1 Kent Surrey Sussex Academic Health Science Network Musculoskeletal Health and Care across the Pathway: A Regional Priority Tuesday 28 th November 2017, The Arora Hotel, Crawley Nigel Acheson MD PGCert (Patient Safety and Risk Management) FRCOG, Regional Medical Director and Higher Level Responsible Officer (South), NHS England Nigel is Regional Medical Director and Higher Level Responsible Officer for the South Region of NHS England. A Consultant Gynaecological Oncologist since 2002, Nigel has worked previously in the Gynaecological Cancer Centres at Birmingham Women s Hospital and the Royal Devon and Exeter (RD&E) Hospital in Exeter. With an active interest in both patient safety and improvement strategies, Nigel completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Patient Safety and Risk Management and was a National Advisor and Clinical Lead to the Department of Health s Enhanced Recovery Partnership Programme. Nigel was formerly the Medical Director for the Peninsula Cancer Network in the South West of England, and Hon Sec of the British Gynaecological Cancer Society. Professor Anthony Woolf, Chair of the Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Alliance (ARMA) As well as the Chair of (ARMA), Tony is also Honorary Professor of Rheumatology, University of Exeter Medical School, and Plymouth Peninsula Medical and Dental College, and Clinical Director of the NHS National Institute of Health Research Clinical Research Network Southwest Peninsula. Andrew is involved in various initiatives to raise awareness of the impact of musculoskeletal conditions and priority for education, prevention, treatment and research at a national, European and global level. The Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Alliance (ARMA) is the umbrella body for the arthritis and musculoskeletal community in the UK, and its mission is to transform the quality of life of people with musculoskeletal conditions. It has 36 member organisations ranging from specialised support groups for rare diseases to major research charities and national professional bodies.

2 Professor Peter Kay, National Clinical Director for Musculoskeletal services, NHS England As well as the National Clinical Director for MSK services for NHS England, Peter is an Orthopaedic Surgeon at Wrightington Hospital Lancashire, Honorary Clinical Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Manchester University and Honorary Professor in Orthopaedics at the University of Central Lancashire. He has been President of the British Orthopaedic Association (2011), British Hip Society (2008) and British Orthopaedics Trainees Association (1992) and currently serves on the Council of The Royal College of Surgeons of England and Council of the Medical Defence Union. Clinically, he specialises in hip and knee replacement surgery, revision joint replacement surgery for loosening and infection, and knee arthroscopy. Managerially, he has been Director of Research, Clinical Director and Divisional Chairman for MSK, and Associate Medical Director in his own Trust (Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS FT). Peter has served on a number of Department of Health Committees nationally and was co-author of the first Musculoskeletal Framework Document from the DH (2008). Jane Green, Ehlers-Danlos Co-ordinator Sussex/Surrey Jane is an accomplished autism education professional, trainer, speaker with over 20 years of experience working in education, training, consultancy, health and social care in public and not for profit sectors. She was an advisory teacher for West Sussex County Council and worked in Early Years, Primary, Secondary and FE, the senior education consultant and lead trainer/speaker/consultant for the National Autistic Society, involved in DfE nationally supported training initiatives, the Autism Education Trust and lastly as Assistant Headteacher and lead trainer for Ambitious about Autism successfully leading training, projects and publications nationally. In 2015 she had to take medical retirement after years of injuries and pain due to her then chronic undiagnosed conditions. Now, she supports others with Ehlers-Danlos syndromes in Sussex/Surrey. Currently she advises SCIE, TLAP, NICE on autism child/adult transition, social care pathways, allergies and chronic pain, EDS and service user issues. She is a co-production member for SCIE s steering board for diversity, equality and human rights and a Trustee for Carer s Support West Sussex. Jane grew up in a family directly and indirectly diagnosed with autism and only gained her education/degrees while bringing up her two children on her own, one of whom is disabled. MA Ed. (Leadership and Management), Adv. Dip.Ed. (Child Development), PGCE Secondary, BSc. (HONS) Psych. Jane was awarded the Adult Learner Award in celebration of her remarkable achievement in learning and recognition of her inspiration to her tutors and colleagues and the Association of Open University Graduates Regional Award for 'outstanding achievement and dedication in her work.

3 Dr Daniel Murphy, Rheumatologist & GP, Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Trust & Honiton Surgery RCGP Clinical Champion- Inflammatory Arthritis Dr Danny Murphy is a GP principal in Devon with a special interest in rheumatology, he also works as a part-time staff-grade rheumatologist at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital. In addition to various research projects in rheumatology, Danny has also advised on the development of the recent BSR guideline on Biologics for the Treatment of Axial Spondyloarthritis. Danny is also the first Clinical Champion for Inflammatory Arthritis at the Royal College of General Practitioners, a role in which he hopes to empower primary care practitioners to deliver the best possible care to patients with Inflammatory Arthritis, by focusing on elearning, curriculum updates and engagement with commissioners. Steve Sparks, Delivery Partner, NHS England RightCare Steve joined NHS RightCare in January 2016, and is currently working with CCGs in East Surrey and Sussex and Berkshire, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire. Before joining NHS RightCare, Steve led the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence s field team of 8 implementation consultants for 9 1/2 years. This involved helping hospitals, commissioners and local authorities make the most of the evidence based products produced by NICE. Steve has always been motivated by helping patients and service users access the most effective treatments and services, but in a way that secures the long term sustainability of the health and care system. Working with NHS RightCare provides Steve a great opportunity to pursue this with some really good new resources and approaches. Prior to joining NICE, Steve worked as a commissioner of specialised and general acute services, was Deputy Secretary of the Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry and held a number of senior positions in acute hospitals in London and on the South Coast. Steve also has an interest in health services organisational research and sits on the National Institute for Health Research s Health Services and Delivery Panel.

4 Dr Benjamin Ellis, Consultant Rheumatologist/Senior Clinical Policy Advisor, Arthritis Research UK Benjamin divides his time working as a Consultant Rheumatologist at the Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, and as a Senior Clinical Policy Advisor for ARUK. In 2008, he undertook a two-year secondment to work both as a Clinical Advisor to the England Chief Medical Officer and Programme Manager at the World Health Organisation (WHO) Patient Safety, and subsequently completed his Masters in Public Health at John s Hopkins. Benjamin s interests include promoting a public health approach to musculoskeletal health, improving the extent and quality of musculoskeletal health data and developing systems to support self-management for people with long-term conditions. Mike Hutton, GIRFT Clinical Lead Spinal Services, The Royal Devon & Exeter NHS Foundation Trust Mike Hutton was appointed as a Consultant Spine Surgeon at The Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital in 2007 and was appointed as clinical lead in spine surgery in His specialist training was on the East Anglian Orthopaedic rotation. He undertook a combined neurosurgical/orthopaedic spinal fellowship at Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge, The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital Stanmore, Ipswich Hospital and The Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital. Following this he went on a travelling fellowship at Vancouver General Hospital and Harbour View Hospital, Seattle. Mike has a wide practice in spine surgery undertaking complex spine procedures in all areas of the spine with varied pathological conditions including paediatric and adult spine deformity. He is currently an elected member of the executive of The British Association of Spine Surgeons as the Audit and British Spine Registry Lead and is the Spinal Lead for the Department of Health Clinically Led Quality and Efficiency Programme and the Getting it Right First Time (GIRFT) Project. Paul Cilia La Corte, Senior Policy & Implementation Manager, NHS England After completing the NHS Graduate Management Training Scheme, Paul worked for 10 years in acute Trusts managing a range of services, including Trauma & Orthopaedics. These operational roles focussed on the delivery of operational priorities including acute patient flows, capacity & demand planning and delivery of performance targets (including Referral to Treatment). They also provided the opportunity to act as a patient advocate and work with clinical teams to positively change ways of working. More recently Paul has moved to NHS England, working first in the Patient Choice Unit and then the Elective Care Transformation Programme. In the latter role Paul has been working on the development and implementation of evidence based High Impact Interventions, including MSK Triage.

5 Peter Carpenter, Programme Director, Kent Surrey Sussex Academic Health Science Network Peter was appointed to the role of Programme Director with KSS AHSN in July He is currently responsible for delivery oversight of the portfolio of programmes for the AHSN, including the quality improvement and patient safety collaborative portfolios, as well as the programme activity to spread and adopt innovation into practice. Peter is also the senior engagement lead with Surrey Heartlands STP and leading the work on the Academy. The clinical networks which drive the improvement work across KSS are a key focal point to support the spread and adoption of innovation and best practice. Working closely with the Medical Director and leading the improvement team, delivery is built upon vibrant clinical networks who are keen to improve outcomes for patients and implementing innovation. Peter ensures robust governance around the improvement programme and member support and buy-in to the improvement business plans for the AHSN. Peter is committed to the principles of change and improvement though partnership and collaborative working. He is passionate about quality improvement and the spread of innovation in the health and social care. Peter has lectured at Surrey University and is an experienced trainer and quality improvement expert. Peter previously led the Service Improvement Team at St Georges Hospital. He started his career in mental health services and has a broad range of experience in commissioning and provider organisations. Previous roles have included service management and re-design, procurement, contracting and business development across a number of service areas including community and social care provision, urgent care, sexual health, prison services as well as child and adolescence mental health. Professor Rahul Kanegaonkar MBBS BSc (Hons) MRCS DLO FRCS (ORL-HNS) Consultant ENT Surgeon, Medway NHS Foundation Trust and President of The British Balance Network Professor Rahul Kanegaonkar holds two Professorships both at Canterbury Christ Church University, one in Otorhinolaryngology (Ear, Nose and Throat Surgery) where he is the Pathway Lead for the MCh in Surgery (Otorhinolaryngology) course, the other in Medical Innovation. He founded the Institute of Medical Sciences Innovation Hub which aims to drive medical innovation within the South East and has helped clinicians and local industry develop their products. Rahul studied at the Harvey Grammar School in Folkestone before reading Medicine at University College London. He undertook a number of surgical training posts in the South East before accepting his Consultant post at Medway NHS Foundation Trust and Dartford and Gravesham NHS Trust where he currently practices. Rahul has written three books, is the Otology Editor for the "Otorhinolaryngologist" and reviewer for an additional three journals, examines for the European Board of Otorhinolaryngology, is the ENT Specialty Lead for the Clinical Research Network and regularly publishes his research both within the United Kingdom and Abroad. Rahul will be presenting his work on the development of technologies in the field of ENT and physiotherapy. He will demonstrate the innovative physiotherapy app he co-created for use by patients who have undergone limb surgery. The app is used by patients in their home. Patients exercises and recovery can be monitored securely by their physiotherapist remotely. Technologies in medicine are fast developing. They not only require the skills and knowledge of clinicians but also those in industry where partnerships are key.

6 Sylvia Wojciechowski, Lead Advanced Practice Physiotherapist, Frimley Health Foundation Trust Sylvia originally started her career as a professional ballet dancer. However following an injury she retrained as a Physiotherapist at Birmingham University, qualifying in She now works at Frimley Health Foundation Trust, as the Musculoskeletal (MSK) Lead for Advanced Practice Physiotherapists (APP). With 18 years experience as an APP, she maintains a clinical role, her particular interest lying in the management of Foot and Ankle conditions. In addition she is responsible for a team of 21 APP s working in Secondary Care, Tier 2 Triage clinics and as the first point of contact in Primary Care, with latest service providing assessment for HMP. More recently she has been involved in MSK service redesign for the local area, working with commissioners and the local STP to develop best practice pathways using national and local information. Sylvia is also on the committee for the Association of Foot and Ankle Physiotherapists (AFAP) which gained charitable status in February AFAP aims are to help support and bring together physiotherapists to encourage improvements in all aspects of care for patients with Foot and Ankle problems. She has lectured on many Foot and Ankle topics, particularly on how to triage effectively, both locally and nationally. Professor Mike Hurley, St George s University of London & Kingston University and Clinical Director, Musculoskeletal Programme Professor Mike Hurley qualified as a physiotherapist at Kings College Hospital in After completing his PhD at University College London he was Lecture, Reader and Professor at Kings College London between In 2010 he became Research Lead in the School of Rehabilitation Sciences at St George s University of London. During his academic career Mike has contributed to many national working groups, clinical guideline committee and conferences, was a Clinical Advisor to Arthritis Research UK ( ), Chair of Chartered Society of Physiotherapy s Research and Clinical Effectiveness ( ), and has authored over 75 scientific papers. Mike s areas of interest are devising and evaluating rehabilitation programmes for people with rheumatologically conditions, falls and dementia, in which he has conducted several large trials in primary and secondary care. He works closely with healthcare users, clinicians and commissioners to ensure the interventions developed are clinically practicable, to facilitate wide clinical implementation. In particular, he devised and evaluated the ESCAPEpain - an award winning rehabilitation programme to help people with knee and/or hip. In July 2013 Mike was appointed Clinical Director for the newly formed Musculoskeletal Programme of the Health Innovation Network South London (the Academic Health Science Network for South London) to promote implementation of best practice for people with musculoskeletal conditions. The spread and adoption of ESCAPE-pain is a major focus for their work. The programme is now delivered in about 40 clinical departments across the UK, and the aim is to increase this number substantially. They are also beginning to deliver the programme through leisure and community centres to increase accessibility so that many more people can benefit.
