1 First Friday Newsletter July 7, 2017 Volunteer Services - University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Volunteers recognized at 1,000 Hour Luncheon Mary-Ellen Lewis, Pat Hunsberger, Dan Stence, Sally Kruse, Jonah Heskje and Chief Medical Officer Teri Brennan Not pictured: Jinx Woolson The following volunteers were recognized at the Volunteer Services 1,000 Hour Luncheon on May 31, 2017: Sally Kruse reached an hour milestone of 20,000 hours of service at UIHC! Sally began volunteering in 1998 and has held a variety of volunteer positions. Sally was recognized for her 1,000 hour milestone in 2000, 5,000 hours in 2004, and her 15,000 hour contributions in Jinx Woolson is from Boone, Iowa and was honored for achieving her 5,000 hour milestone. Jinx is a baby hat knitter and was recognized for her 1,000 hour milestone in 2014.

2 The following volunteers were recognized for contributing 1,000+ volunteer hours: Jonah Heskje began volunteering in the summer of Jonah was the SLB Chairperson for the academic year, and had been a Leader Board member for the year. Jonah had previously volunteered in the Orthopaedics/Urology Unit, Epilepsy Monitoring Unit, Neurology Inpatient, as well as Physical Therapy Outpatient. Pat Hunsberger joined volunteer service in March of 2013 and has served as a Concierge Service volunteer, in the WRG, in the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center, and is also a baby hat knitter. Mary-Ellen Lewis has split her volunteer time between the Patients Library and as a Cherished Portraits Pager Angel since she joined the volunteer team in Dan Stence became a volunteer in June of 2014 and has volunteer in in the Patients Library, and is a current volunteer with the Volunteer Services Office, as well as Concierge Services. Volunteer News Volunteer Service Office Remodel is Complete Please stop by and visit us in our more open, light-filled, and welcoming space! The individuals that have been to our office have commented that the space feels bigger, so much brighter, and more welcoming. We hope that you have a similar experience when you visit us!

3 Patient & Family Stories From the Mother Baby Care Unit: "I had an AMAZING shift today! I figured out how to use the voalte phones - I found the login info! And then I spent my shift helping a lovely women. We had a great conversation and when I was leaving she thanked me for taking such great care of her and told me that I will make a great nurse someday! Made my day!" From 6JC: "Volunteering was great today! I got to complete a lot of different tasks (linens, sharps, sanitation, O2 tanks, etc.). I had a good amount of interaction with patients, too. Just asking "can I get you anything else?" is a great way to connect with patients!" From the Child/Adolescent Psych Unit: "Today I spent most of the shift outside with the patients on the basketball court. Then we went inside and did some watercolor. I love talking and getting to know everyone's unique personalities!" Getting to Know You The Volunteer Services Office team is a large group of individuals, all of whom have a significant role in supporting volunteers, staff, businesses, and patient and family programs. To help make introductions, each month a question will be posed to these full-time staff, hourly staff, and volunteers, as an opportunity for YOU to get to know US better.
