Let me tell you a story Advance Practice Nurses in Professional Development Nurses are striving to maintain competence in the ever evolving complex healthcare environment 5
Advance Practice Nurses in Professional Development Nursing Professional Development specialists play a vital role in competence and growth of nurses. (Harper & Maloney, 2016) Advance Practice Nurses in Professional Development Historically practiced with many titles Staff educator Clinical educator Professional practice Advance Practice Nurses in Professional Development Focused mainly on Orientation of new hired nurses Inservicing of new products/equipment CEU activities Student services Advance Practice Nurses in Professional Development Then along came Magnet and The Pathway to Excellence Both designations recognize excellence in nursing and require years of preparation and education of direct care nurses 6
Advance Practice Nurses in Professional Development The role of the staff educator expanded to include Shared governance facilitator New project champion Nursing outcomes Those sub roles! The staff educator grew Advance Practice Nurses in Professional Development Continuing education requirements for licensure Fairly new for some Nurses may need guidance on resources Most states require continued competency regulations Contact hours Virginia 15 every 2 years Washington 45 every 2 years Know what your state requires! Learning takes time and effort! Advance Practice Nurses in Professional Development Where to get the Continuing Education Workshops, conferences, seminars Teaching contact hours College courses in nursing related degree tracks Resources for Orthopaedics Nurses Orthopaedic Nursing Review Course 7
Advance Practice Nurses Must be Life Long Learners The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Healthcare (IOM, 2010) recommends and envisions nurses practicing to the full extent of their scope of practice Nurses in all practice setting experience learning needs. Lifelong Learners Accelerate Their Professional Development Life Long learning nurses will be able to bloom in the constantly changing environment Experience vs Lifelong Learning Imagine you meet a nurse with 10 years of nursing experience Does this nurse have 1 year of experience repeated 10 times? Actually has 10 years of experience Actually Having 10 Years Experience What does that look like? Willing to step out of comfort zone for opportunity to learn View self as asset to be developed Look at nursing as a career or calling and not job 8
Polling Question True or False The most experienced nurse on the unit, is the best nurse as a preceptor. Benefits of Life Long Learning Enables the nurse to exhibit excellent clinical judgement Uses clinical intuition Excellent patient safety record Makes clinical decisions in a timely way Promoting Lifelong Learning Evidence based practice changes almost daily Keeping up with changes enables direct care nurses to provide optimal care Promoting Life Long Learning Byproduct of learning is professional growth and development 9
Lifelong Learning is not a once and done event. It is a journey! Polling Question Barriers to Life Long Learning What are some barriers to life long learning? A. Lack of opportunity B. Lack of time C. Lack of support D. Apathy E. Don t know how to get started Over Coming Barriers to Life Long Learning Find a mentor Ask lots of questions Start with what is attainable Promoting Lifelong Learning Choose a Path Certification Not only is certification beneficial for patients, but it can also have personal, professional, and economic benefits for nurses. Experience personal growth Sense of accomplishment recognition by successfully completing the certification process. 10
Certification as a Path Certification is not a new concept Nurses have been offered certification in specialty areas since the mid 1970s Certification as a Path Licensure is required while certification is voluntary Takes a high degree of self motivation to pursue a certification, but the benefits are many. Certification as a Path Haskins, Hnatiuk, and Yoder (2011) noted this enhances nurses feelings of empowerment within the clinical practice setting. Employers can support employees through registration fee reimbursement, review courses and incentives A Multitude of National Certifications Begin with self reflection and an assessment of the career path you would like to follow. Certification in a nursing specialty demonstrates a commitment to advancing one s knowledge and skillset. 11
A Multitude of National Certifications Organizations offer certifications as a way to raise standards. American Nurses Credentialing Center certifies specialties such as faith community nursing, pediatric nursing, and psychiatric mental health nursing, as well as acute care nurse practitioner (NP), pediatric primary care NP, and family NP. APRN certification examinations are available for each of the specialties, including more than 10 NP examinations and at least five clinical nurse specialist examinations. Nursing Specialty Certifications American Nurses Credentialing Center ONCB s ONC and ONP C certification programs are accredited by Accreditation Board for Specialty Nursing Certification (ABSNC). ABSNC is the only organization accrediting ONLY specialty nursing certification programs. ONCB Affiliations National Association of Orthopaedic Nurses (NAON) NAON promotes education, research, and evidence based orthopaedic nursing practice. American Board of Nursing Specialties (ABNS) As an advocate for consumer protection, ABNS supports specialty nursing certification. Institute for Credentialing Excellence (ICE) ICE promotes best practices for the credentialing community. 12
Nurse Practitioner Certifications American Nurses Credentialing Center Certifications Requiring Advance Degree Clinical Nurse Specialist Certifications American Nurses Credentialing Center Lifelong Learning Choose a Path Return to School for Degree Advancement Master of Science in Nursing Doctor of Nursing Practice Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing 13
Lifelong Learning Choose a Path Become involved in a professional nursing organization Attend national and local conferences Present research or best practice innovation as podium or poster presenter Lifelong Learning Choose a Path Participate in unit based and hospital based shared governance programs and committees Become a preceptor or mentor Lifelong Learning Choose a Path Advance into leadership roles Charge nurse Clinical educator Lifelong Learning Choose a Path Clinical ladder advancement programs Transition to a new role or position 14
Cultivate a Sense of Curiosity Ask questions Read Even if it is not nursing related, it may stimulate ideas for improvement Look for ideas Broaden your perspectives Exchange ideas between disciplines Anticipate and Embrace Change Be proactive Do not wait to be forced into something new Become cross trained in new skills or seek additional education or credentialing Brainstorm with colleagues on emerging trends Something you have read! Look for Learning Around You Accept free training and become multi skilled Empower yourself with effective communication Pay attention to excellent leaders How do they interact with others? How do they stay on top of things? Lifelong learning requires that nurses use their experience in combination with best practices and research to ensure that the most current nursing processes are being implemented. (Eason, 2010) 15
Importance in Patient Outcomes Importance in Patient Outcomes There is a distinct relationship between nursing, lifelong learning, critical thinking, and clinical reasoning (Cruz,Pimenta, & Lunney, 2009). Attention to lifelong learning is based on dedication to the acquisition of skills, new knowledge, and a desire to be ever evolving and well versed in the nursing field (Armstrong, Johnston,Bridges, & Gessner, 2003). Advance Practice Nurses in a Clinical Setting Advanced Practice Nurses working at the bedside or in administrative roles Requires leadership skills Rapidly synthesize information Apply new, setting specific knowledge Improve patient outcomes! (Rodriguez, 2016) Future of Advanced Practice Nurses American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) endorsed the Doctorate of Nursing Practice (DNP) as terminal degree for nursing practice (AACN, 2004) and entry level for Advanced Practice Nurses by 2015 Change is academically driven No state boards require at this time 16
Future of Advanced Practice Nurses Advanced Practice Nurses of the future will have entry level of education DNP 1000 hours of clinical education Will work collaboratively with nurse researchers Translate evidence to practice Implement innovations Evaluate outcomes Future of Advanced Practice Nurses Prevalence of DNP programs Nurses graduating with DNP increasing rapidly since AACN s endorsement Advanced Practice Nurses use expertise to evaluate evidence to change nursing practice Resources for Nurses New to Orthopaedics Webinars (live and recorded) Orthopaedic Nursing Journal 17
