1 You Made a Difference award winners - September 04 October 2017 Katie Kent was called by a staff nurse from the neuro critical care unit (NCCU), as it was late on Friday evening and the team could not get hold of the child psychologist who they would normally seek for advice in the circumstances. Katie offered to come down to the Unit to assist and the empathy she showed towards the child so impressed her colleagues on NCCU that they nominated her for a You Made a Difference award which impressed the judges. Image not found You file:///srv/bindings/5bb8e2da0f5145a7b3aed275994c0135/code/sites/default/files/katie%20kent.jpg Made a Difference winner Kent surrounded by colleagues The nomination said: I am a Staff Nurse from NCCU and on the day I met Katie, we were withdrawing care from one of our patients. The patient had been in a terrible accident, and had a young daughter who wanted to say goodbye to her mother. As it was a Friday evening, we could not get in contact with a Child Psychologist, so we contacted C3 for advice. Katie offered to come down to the Unit and assist. Having worked with children for some time, she felt comfortable speaking to the child and kindly offered to guide the young girl through the process of seeing her critically unwell mother and saying goodbye. Her kind-hearted attitude, empathy and good nature towards this child made this terrible experience far more bearable for both the patient s family and NCCU staff. She is a credit to the organisation and we cannot thank her enough for her kindness in this difficult situation. Having trained at University of Hertfordshire, Katie secured her first staff nurse post on Ward D2 in In 2009, she decided to expand her knowledge and experience by moving to Ward C3 as a Band 5 nurse. Page 1
2 Katie has been keen to develop her role, undertaking the HDU and mentorship courses and she is a link trainer for Moving and Handling Last summer Katie successfully gained a 12 month secondment to a Band 6 training post. During this secondment she has had the opportunity to lead a small team of staff, which also enabled her to develop her leadership skills on the ward. Carl an utmost deserving winner Carl Whiffen was a very deserving winner of a You Made a Difference award for September for his passion and commitment to improving patient care. Carl has worked for the Trust since 2007 but in that time he has had to battle a brain tumour, undergoing several operations which resulted in him having to learn to walk, balance and coordinate again. When he was fit enough he returned to work as a part-time technician in sterile services and, in October 2014, he returned to his love of working on the wards as a healthcare assistant on G3. Carl still faces challenges as he has a number of disabilities that impact on his day-to-day work and home life, but always shows enthusiasm and is a very valuable member of the team. A dementia champion, having undertaken additional training from the Alzheimer s Society, he is an excellent role model and has worked hard to make improvements on the ward, such as bay nursing and an on-going project of upgrading the bathroom facilities. Carl received the award from two stellar nominations, one of which came from a family member of a patient he cared for. I would like to acknowledge the fantastic care received when my Grandfather was on G3 and in particular a special mention to Carl, who looked after him with the utmost care, compassion and understanding, the nomination said. He always went the extra mile to make my Grandfather more comfortable it was the little things, such as bringing him a mug instead of plastic cup, which made him feel more at home. Carl also offered to travel with my Grandfather to the nursing home at the end of one Page 2
3 of his shifts so that he could make the journey with someone he recognised. I am astounded at the care and compassion he has shown my Grandfather and would like that to be recognised.
