PRESIDENT S ANNUAL REPORT 2016 I welcome each of you to the 2016 Tennessee Organization of Nurse Executives (TONE) Annual Meeting, an affiliate of the Tennessee Hospital Association (THA) as well as an affiliate of the American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE). My sincere hope is that everyone takes this time to become renewed, to learn something new that you can apply in your role as a nurse leader, and to make new acquaintances. Whether this is your first annual meeting or you are new to TONE, this welcome becomes a life-long invitation to be an active member as an advocate for nurse leaders directing the care of our patients or teaching the next generation how to be successful nurses in our ever changing and demanding world. Over the past ten years, the average age of working RN s has increased by nearly two years to As more than 500,000 of the experienced nursing workforce looks to retire by 2022, projections indicate we will need 1.1 million more registered nurses by 2022 for expansion and replacement of retirees. Also the number of people over the age of 65, with their medical and health needs is increasing. Current nursing employment opportunities are mixed with shortages in some areas and surpluses in others. There continues to be a critical need for nurses at the bedside and that more nurses must be mentored to take on leadership opportunities requiring a unique set of skills for the existing multigenerational workforce. Dr. Elaine Seat, our annual meeting speaker will share information about Generational Differences in the Healthcare Workplace. We are looking forward to learning more about how to effectively work with the different generations we work with day to day. In the words of Florence Nightingale, The greatest heroes are those who do their duty in the daily grind of domestic affairs whilst the world whirls as a maddening dreidel. I am honored to work with an exceptional Board of Directors who meet on a monthly basis to conduct the valuable work of our organization. These individuals bring a wealth and variety of experience and knowledge to the table with each decision made. Six of these board members chair councils throughout our state and engage in leadership development and best practice opportunities for regional members. I applaud these efforts to provide valuable and timely topics of interest to our current membership of 234. Council chairs are Bernadette Deprez, Chattanooga; Janell Cecil, Knoxville; Nikki Stephens, Middle Tennessee; Sherry Graves, West Tennessee; Joshua Roberts, Memphis; and Sharron Fleenor, Northeast. Karli Caruso serves as our Nurse Manager Representative, Carol Wilson as our Education Chair and 17

Janice McKinley, Government Relations. Other officers are Carey Albright, President Elect and Treasurer, John Jorgensen, Secretary and Laurie Acred- Natelson, Past President. We make concerted efforts to stay focused on accomplishing the goals and objectives associated with our strategic plan by enhancing communication and collaboration between partners and other stakeholders, promoting leadership excellence through evidenced-based practice and influencing legislative and public policy related to nursing and patient care issues. Sharon Adkins is currently serving as our liaison with the Tennessee Action Coalition (TAC) targeting leadership efforts toward the advancement of the key messages in the Institute of Medicine report. Our THA liaison, Chris Clarke and our Tennessee Nurses Association (TNA) colleague, Sharon Adkins keep the board informed on current issues facing the nursing profession while working collaboratively to impact quality patient care. We are grateful to have each of these exceptional nurse leaders contribute through service as we depend heavily on each of them to help us achieve meaningful work as a state-wide professional organization. The Jearline DeWeese Student Scholarships, a tradition since mid-2000 continues this year, with having contributed over $41,000 to support nursing education. This year a total of 41 applicants sought funding and telephone interviews were conducted with the finalist candidates. The five recipients of these scholarships will be acknowledged during our annual meeting. We are also proud to recognize a nurse leader with the Excellence in Nursing Leadership Award. This individual has set themselves apart through outstanding commitments and contributions to the profession of nursing and TONE American Association of Nurses focus is Culture of Safety. ANA asks why this topic and why now? Part of that answer is that in the 15 years since the Institute of Medicine (IOM) reports were released nurses have been at the forefront of making improvements in quality and safety. However, our patients still experience more adverse events each year than even the IOM suggested. That is why we are especially proud of our strong affiliations with THA, the Tennessee Center for Patient Safety (TCPS), TNA and the Tennessee Association for Healthcare Quality (TAHQ) that provide amazing support so that we have been an integral part of the now Tenth Annual Leadership Summit. This summit showcases proven strategies and best practices in a quality and safety forum. This year we received 60 abstracts and we look forward to hearing from 12 oral presenters from diverse regions throughout our state including a substantial number of poster presentations. A special thank you goes to Chris Clarke and her able team at THA for making the Leadership Summit an on-going reality and to Carol Wilson who serves as our local resource as Education Chair and coordinates our TONE Annual meeting. 18

We all want our work to be relevant and valued and working with the TONE leaders is very motivating and rewarding. We want to be available to you for this purpose as we provide a medium for the exchange of ideas and dissemination of ideas, provide a voice to address current issues and trends, promote educational programs and learning activities and act as a catalyst for promoting standards of care and nursing practice. The value sharing stories of success and challenge proves continues to be very powerful. It is even more important today that as nurse leaders we mentor others toward a lifelong career of learning and doing. Only through doing can we learn better approaches to achieve an improved result. In becoming reflective in our work environment, we can create meaning from past and current experiences that will guide our decisions in the future. Thank you for participating in the TONE Annual meeting here today. I am privileged and grateful for the opportunity to serve as your President. Acknowledging and recognizing the power of the people in our institutions and organizations is the most important work that we do. The nurse leaders that I have become acquainted with through this organization are wonderful role models and mentors and it all began by simply making the connection. Each of you makes a difference for someone every day. Respectfully submitted, Sharon Monday, MSN BSN, RN, NEA-BC TONE President smonday@covhlth.com 19

Tennessee Action Coalition Report 33

The Tennessee Action Coalition is the driving force transforming health care through nursing in our state. Understanding that Tennessee has specific health care challenges & needs, we are working with diverse stakeholders to create & model innovative solutions with nurses leading the way. Tennessee Action Coalition Overview Provided for Tennessee Organization of Nurse Executives October 6, 2016 Future Direction The TAC has been funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) since 2013 to advance the four major recommendations on the Institute of Medicine s (IOM s) Future of Nursing report related to nursing education, leadership, and practice. Our funding has permitted the TAC to primarily focus on nursing leadership. We have made great strides during this time period. We have many of you to thank for your support and engagement with the TAC. The Tennessee Organization of Nurse Executives (TONE) is one of four organizations with a designated seat on the board of directors. This seat is held by Beverly Jordan. The RWJF is committed to Action Coalitions across the country but is now making a major organizational shift in all programming to supporting their vision for a Culture of Health. Future funding opportunities will be tied to building a Culture of Health. The TAC was one of two Action Coalitions nationwide selected to host a Culture of Health event to hasten the transition to working boldly with cross-sectoral partners to improve equity across diverse populations and the health and well-being of everyone in America. Tennessee participants came away from the two-day event energized by possibilities and committed to looking opportunities for working in new ways and for new purposes. Nurses are critical to building a Culture of Health. The RWJF is not abandoning the IOM Future of Nursing recommendations. Instead they see implementation of the IOM recommendations as essential and foundational to advancing the Culture of Health which embodies the vison of enabling all in our diverse society to lead healthy lives, now and for generation to some with nurses leading the way. The board of directors of the TAC have been deliberating on the future of the organization, strategic priorities, and sustainability. A few early themes have emerged: The TAC can uniquely serve an important role as a convener of diverse stakeholders. Harnessing the energy of diverse stakeholders, creating synergy, and focusing efforts is an imperative given the audacious goal of improving equity and health in the state and the reality of limited resources and competing demands. 34

New ideas, purpose, leadership, and collaborations emerge during times of transition; we must embrace change and be open to possibilities. Times of transition are risky and not all organizations persist, or need to persist. There is a growing consensus to explore the idea of the TAC being a convener of stakeholders interested in using workforce data to develop actionable recommendations that will ultimately facilitate improving health and health care in Tennessee. A small task force has been meeting to discuss this idea. The discussion was expanded during the TAC September board meeting. Consequently the TAC will be convening a meeting of stakeholders November 14, 2016 in Nashville to discuss interest in working together on Tennessee nursing workforce data, priorities, facilitators and barriers, and sustainability. A key priority for the TAC leadership and stakeholder engagement. Victoria Niederhauser has served as the chair for the TAC board since the organization of the board. Vickie has announced her resignation. An internal search is underway for Vickie s successor. Board member attrition is a natural occurrence in the life of a board. The TAC is not immune to this. We have some board vacancies, but are waiting to determine how to proceed based on the outcome of the November workforce meeting and other factors. We are convinced that a broader involvement across the state in the work of the TAC is essential for ongoing success. The TAC board is engaged in contingency planning. Our RWJF funding ends January 31, We expect that we will have the funds necessary to operate the coalition through most, if not all, of the remainder of Current Initiatives During this time of introspection and transition, the TAC is active as an organization. In addition to the Culture of Health event, below is a brief summary of current TAC initiatives. Emerging Leaders Regional Seminars: The TAC has hosted two emerging leader seminars in Memphis and Nashville this year. A meeting is being planned in Chattanooga. To-date there have been 78 participants. The aim of the seminars is to enhance leadership competencies and to facilitate select nurse leaders in embracing the future and facilitating a Culture of Health. Any organizations or institutions interested in partnering to offer a seminar should contact Carole R. Myers (cmyers9@utk.edu). Cultural Competence Webinars: The TAC is offering a six-session webinar series with national speakers incorporating social justice, critical reflection, cultural competence in health care organizations, patient advocacy, the multicultural workforce 35

& cross-cultural leadership as strategies to build a Culture of Health. Webinars can be viewed two ways: 1) via live bi-monthly webinars in 2016 and early 2017 or 2) on-demand viewing of recorded webinars. Group viewing encouraged. CEUs available at no charge to Tennessee nurses. Nurses on Boards: The TAC is gathering baseline data on board service; developing a complement of strategies to increase numbers, effectiveness & influence of those serving on boards. All Tennessee nurses are asked to complete the survey at Respectfully submitted, Carole R, Myers, PhD, RN-Nursing Lead 36

Northeast Council TONE 2016 Annual Report The Northeast Council is once again trying to revitalize. We struggled this past year with attendance and membership. Our meetings are conducted in three different locations, connecting via video conferencing, in the Tri- Cities area on the forth Friday of every other month. Communication regarding the meetings and information is distributed to the TONE members and to nurse leaders who are eligible for membership. At the meetings, I review the purpose and the importance of membership providing examples, TONE State Board and legislative updates, TONE Strategic Plan, etc. I sent two communications to each nurse leader that was potentially eligible for membership. The communication included introducing our council, the purpose of TONE, a copy of the application and the online link to the application. I sent communication to the CNO s encouraging their participation and for their nurse leaders. One CNO, who recently joined, agreed to pay for the nurse managers to join TONE. With these efforts we are slowly beginning to increase membership. MEMBERSHIP REPORT: As of 10/01/16 = 26 Our last meeting was 09/30/16 with 11 in attendance. One of the actions for our membership drive, and to encourage participation in TONE, we hosting a Nursing Leadership Conference to be held on 11/11/16. We will be providing free CEU s through Mountain States Health Alliance s Organizational Development Department. Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center is allowing us to use their auditorium at no cost. We are very appreciative to both of these healthcare systems for their support. I also want to thank Sheri McRae for her assistance with this. I m very excited and appreciative of the speaker s that have agreed to speak. A call for poster presentations was distributed to encourage the area nurse leaders to share evidence-based best practices that improved quality and safety, promotes excellence in clinical practice, nurse retention, Affiliate of the Tennessee Hospital Association 46
