1 Health care services for Asylum Seekers in Sheffield Information Leaflet The Clover Group Practice is a directly managed multidisciplinary NHS practice. It is managed by and is accountable for its systems and governance to Sheffield Health and Social Care NHS Foundation Trust. Health Services All refugees and asylum seekers can use the state funded National Health Service (NHS). You do not have to pay to receive NHS Primary Care. You do not need a passport to register. If you have any documentation take it with you. To obtain medicines, dental care or optical care you need to show your HC2 form.
2 Doctors (General Practitioners) In the United Kingdom, doctors are called GP s (General Practitioner s) and work in surgeries or health centres. You will need to speak to your GP first about any health problems. It is therefore important that you register with a GP. Consultations are confidential. Your doctor will not give information about you without your consent. Your housing provider will help you register with a GP. You do not need to show any documentation but you should bring your ARC ID card to the registration appointment General Practitioners hold the key to a range of services including: Treatment and advice on most health problems Hospital referral Referral to mental health services Referral to community health services (District Nurses, Health Visitors etc.) Most health problems are treated by GP s in their practices. When you register with a new GP you may be invited by the surgery for a routine health check. This is normally done by the practice nurse or the nurse working with your housing provider. Take any documentation regarding your health with you. E.g. current medication, immunisation history, personal medical record and ARC Card.

The Mulberry Practice 1 Mulberry Street Sheffield S1 2PJ Opening hours Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday* Friday 8.30am 6.00pm 8.30am 6.00pm 8.30am 6.00pm 8.30am 4.30pm 8.30am 6.00pm *On Thursdays the telephones are diverted to the GP Collaborative from 1pm 6pm as we currently do not provide clinics on a Thursday afternoon. If you need to see a doctor at this time you should telephone Reception is open for prescription and appointment services.
4 Welcome to Sheffield and to The Mulberry Practice While you are in Sheffield and your application is being processed, we will provide you with any health care you may need. The doctors and nurses are there to look after your health problems and needs. If you need help with letters or other non health related problems the receptionist can sometimes deal with these therefore you do not need to see a doctor or a nurse. We have drop in clinics most days so check with reception what time these start. When you arrive for a drop in clinic you will have your name put down and you have to sit and wait your turn, this is not a booked appointment. We work on an appointment system for our GP appointments. This allows us to book interpreters. You will be given a time and date to attend the clinic. If you cannot attend make sure you ring and cancel your appointment so someone else can use your appointment. Interpreters are very expensive. If you do not attend your appointment and do not cancel we will have to consider whether we can book an interpreter for your next appointment. If you are given regular medication and need a repeat prescription you need to come into clinic or contact us by telephone on medication you require and say which Your prescription will be ready for collection from the clinic 1 day later (3 days if a weekend is included) Please remember to ask for your prescription before you have finished your medication. If there is anything you are unsure about please ask Reception staff first as generally they will be able to deal with enquiries.

9 Information about Health Problems Tuberculosis (TB) We offer a blood test to see if you have ever come into contact with TB. Even if you currently feel well. How is TB treated? TB is curable and the treatment is with medicines and tablets. The treatment will last for 6 months, and sometimes longer. It is of the utmost importance that once a patient starts anti TB treatment he or she must continue to take the medicine every day until the doctor says they can stop. Regular clinic appointments are also important. If people have concerns or queries about TB, about BCG vaccination, or wish to refer someone to the service, please contact the specialist nurse for TB, Andy Naisby who is based at the Chest Clinic at the Northern General Hospital Blood Borne Virus Hepatitis B & C If you know you have Hepatitis B or Hepatitis C (blood borne virus that affects the liver) you should tell your doctor or nurse and dentist. Family members will usually be offered a test and can be given a vaccination for Hepatitis B. HIV People who are HIV positive should discuss this with their doctor or nurse. If you are concerned about HIV or any sexually transmitted illness you can also visit or phone the Genito-Urinary clinic at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital for a confidential appointment. They will provide an interpreter if required. To attend clinic you can either book an appointment by calling clinic or attending the walk-in and wait service on weekday mornings between 9am and 11am.
