She is a professional consultant/trainer who has thirty years of mental health experience with a specialty in crisis intervention and working with at risk youth and their families. She is presently working for the Richard Hall CMHC of Somerset County as the Executive Director. She has overseen and delivered statewide training for the certification and recertification of psychiatric screeners for several years. She has also worked as the Traumatic Loss Coalition Coordinator in Somerset County, and currently maintains a Private Practice in Morristown, NJ. Course Objectives 1. Identify a minimum of four types of crises presented in children and adolescents. 2. Review the underlying dynamics of childhood psychiatric diagnoses, the NJ Child System of Care and challenges in working with this population. 3. Review skills to assist and improve interview techniques with children and adolescents. 4. Describe two ways how to facilitate and process grief in working with children and adolescents. 5. Discuss two common methods of assessment and intervention, while incorporating cultural aspects of working with children and adolescents. Statement of Purpose The Basic Screener Certification Training Series is mandated by the New Jersey Division of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS) as noted in the Screening and Screening and Outreach Standards N.J.A.C. 10:31 within which they note that Screener certification shall be granted to individuals who have completed the Division's screener certification course and who have passed the screener certification proficiency examination. Aligned with DMHAS s Wellness and Recovery Transformation Action Plan (December 2010), this training series focuses on the provision of services that are grounded in a recovery orientation, are welcoming, consumer and family driven, culturally competent, integrated and collaborative, evidence and/or best practice based, and works to eliminate stigma.
2 Assessment of Children Agenda 8:30a 9:00a Registration 9:00a 10:15a 10:15a 10:30a Break 10:30a 12:00p Discuss when working with children can be more challenging than adults, review definition of crisis as well as types of events, suicidal crises and complexities Overview of symptoms, characteristics and how childhood disorders develop and manifest 12:00p 1:00p Lunch (On your own) 1:00p 2:15p 2:15p 2:30p Break 2:30p 4:00p 4:00p Evaluations Discuss the needs and working with school staff, the screeners role, the interview process, postvention, overview of treatment planning and disposition options Review expressions of grief and the developmental model. Identify children at risk through small group exercises and grief reactions, review of warning signs, benefit of groups, core statistics, interventions and cultural considerations Professional Contact Hour Information (Certificate Fee: $20 - Do not send payment with registration) Participants must arrive on time and sign in. Participants may not be eligible for contact hours if they are not on time and present for the entire session. Participants must submit a completed evaluation and credit request form at the end of the program. Participants will receive a program-specific code at the end of the program. Partial credits will not be issued to participants arriving late or leaving early. Certificates will be ed within 3 weeks of receiving credit request form. Then turn RIGHT at the next traffic light onto Centennial Avenue. Make a RIGHT at the THIRD traffic light on Centennial Avenue. This road will also have a sign for Embassy Suites. (The building you pass before the light on your right side is.) Go to the STOP sign and make a RIGHT. The building to your right is. It is a white, one-story building. Park at the far end of the lot. Take 287 North to Exit # 8 - Possumtown Road/ Highland Park/Middlesex. Follow directions for From the South above. From the Northwest, take Route 80 east to 287. From the Northeast, take Route 80 west to 287. Please allow extra time as these routes experience frequently delays. From The East: Take Route 18 North through New Brunswick and follow signs on the Lynch Bridge to continue on Rt.18 After crossing the Lynch Bridge, take the exit for River Road, Piscataway, Highland Park. At the end of the ramp, turn right onto River Road. In about 3 miles, you will pass a Quick Check, River Road Tavern and a Gulf Gas station located at the traffic light at the intersection of River Road and Plainfield Avenue. Shortly after this light and before the next traffic light, bear RIGHT onto Centennial Avenue. Get in the left lane and make a left at the FIRST traffic light.
