronic wounds and welcome the next generation of wound healers! Jeremy Bowden VP and Group Publisher, HMP Wound Care Division Peter Norris EVP, HMP XIII
6 PREFACE As we lose ourselves in the service of others, we discover our own lives and our own happiness. ~Dieter F. Uchtdorf We are delighted to bring you this e-book version of Chronic Wound Care: The Essentials. As the official e-book of the Why Wound Care? (WWC) initiative, this reference will now be available free of charge to all students, recent graduates, and faculty members across all healthcare disciplines who register on the WWC website ( We are grateful to the corporate sponsors and our publisher, Healthcare Made Practical (HMP) for generously supporting the WWC campaign and providing complimentary resources to registered users. The goal of WWC is to attract healthcare professionals across all disciplines to the wound care specialty, in order to meet the growing need for wound care specialists. The chapters in this e-book, written by thought leaders in wound care, can help you jump-start or advance your wound care career. Additional resources on the WWC website include basic & advanced PowerPoint presentations on key wound care topics; information about wound care careers, educational programs, and certification; videos, and more. We hope that you find this e-book to be an inspiration, and we wish you every success in answering the Call to Wound Prevention and Care!
